I have compiled a list of 5 trend setter games that lead the way to great sales and Opened the doors for other games in the same genre. From over 15 years of me playing Games these are the games that Stood out as the games that opened doors and brang people in front of the TV to play Games rather than Watch TV or Movies on them and the list has begun

Madden , this game is way more important than Most gamers realize. Football is popular here in american and if it wasn't for Madden we would have not saw the explosion in The Snes and Sega genesis. in fact most times theres a best selling games list it says (Non sports) cause madden will easly win the best selling franchises. The N64 skipped Madden for a year and look what Happened. Madden wasn't on dreamcast and look what happend.

Final Fantasy 7 , Sure there were many Before it but this game maid RPG's mainstream and prooved if done right can make anyone buy it not just Hardcores, nowadays people add RPG elements to like ever game before FF7 RPG's where hardcores only.

Super Mario Brothers , when this game came out it just destroyed Atari and the Master System. most us still know the tunes and this game opened the Doors for games like Sonic and crash bandicoot. had there never been mario would anyone thing that just jumping platform to platform would be fun? i doubt it.

Metal Gear Solid , when this game came out it showed that Video games can be betetr than a Movie. with a script like this and the awsome presentation it felt like you were watching a good movie but it was a game truly the first game to get it right and after this game , alot of copie cats and games trying to make games that had the movie quality of MGS.

Mortal Kombat , sure there was Doom but mortal Combat brang Violence to Consoles first and if this game would have not sold well they would not have ever know there was a market so big for violent and gory games. This game was in fron of congress this game was huge when it first came out and GTA has this game to thank for opening that door.

Agree or disagree post your most important game to you.

ET for the Atari. Without it, the gaming industry might not have fallen and caused the creation of all the games you listed.

You have some good ones, but I would Replace MORTAL KOMBAT with Street Fighter II.

SFII's impact on gaming far outshines MK, even if MK was mature.  Games were mature before MK, and would have continued that way anyways, as you said, DOOM was first and proves that.

Others :

FF, MGS, Mario, and Doom(or Wolfenstein 3D).

I've been gaming since the very early 80's (pre-2600) and my two "most important" games are Phantasy Star for the SMS and Halo for the XBOX because both games had this "OMGKOOLLZORZ forever" effect that I've only gotten from those two games. I've played hundreds and maybe over a thousand games and I could reel off a list but those two are important for me personally because they are benchmarks that keep my faith in the industry as a whole. I'm waiting for the next one to come around but there was a big gap between the first two.

thats why i listed 5 that opened the market for those type of games. who would have thought that people wanted to see 10 minutes of movies in MGS without actually playing. Only kojima took the risk of that and now we see countless games making the cutscense elaborate.

Street Fighter 2- laid the foundation of fighters and has one of the biggest fanbases of any game even to do this day
Super Mario Bros- saved gaming in NA
Tetris- Think Super Mario Bros except for handhelds.

Very true and SF is close 6th you gotta admit that MK over shadowed it when it was released though.

I do not see why a game has to be "the first" to be important.

Starcraft was perfectly balanced and infinitely customizable. Allowing for endless replay value and an amazing online experience. Not to mention it is one of the greatest RTS's in the history of gaming.

Doom brought First Person Shooter's into the mainstream. Everyone knew about Doom in 1993. Not everyone played it, but they knew about it. It practically shut down schools and businesses because people could not stop playing it.

I may have been a little presumptuous putting up Tribes... but it was the first FPS to utilize vehicles...

Metroid was one of the first adventure games to allow for sequence breaking and feature a female protagonist. Even now we hardly see characters like Samus who are not overly sexualized (sadly, Samus has suffered the same fate).

Diablo is an amazing game in its own right. Everything about the game screams "great."

Definitely Pong, first hit game in history, though there were games before it

Street Fighter 2, created the fighting genre as it is today, though I could see how a case could be made for MK2 (created the ESRB)

Though there were FPSs before Doom and Wolfenstein 3d, those were the first ones that sold well and they basically created the FPS market of today

ET, it crashed the video game industry and created the video game industry as we know it

Finally Grand Theft Auto 3, though there were 3d sandbox games before it, GTA 3 made people realize that gaming isn't for kids anymore and was a major factor in PS2's 100+ million sales last gen

Honorary mention for Donkey Kong, creating the biggest series of games ever: Mario

Honorary mention for Tetris, making the Game Boy win the first round of handhelds and created Nintendo's market dominance in the handheld market ever since

Zelda is a great game but i don't think it's release was ground breaking although as much of a great game it was. IMO Golden EYE did more for FPS on consoles than OOT did for the Action Adventure genre.

those are good picks as i said but i still think the 5 i put down gave more to the Industry. i'm not saying Since start craft wasn't first it wasn't betetr my point is Blizzard would never thought of the exact same RTS type game that was like C&C if it wasn't for C&C and no one would have know people wanted to buy RTS if it wasn't for the Success of C&C thats the point of the thread to show games that opened doors for games like it or gave something to gamers that wasn't offered before. Star Craft is betetr than C&C but we can argue if it wasn't for C&C would Starcraft be an RTS. Star Craft didn't open door it just walked thru it and made RTS better. i'm talking about games that were important because they gave us something never offered before or added enough to make the games mainstream. but your opinion is a valid one no doubt.

yes but mario prooved more people will buy consoles and no one tryed to do another pong.

Every game you mentioned is game history from last week, short of games that were on supercomputers in the early 70's like Space Wars, Pong was a mass market quarter muncher that transitioned into a home console and set the stage for every other arcade to home translation. Your perspective is skewed from your youth, thats not a bad thing its just how things are. Video game history did not start with the release of the original Nintendo.

5 games

1.- PONG- I dont care how did Mario improved videogaming. Pong started videogaming history. Simple and nice, two lines and a pixel (think of it as 7 pixels in movement), started the revolution.

2.-Mario (NES)- This is a no brainer in videogaming history. It made a standard for videogames for many many years. Almost every platformer has some elements Mario has.

3.-Final Fantasy I- Although the importance of this game has been somewhat ommited, Squaresoft did something way beyond the era. Started videogames with characters, each one with personality and most important, a story sequence which affects the game.

2.-Street Fighter 2 - This little piece of junk made many (if not all )of us readers, loose our quarters in a simple game. It introduced characters with unique movements, story behind each one, and... ok.. just let me say that this great game TRULY began a genre.

5.-MARIO 64- If people see 2 mario games, may call me a sheep, but  Mario 64 introduced a platformer 3d world with unique parts as NEVER SEEN BEFORE. Mario 64 was the first true solid 3d Game.

SPECIAL MENTION:

FF7- Final fantasy 7 did what no other game could. Introduce RPG´s into mass market and make RPG players not geeks, but videogame players.

wrong. madden is **** anyone with half a brain would never play a sports game on a video gaming console. metal gear solid is more underground than above ground. where i've lived (primarily midwest and east coast) i didn't hear **** about it untill the metal gear solid 4 article in game informer. way more revolutionary games are such as super smash brothers, the original donkey kong(with mario) and the halo franchise. pong makes way more sense than mortal kombat. also the sonic franchise (before 2002) deserves an honorable mention.

have you played game back then? when MGS came out it was just 100% gameplay and now ever game has movie cutscenes with diologe even mario. MGS perfected Presnetation. the Industry saw it and said hey we should add stuff like that to our games. Madden was a milestone in gaming in America if your not a football fan you won't agree but fact is people want to buy a console for madden. MK also sold alot and after MK guess how many M rated games came? to many to count. if MK was banned at the time would there be m rated games? in fact MK is the reason your games have rating they were the first games to start adding it before that there wasn't an ESRB. Console games are sold to kids and this game wasn't for kids and because of MK every game has a rating i think that qualifys as important if they created a whole rating System because of it. Doom was gory but PC's are for adults so the ratings were mainly because consoles are sold to kids.

Video game history did not start with the release of the original Nintendo.

but before mario who sold 40 million? no one thats my point.

Pong sold more than 40 million by far. Everybody had it and there were dozens of variations on the console, some with four pads, some with light guns ect..ect... If you really want to press this Tecmo bowl was more importent than madden, Jumpman was more importent than Mario as far as the concept went. Wizard of War was the first co-op. Claiming Mk was more important than Street Fighter is just crazy.

Overall,I'd say It's Mario. I'll also just add Halo because it made the Xbox console what it is.

Agree or disagree post your most important game to you.

wrong. madden is **** anyone with half a brain would never play a sports game on a video gaming console. metal gear solid is more underground than above ground. where i've lived (primarily midwest and east coast) i didn't hear **** about it untill the metal gear solid 4 article in game informer. way more revolutionary games are such as super smash brothers, the original donkey kong(with mario) and the halo franchise. pong makes way more sense than mortal kombat. also the sonic franchise (before 2002) deserves an honorable mention.

have you played game back then? when MGS came out it was just 100% gameplay and now ever game has movie cutscenes with diologe even mario. MGS perfected Presnetation. the Industry saw it and said hey we should add stuff like that to our games. Madden was a milestone in gaming in America if your not a football fan you won't agree but fact is people want to buy a console for madden.

Madden is only a milestone in the US. Soccer games in Europe sell the same. Metal Gear Solid did not introduce cutscenes, and though it had a good narrative, there were already games with better narratives that were popular before it. Final Fantasy 7 was popular and did basically create the modern JRPG genre, but there are games that are better deserving of that spot that have been more influential in creating the modern video gaming world.

Because of MK they created the ESRB thats important. i'm not saying wich game is better. and i doubt pong sold 40 million on atari highly doubt that. maybe if you add up every pong made including the ones for xbox etc etc but back then there weren't 40 million atari owners.

I think the term important is a little open ended. If you said the games that innovated I would have said something different. As far as games that are important to me as a gamer I listed two. I would say RE introduced the concept of mixing story and action without having RPG elements before MGS. I think it came out before MGS...

list them please without . and i'm entitled to my opinion and so are you. I never said it was the first to introduce Cutscense but the one to make it feel like a movie. There are no games like pong or tetris anymore but there splinter cell and Syhpon filter still around both MGS clones. i'm not saying these are the best games but the ones that opened the doors for something each title gave us something differant and even if these arn't those most important they are important games.

Jill you the master of unlocking is nothing compared to the amzing quality of MGS. and now RE4 cutscense were way better and almost MGS like. RE spark one copy cat Silent Hill wich was like a mix of RE and MGS i agree with alot of everyone picks but i still feel the above titles gave more to make games Mainstream.

I'd say Hideo Kojima's Snatcher had a better narrative, plus many adventure games like Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream and The Secret of Monkey Island, RPGs like Fallout, the Ultima series and Baldur's Gate and even other games like Starcraft. Metal Gear Solid was a brilliant game, but there are many more deserving games out there.

Sorry but those games did nothing for the Videogame industry., Minus ultima online wich opened the door for MMORPG's and if there was never command and conquer would Starcraft know how to make an exact copie cat but in space? i said important games not your favorite sleeprs. sleeper do not = important to the sucess of videogames. it's all about innovation, presentation and plan fun. ofocurse we can disagree all day but how can you say Star craft is more innovative and how did StarCraft open the doors for RTS when the door was already opened by C&C?

You're calling those games sleepers? Those are some of the most popular games of all time. Many are on Gamespot's Greatest Games of All Time list.  Every single one of those games made major strides in the industry. Besides, I thought we were talking about narrative, which Starcraft was great at. If you want to know just what Starcraft did though, it created the biggest e-sports industry in the world (the South Korean one), it was the first RTS game to get three massively different races balanced just right, it secured Blizzard's spot as a major player in the games industry and it was the best selling RTS of all time, selling over 9 million copies.

none of those games minus ultima and starcraft deserve the top 5 most important games. in my opinion atleast.  Just cause there good doesn't mean they gave something to the industry. i see more Copie cats of the games i listed and i see more games use elements from the games i listed. the games you listed will be lucky to get a casual to even know what they are so how are those important. the games i listed helped make Videogames as mainstream as they are. the titles you listed minus ultima and Starcraft did not populrize gaming. What makes a game important to the Development of future titles is not just being good. heck Chrono Cross is amazing but it's not an important game to the Industry it took the same RG formula and fix some stuff but didn't even sell that well.

Also no game made this day in age is important to Adding new elements to the games minus a handfull. game like guitar Hero and DDR are some of the recent games of Importance becuase they added new genres thats important. but if a company made the best dance gamer ever and it doesn't populrize Dance games more it's not as important.

FF7 made RPG's mainstream something before was not Possible. heck they didn;t even release tales games till after FF and we got like some of the games toward the end of the series not the begining. Ultima is the only game o your list that Actually deserves to be Listed if ultima didn't catch on would there be WOW? no but WOW better but it's not as important to Ultima Since ultima was very popular and set a trend,

RE4 has influenced other video games
