I hear "bu..bu..bu TLOU is overrated" all the time here from jelly lems, hermits and sheep. But never "X is better than TLOU"

Let's be honest no game comes close to TLOU. Darks Souls and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are the only 2 who come close, the rest is a fcking joke in comparison with TLOU.

But pls do aware me on what game you think trumps TLOU as best game of last gen.

Anything at all. The game can't even be considered a game. it's a fucking glorified cinematic. An uninteresting and cliché cinematic to boot. If TLOU were a movie in a movie theater, I would have walked out because narratively it would have fallen below my reasonably set standards. TLOU is a -10/10 movie.

So to name one game....

I'd say Duke Nukem Forever.

I enjoyed games like Wolfenstien The Last Order, Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai, Bastion, Red Dead Redemption, Halo Reach, Uncharted 2, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare, and dozens of other games far more than I enjoyed TLoU. You'll just point to the Metacritic and tell me that I'm wrong because all of those games (except for Uncharted 2) scored better.

I didn't enjoy The Last of Us all that much. I think it's a very well made game, as are all of Naughty Dog's games last gen, but I think there are many more that are "better". Of course you'll disagree but you'll also try to prove my opinion wrong because you're clearly out to win an argument instead of recognize other people like other things.

Not sure exactly why you would come into a thread talking about overhyped games to defend a game so much. You aren't winning any arguments as there are no arguments to be had and you're not going to convince us that our opinions are wrong and we should change our minds.

This is why it's pointless to argue with you. You've turned a subject that is 100% subjective and based on opinions into a right and wrong debate as if your opinion is fact. You just want to prove people wrong and that you're right, even if there is no facts to be had.

Edit: Oh sh*t, I forgot about Gears of War. I'll change to that. Such an average franchise. Uncharted series are also overrated. How people are mentioning TLOU and forgetting about Uncharted 2 is baffling. I like the series but does not deserve all the praise it has. But Uncharted at least is fun with good characters and interesting settings. Gears is just another over-the-shoulder mediocre shooter

Gotta be Grand Theft Auto IV. The only game since GTA III that I had no interest in completing, and abandoned it. Didn't like the character, grainy look, could not get into it. Got tired of doing donuts and fishtails trying to turn around corners in that shit too.

Runner up would be the 1st God of War on PS2. Single player experience received extremely well despite a totally mediocre campaign offering (2, 3 bosses?). Got shit on from a campaign and gameplay perspective by DMC3, and all people did was complain about DMC being too hard.

oh no don't worry, last of us won the most awards, gotys and was critical acclaimed everywhere, but hey, i am sure the world will care about your opinion, please do continue, i will not be able to enjoy the game because some random guy in the internet is butthurt at the game xD

Well I just find it surprising/ amusing granted I did not read every thread on here since TLOU came out, but from what I recall, when ppl crap on the game a shitstorm of defenders pop up saying death to infidels for not liking the game.

This thread is the complete opposite and not too many defending game.

So...why games like RE4 and Heroes of the Storm are overrated but not Last of Us...personally, while i enjoyed the heck out of it, i think is overrated, is not THAT good.

Anyway, i have to go with Last of Us as many have mentioned in this thread, don't get me wrong, game is a solid 8 in my book, but again i didn't think it was THAT good, hell i don't think it would even be on my Top 10 favorite games of all time.

I agree with you. But that's not what my point was. All these things are pretty much attributed to 3D games and controller but anyways that's not the topic I'm going after. What I'm trying to point out here is the core gameplay. Uncharted has that all going for it. It has these clunky but gameplay elements. TLOU has nothing to show for its gameplay. It's even simpler than UC. Crouch, sneakup behind enemy then finish it or if the enemy sees you run somewhere and repeat. Even the shooting is very simple.

The things TLOU hyped for like stealth, dynamic gameplay, dynamic AI, weapon crafting, multiple paths etc are all bullshit. It's more linear than UC in that regard and much less fun. TLOU only had story going for it, remove the story and character and you have a 3/10 game.

I think people were enthralled with the narrative of TLOU more than anything else, and the likableness of Ellie. Def not one of the most fun games to play if you take its gameplay at face value. Wasn't even my fav game of 2013 let alone the gen.

The game is great though, and the melee combat was extremely satisfying. Hitting enemies with 2x4s, bricks and bottles never got old to me.

The reason I find the last of us overrated is because I went into it (remaster version was my 1st play) expecting to get the greatest game of all time. Instead I found it was a ducking/ sneaking/ plank moving simulator stuck on repeat with wobbely controls at best and a perpetual escort mission (albeit the lady did was not a total idiot and did not get in the way too much).

But hey look at those facial animations.... the beginning narrative was also top tier.

@Suppaman100: imo Just Cause 2, GTA V, Halo 4 and even RDR is better than TLOU. I played through TLOU on my friend's PS3, and I found it just plain boring for the most part. I can say that it has one of the coolest opening 30 minutes of any game ever though.

It depends.Everyone has different tastes.Personally I find witcher 3 and dark souls/bloodborne overrated.It's not the kind of games that I like but thats me.

Hm. I agree TLOU has fewer mechanics, but I think the ones that exist in both TLOU and Uncharted were done better in TLOU. That was my point. I don't particularly care if Uncharted has a lot of mechanics if they all suck. Take a classic like Thief (the original) - there's only a couple of gameplay elements. It's not inferior because it lacks stuff that is irrelevant to the game. It has the elements it needs and does them well.

Now, I'm not strongly disagreeing with your critiques of TLOU - they are all fair, and how much they bother one seems to depend on one's tastes. For me, I think most of the mechanics were solid. Shooting was definitely better IMO than in Uncharted; sneaking was passable - on harder difficulty it succeeded in making you TRY to be stealthy and enjoy icing someone with minimal personal injury (which is the point of a stealth mechanic). AI was certainly no dumber than Uncharted - I think smarter other than people complaining it ignored your buddies (but - stealth games with a buddy... it would hard to make it work WITHOUT the AI ignoring your buddy. It would probably have been an incredibly frustrating experience bordering on unplayable!).

I would never say any of the components were as good as they could be, but "3/10 without the story feels unreasonable" - many games would be a 3/10 if you removed huge core components of what the mechanics were explicitly designed around. The mechanics need to work in unison, not be singly ground-breaking even if you butchered the rest of the game, in my opinion.

As far as dynamic gameplay or AI or multiple paths - did they advertise this? Because you're right, they aren't there (other than maybe choosing between stealth or gunz blazin'). Still, I can't agree on judging the game based on a subset of its elements - they mechanics worked very well together and with the story. The package was strong. With Uncharted the package comes off very rough around the edges because it has only a thin story and instead relies heavily on "adventuring" mechanics that aren't sound. I'd go with Uncharted as higher on the overrated category

Anyway, that's my perspective - these sort of debates never really end, of course, because personal preference is too strong a factor

I am not a gamer that gives out a 10/10 easily. So MGS4, GTA4 are up there. I like both games a lot but not 10. TLOU is a great game but no more than a 9 imo.

Nothing comes close. Hype for PC was immense and it turned out to be better on console. It's one game that didn't require consolization....I bought a Razer NAGA just for it...then when I bought the game....there were like 5 buttons for spells.

RE4 - beginning of the destruction of the franchise with it's focus on action.

MGS4 - There are cutscenes that are longer than the average movie, then you play for 30 minutes to sit through another long cutscene. This is coming from a huge fan of the series too.

ODST - A very weak expansion to Halo 3.

GTA 4 - San Andreas was miles better.

Journey - I just didn't get the appeal.

I'm sure there are more I'm not thinking of.

The last couple of GTAs & the last few Naughty Dog games I think... not saying they were bad games, but just not as brilliant as everyone makes out IMO.

i have a lot of those. it doesnt mean that the game isnt good. i can see why people love these games. imo, they dont jive with me

• halo franchise - i tried multiple times. i even bought halo mcc thinking it would be better. i cant bring myself to finish one of the damn games
• gears franchise - i bought gears 1-3 as soon as i picked up 360. bullet sponged enemies irked me. story is meh took me 8 months to finish the first game. idk when ill finish 2 and 3
• shadow of the colossus - i tried multiple times. awesome concept, but i just dont dig it
• any call of duty past cod 4 (specially treyarch games)
• god of war 2 - too many puzzles. not enough action for me
• bayonetta - the whole time i was like wtf is going on
• resident evil 4 - idk how ppl like a game where you cant move while shooting.
• gta iv - that game does not deserve a 10 if san andreas did not get a 10
• bioshock - i dont dig the mechanics and how the game controls
• elders scroll skyrim - spent 40 hours on this game and i realized i didnt have a point.

GTA by a huge amount. So freaking boring. Would rather play the "GTA clone" Saints Row and even that doesn't hold my attention for long.

I can talk all day the flaws of RE4 for ITS GENRE and you wont be able to prove me wrong since its not a matter of opinion . TLOU for its genre was AAA easily. So try me if you want i dont mind , i got plenty of time.

The only thing TLOU excels in is its story. It was given its high rating almost entirely for its story alone. Which is a pitifully subjective way to review what are actually supposed to be video games.
