Most Overrated Game.......Again

I looked through previous threads and saw a lot of post like this, but majority of them presented the original author's idea of the most overrated game, and then a bunch of people denouncing it. So please just post your opinion of the most overrated game and why. Of course rebuttals and all are great but can we try to stay on topic?

I would have to say Zelda 64. ( That's what we all called it back then) I say this for two reasons. One is that when the game came out, nobody at school or around town was saying " greatest Zelda game of all time." That was probably because we had already played this game in 2-d, four different versions. And secondly because it is The highest rated game of all time.No game can live up to that hype, seriously. If the internet was more prominent then ( This site was called videogames.com I think) I feel that Zelda 64 would have earned itself a 9 or so.

Honorable mentions:

FFVII ( I love the game, 2nd favorite of all time. But fanboyism strikes again)

Halo 2 ( Halo 1 & 3 were great )

Super Mario Galaxy 2 ( A great game but no where does it have the depth for a 10. )

I agree 100%. OOT isn't the best Zelda game, so how can it be the best game ever?

I dont really like the word overrated but hey its system wars. I'll go with the Mario Galaxy games. They're pretty good but the level design was not as good as people are going crazy over, I find it extremely simplistic and quite boring to be honest. It's the type of design that when I played them I didnt stop or slow down have to think and overcome the obstacles I just kind of bulldozed my way through the game. I would start and next thing I knew I would have to stop myself because I was getting 40-50 stars at a time without thinking anything of it, I beat the entire game 120 stars within 4 sittings

And no I didn't completely finish the second game, the 120 green stars I have to say was the worst idea to elongate a games play time i've ever encountered, I got 20 and just couldnt go on, it was practically torture.

Major complaints

1. Repetitve and incrediblylinear single player gameplayer,but it was actually really fun at times.

2. Bad friendly Al

3. Incredibly cheap and glitchy but addicting multiplayer.The cheapness and glitches ruined the multiplayer for me.

4. A very convoluted story at times

I played the game's singleplayer a lot and watched my cousins play the multiplayer.

Comming from someone with a Duke Nukem Forever signature, I can't really value your opinion too much.

Most overrated is Half Life 2. It is a fantastic game, but not as good as others hype it to be.

I always question MGS4 spot as overrated. For example the game doesn't deserve a 10 cause no game does. But from the players I've heard mostly fair comments about the game. What's interesting is that the multiplayer mode was fun and addictive ( Tons of original modes and content ) but was a pain in the arse to get access to and wasn't part of the original package.

MGS4 was overrated from a critics stand point, but I think the players gave it fair justice. Unless anyone really does believe it to be this perfect game to end all games.

I say MGS4 and Halo3: ODST.

Id have to go with Dragon Age origins...so many people loved it but it was mediocre to me. I loved UC2 and ME2 so it wasnt overrated to me, it was rated just right TBH....especially uncharted. Its no MISTAKE that it gets 25 perfect scores...and gets GOTY and sets a record (I believe) for most awards with 150+? I mean that doesnt just happen by accident IMO.

Most UNDERRATED game would have to be Alan Wake. One of my favorite games of all time now...

What is your beef with Uncharted!? :P

While I really enjoyed ME2, I can understand your choice of that, as it has many inarguable problems, but Uncharted 2 does not. As much as people accuse Uncharted 2 of being just a cinematic experience, I feel it has some of the best gameplay this gen, and almost brings me back to the days of Goldeneye 64 for some reason.

The original Witcher. 7 at best imo.

Of all Time? Zelda OoT a 10/10 I don't think so more like a 7.5/10 and I'm being generous. The story felt kinda flat and didn't really fit in well with the series at the time "now it's all just all complete mess". The whole music thing I never really got and just found it annoying. The ending was blaa and to tell the truth I never really understood it or maybe I just don't want to. The lack of voice acting is understandable considering this is the N64 days, but other Zelda games after it have no excuse. The game play was good but static to say the least. To me OoT was repetitive enough to feel stale, but different enough so not to hit that Nostalgia spot. Most Overrated this Gen? Toss up between Dragon Age Origins and Call of Duty BO leaning more to DAO with SMG 2 coming in 3edShielder7

Bioshock - story was good, but a retelling of that in SS 2. Gameplay was mediocre and repetitive across the board.

Far Cry 1 - not a bad game by any means, but I just cant figure out why it gets so much love

GTA4 any recent cods and portal pick 1 or 2 I think both are ovvertated.

I noticed that there are a lot FPS on this topic. Would it be a fair assumption that the FPS is the most overrated genre?

Well then you would need to look at SMG2 if you want to go that route...It was declared "Perfect" but cmon how so? Its been done before, plus its mario (again) yet the game is PERFECT? To me perfect means it cannot be improved, its THAT good...I didnt see that with SMG1 or 2. They are fun, no doubt but far far far from perfect, especially seeing that Mario has been done to the moon and back, I dont care if he can climb things like theres no gravity, who cares.

Every game I can think of catches Flak no matter the score. People hate UC2 yet its one of my favorite games...People hate Alan Wake even though its one of my favorite games. People hate the CoD series even though it sells MILLIONS of copies the first week and gets great scores.

I only chose DAO because to a lot of people its one of the best RPG's this gen and I strongly disagree with that. It has awful graphics, bad animations, horrible character models, bland environments, unoriginal story and much much much much more. Lets not even get into DA2, its a disgrace to gaming that it scored so high. The game was a 5 at best...

I'd say oblivion. I can't point to an aspect of that game that wasn't either poorly designed or just plain redundant.
