1. The game has to be well liked by the mainstream, reviewers, and us (so no COD because that is almost universally hated on). Nerkcon
This is a paradox. How can somethig be overrated if everyone likes it? Then again, it can't be called overrtated unless it's liked by everyone.
Like I said I was only going put in one game per genre and I was nervous about choosing from the FPS genre out of so many to choose from; Doom, Half-Life, Halo, Counter-Strike, Battlefield... the FPS genre is actually quite diverse when it comes to its representatives I decided to go with a racer instead, Gran Turismo is the most popular racing game world wide.No Halo? :|

You already have my answer in the second sentence. Also, I didn't want Call of Duty dominating the poll. Not universally liked. Anyway I have to say Gran Turismo because I find racing sims boring.[QUOTE="FragTycoon"]
No Halo? :|

um... are you saying that for your own statement?.... It's well known that most people who don't like sims racers don't like GT. Where it's not well known that there are a large percentage of FPS players out there who love FPS but think Halo is overrated (aka, most people who ever played competitive FPS on PC).

The second sentence was directed at the TC's questionFF,zelda something like thatfghnfggdfsgvsds
It's been argued over a million times but just to drive it home again, the only thing that makes FF games a series is thetitle and some recurring character names.
I think of FF as another way of SE saying "this is our main RPG", not a series.
To me, the last great Zelda game was OoT...
How much it pains me, I have to say Gran Turismo, the series simply havent been up the the generationshift to this gen, It is not that GT5 is bad, it is just that so many other driving games alone this gen have done... better...
Which leaves me to the other reason, Gran Turismo is a game series I often feel have gotten an universal free pass, there have been games that were about as good, but I often wondered why GT was considered the epitome of driving games.
As for the rest and why I did not pick them.
Mario: The king of platformers, I do not think alot of bad mario (platformer games) exists (altho there are quite a few cameo games I like alot less) The Mario games are consistant, impressive, and games I can sit down and play with a generation lower AND older then me, where we all are having fun. It deserves its place.
Street Fighter: For me every time I see a new SF game, I get kind of giddy, granted I never liked the spinff series all that much, and I effectively considered the SF franchice dead after the SF2 games (all the editions) But SF4... man it is good to play that, it just feels... right... I think it holds the crown for fighting game king, with good reason.
The Legend of Zelda: Now this one WOULD get my vote were it not because Im so facinated with skyward sword, the handheld games were good, but they were not "zelda great" to me, ofcourse it is subjective, so others might think otherwise, I am an old Zelda fan, starting from the first game on NES, and I liked the series alot till and incluting OoT, but then it fell off from me. Altho the games still were praised as somewhat of a GOD in gaming, I just diddnt feel it, and wondered why people thought they were so great.
Starcraft: Yeah, really, it can not be overrated when it is a countries national sport, that seres may not be to everyones liking, no fault in that, but is is so incredibly well made that is is borderline madness.
Nothing is overrated. That term is used by people that do not like a certain game or franchise. You might as well change the thread title to "Games that you dislike."
It doesn't matter what game it is. Just because someone does not like a game does not automatically make it "overrated."
Games you dislike =/= Games you think get more acclaim than they deserve.Nothing is overrated. That term is used by people that do not like a certain game or franchise. You might as well change the thread title to "Games that you dislike."

Any reason why you didn't like Majora's Mask? I didn't enjoy the 3 day limit, but this game was truly a masterpiece in my eyes. :)people dont get tired of these overrated threads_ they are useless, if something is overrated is because tis probably good, even if you dont like them
Pokemon is overrated EggHeadMan
I agree with this one. Not because its bad, but because it could be so much better and they dont do much from game to game. I loved Blue and Silver but come on.
Legend of Zelda, a pretty good franchise though I don't see it's huge appeal, one button combat with some decent puzzles.
Mass Effect and Uncharted also are IMO.
I am a Zelda fan, and I voted Zelda just because I am fed up with how defensive the other Zelda fanboys get over all the mistakes Nintendo has made with the series. It's as if the fanbase is convinced that it is impossible for Nintendo do ever do anything wrong with a Zelda game, and that has led to much head desking for me. I love the Zelda series and it is one of my favorites, but I get fed up how every time I point out something that Nintendo should have done better, the fans attack and say how Nintendo would be wrong if they did anything differently.TimstuffMaybe if you acutaly did something OTHER than complain fans wouldn't get on your case.
How about Skyward Sword? It looked awesome during e3 and yet here you are ignoring it.

Wait, what? I think you have the wrong franchise. ISn't the zelda fanbase well known for being polarised with a significant portion hating the recent release?
Besides, maybe your criticsms aren't as justified as you think?

What would exactly make a game overrated? Is it getting higher scores, is it how many people buy it and enjoy it, or is it a combination of both?
Where is Uncharted?
Gibsonsg527
Didn't read the OP. He said he wouldn't include any current gen games. I am inclined to agree though, Uncharted is a pretty average series.
I feel this poll will go one of two way; Zelda, cause people want to hate on Nintendo. GT, cause casuals can't keep their minds focused long enough to finish a race in a racing game (no saving mid race!:o).C_RulePretty much this "I don't like Sims so the game is automatically overrated."
I choose Mario, after Mario 64 they are just cash-ins on the name, almost like Activision with CoD.

mario, whats the point of making more, it should have died with the N64, paper mario 64 will probably be the best mario game ever madehadokenI enjoyed Sunshine more than 64, and I've also enjoyed the enhanced port of NSMB on the Wii. Also, if you're going to include a spin-off Mario game then I would have to say that each version of the Kart series has been an improvement over the last. As far as entries to series that were on the N64, I'm glad they didn't end Zelda with the 2 on N64 as those are my least favorites. To stay with the topic - I actually enjoy every series in the poll - even with certain games I may not have enjoyed - overall each have been fun playing and represent their genre's well...

I think people believe CoD4 was the first in the franchise.
