My picks in order of most disappointing

1) Half life 2, such a weak story and boring characters ruined the game for me, . Bioshock kills it stone dead.

2) PDZ, was very hyped for this, PD was a amazing game but the sequel was a major let down in every area.

3) Halo 2, boring story, weak single player, commuinty on Xbox live was nothing but moany little kids and trash talkers. Worst online game ever.

4) Metroid Prime Echoes, the whole dark and light thing made for one boring game, Retro should have been taken off the series after this mess.

post your most disappointing sequels to great games, and see if they can match these stinkers.

Hmm, what would I say?

Well if I had to say something it would be Phoenix Wright 2. The cases were not so well put together so I had to guess some ridiculous things. And there are a lot of plot holes and unanswered questions.

I agree with the TCs post except for HL2 and here are a few of my inductions:

Great game, but not up to the standards of the first game.

Great in the visuals department and great gameplay, but lack luster compared to original.

PD0. It's not entirely bad in it's own right, but compared to the original it's a steaming load of failure.

Quake 4 SP successor to Quake 2 and theoretivcaly MP sequal to Quake 3, but it failed it both and really ruined what could of been the greatest MP deathmatch game ever.

Halo 2 > All other sub par games

Microsoft really tried to kill the Halo franchise in part 2. Instead of focusing on building more of the story they threw in a multiplayer and made it one of the weakest titles released that year.

They knew there'd be a Halo 3 so they just concentrated on getting to three by making 2 nothing but fluff. There is no value at all in Halo2.

Banjo Tooie probably had loads more on gameplay, but it somehow didn't have the magic of the original. It could just be a case of nostalgia on my part though.

On a side note, I've heard a lot of "Perfect Dark Zero was a letdown in every aspect compared to the original". Anyone care to elaborate? If it's just nostalgia here too, that's fine, but having played through both, Zero is a major improvement.

FFX-2

Sequel to what many people consider to be one of the best Final Fantasies out there. This game sucked hardcore...shame on gamespot for giving this game AA.

Doom3

Sure it looks great but where is the gameplay. Gun without flash light = ULTIMATE FAILURE

LOL I'm glad I'm not the only one that hates Mario Sunshine, after Mario64 i was expecting a slick sequel only to be greeted with crap in the face. As much as I tried to like the game, the more I hated it. To much focus on the water pack and to little focus on Mario I think. Never played Mario Kart DD, but everytime I ask someone if its better than Mario Kart 64 they say no >.>. So I decided to never play it lol.

Anyhow add Ninja Gaiden 3 to the list, such a disappointment after playing Ninja Gaiden 2 :(

Oh good point, someone reminded me of FFX-2.

It was too short, too easy and felt like a cheap game despite the nice graphics.

1. Devil May Cry 2 - The original DMC was a great action game with a captivating story and gameplay. The sequel was horrid and an insult to DMC fans.

2. FF X-2 - FF X was an incredibly well done rpg with a very epic story and charismatic, likeable characters. FF X-2 was the first true sequel of a FF game and had scores of fans excited to see the game through and tie up some loose ends. Instead we got this hokey girl power half assed rpg with no particular direction.

3. Halo 2 - Not a bad game by any means. The story was actually better than what most people state, but it could have been so more epic. Billed as an all out defense of earth against a covenant invasion, instead the initial skirmish on earth was nothing more than a short side story and left many fans disappointed.

4.Grandia 2 - Grandia was an incredibly good game for the DC. Grandia 2 was not. Enough said.

5.Soul Caliber 2 - Follow up to one of the best 3d fighting games. Mediocre at best.

Just a few of the top of my head.

Half Life 2

The original is one of my all-time favourites so I anticipated the sequel a great deal. It makes great use of technology for some innovative moments, but the core gameplay is so dull I got more joy from Killzone. I'm deadly serious.

Agreed with all except Prime 2. Prime 2 was wholly better than the first. Everything the game contained was better. The story (two planet Aethers (Aether is unique compared to Earthlike Tallon IV) created thanks to the corruption of Phazon), the setting (Tallon IV felt too much like Zebes, Samus travels to tons of different alien worlds, I'd at least hoped the first one she visits in the first 3D iteration is not a blatant Zebes copy) the characters (Luminoth actually existing at the time and having a great backstory, GF Troopers, Dark Samus, etc) the gameplay (new items, screw attack, echo visor, annihilator beam, etc) the bosses were sooooo much better and so much more challenging and interesting and of course... the Light Suit... that in itself made the game better than the first.

Prime 2 was a great improvement over Prime and Prime 3 was a great improvement over Prime 2. Both sequels were better than the games that came previous and proved that Retro are amazing developers that should not be overlooked when developing their next IP.

Anyone who can't admit that Prime 2 was better than Prime is stuck in the past. Metroid has been out for 20 years and needs evolution. Prime 2 and Prime 3 brought it that evolution. And its much better off. "Oh, but the atmosphere is so much better in Prime!" Yeah... and the atmosphere is so much better in Prime 3.

And you found it boring? I found the pacing of Prime 2 to be faster and much more "cinematic" then the first. If anything, the first one is more boring then the second. And if Retro had been taken off Prime after that "mess" we wouldn't have got the masterpiece that is Prime 3. Please, if you were a true Metroid fan, you'd be praising all three Prime games equally for their unique qualities.

1) KOTOR II- You could really tell Bioware hadn't developed this. Useless gameplay mechanics, an annoying focus on being neutral, hordes of plot holes that are NEVER resolved...it was a disaster in comparison to the first KOTOR

2) Devil May Cry 2- Hey, let's take away Dante from half of the game! Fans'll LOVE that!

3) Final Fantasy X-2- Nothing else needs to be said. Was all the proof I needed that the series had been casualized to kingdom come.

If we can consider Xenosaga the sequel to Xenogears, I pick that.

I also think Invisible War and KOTOR II deserve mentioning.

I agree that the single player in Halo 2 was a let down. It was kind of like (but no where near as bad) Pirates of the carabean 2, I kept waiting for it to get good but the credits started rolling first.

the worst sequel for me was Crono Cross, HANDS DOWN!!!!

he's right. super mario bros 2, was simply doki doki panic (some arabian nights game, i think) with mario sprites.

Although still made my nintendo, it can be considered a mario game as it was made by nintendo and miyamoto did work on it. But i guess its really opinionated.

Chrono Cross takes the cliche story of Chrono Trigger and turns it into something much more. CC is the far superior game storywise, but I'm not here to debate about that. I respect your opinion of the game.

Anyhow add Alundra 2 to the list, perhaps one of the worst sequels of all time. It has nothing to do with the first one.

Halo2 is by far the biggest one for me. I've probably played Halo:CE more than %99 of you lemmings. I know what I'm talking about. Halo2's campaign blew and the multiplayer ruined all the unique subtleties that made the first so great. Although entertaining, Halo2 just lost all the magic of the first and took a step backwards towards a causal shallow generic shooter.

DMC2 is a big one also (although 3 redeemed it, but 4 will probably suck too since its now a multiplat aimed at casuals)

Echoes wasn't that great (definitely wasn't an AAA game), but it's a damn good thing they didn't take Retro off of the Prime series, because Corruption is amazing.
