Ultima VII: The Black Gate.

That's right... a game from 1992. And this isn't just a "look at me" vote. There really hasn't been a game world as interactive since U7. Zelda's world is a complete joke compared to U7 for example. I sure as hell can't obtain the ingredients to bread, put them together and then bake them in Zelda. I can in U7.

It lacks fine detail though. Reusing 2d sprites is not something I would call detailed.

Since the topic has changed, then there is no contest here. The most open world there is, is OUT DOORS :)

It has no loading screens between regions, no frame rate issues no matter how much distance traversed or objects in field, and absolutely the best draw distance there is. Also the most realistic HDR lighting. Only draw backs are no respawning or instant transport portals between hubs :P

Outdoors is boring just like FarCry 2, except there is even weaker gunplay and more diseases:P

I will have to say Red Dead Redemption. I mean, that world has its own ecosystem and food chain. The whole structure and layout is very diverse and detailed.

I agree although the setting too has something to do with it.

Weaker? Outdoors has the most visceral gunplay there is with the most accurate force feedback system for when you're hit with bullets :lol:

Yeah I'd have to give it to WoW, a lot of sections in that game make my jaw drop, the graphics arnt all that but the scale of everything blows my mind, plas the economy in the game is great, very addictive.

Its sad no1 gives this game credit... Graphics aside the scale and attention to detail is beyond impressive. You walk into areas of the game and the atmosphere looks completely different just like that. A game where the world needs to explored is a must.

mattuk69

This is the correct answer. Literally the most impressive game of all time.

Really? i cant be immersed in the straightforward maps the first game had. It was way too small and linear for a open world game. More like not an open world game.

Yeah I think I'd at least have someone react rather than Oblivion's braindead AI. I once sneak attack killed a beggar talking to a guard. The guard just stood there for a minute, then looked down and loudly exclaimed, "SOMEONE'S BEEN MURDERED!" then just walked along with his business.

Yes, but now you will have people coming in telling us :OMG those are not open world." If there is one thing I can not stand, it is TCs who change their damn topic when people have already posted.

that's nice. but its his thread. dont like it? dont post/delete your posts. Anyway, RDR is my answer

Funny...You ****talk STALKER,yet you can stomach Oblivion where even if you kill a innocent person in a Secluded spot out in the middle of nowhere with no witnesses, the guards are able to sense this and arrest you the next time you go into a town/village?

But maybe I just dont understand the mystical world of Cyrodiil...everyone knows the Guards have a magical sixth sense to detect "criminal scum"....it's Fantasy duh!

Hence why I'll throw in Morrowind from time to time...and played Oblivion once and never played it again.

Not to mention Morrowind had a unique atmospheric alien like world on par with planescape torment opposed to Oblivion's generic by the numbers fantasy world.

Really tough choice, and depends on the definition of Open World

Mafia 1 is the most immersive game i know of, and it has an open world, but the open world is not the source of the immersion

Morrowind had a very strong sense of culture and had an abundance of really interesting locations with interesting characters

Fallout: New Vegas seems to have an infinite number of places to explore and interesting people to talk to, it might take the cake in terms of sheer detail

Stalker has a brilliant atmosphere, and simply wandering around is incredibly compelling. Call of Pripyat counts especially since the entire game is divided into three huge levels instead of the many smaller ones like previous stalker games.

don't think I could choose from the above games. They are all incredibly immersive and the worlds well realized.

I would have agreed if the world wasnt so underdeveloped... with a lore as rich as the brand has, LOTRO had a very bland world that didnt really encourage exploring every inch

For me it would have to be Oblivion. I can escape for hours in that game and every minute feels like a real place. Fallout 3 was similar, but i did feel it was fake at times like the huge artificial barriers surrounding DC that you couldnt climb over.

Mass Effect is another one, everthing about the world came together perfectly and made sense. There was a reason for everything to be there, and even an explanation for the results. Bioware does a great job with that. So does Rockstar
