Days Gone (PS 4). One of the most underated open world zombie survival game imo , with all the updates its more polished and even got NG + to carry over your stats, skills, weapon upgrades in next playthrough. You get to encounter largest zombie horde attack in any video game, which tests your nerves in dealing with them.

Well?

I didn't expect much of anything, and while there was some jank and awkwardness (similar to HZD) the game was an amazing experience overall.

Days Gone > Uncharted 4 easily IMO

I'll pick Rising Storm 2. Such a perfect Vietnam experience: it has choppers, it has the soundtrack, it has trees speaking Vietnamese,...

Days Gone would be a good candidate. Unfortunaly it has poor performance and controls badly.

You can play it now with all the updates, plays great and runs great. Hope you have a PS 4 Slim or Pro. But yeah, controls are awkard, takes time getting used to.

Titanfall 2. Probably the best sp campaign of its genre since HL2 and good mp options....but criminally overlooked due to its bizarre launch window.

I'd go with Sunset Overdrive.

Rage 2 for honorable mention. It has its issues but the combat makes up for them.

Also the people who played Astrobot know how amazing it is, but that number is tragically small.

Prey2017 was criminally underrated, it is the best System Shock 2 spiritual successor and is easily one of the best games I enjoy this gen has to offer.

Star Ocean 5 second place for me. Plenty of gamers knock it off for backtracking, but it's not like most of the others didn't also have that Star Ocean 1, you literally visited every continent at least twice for damn sakes, how is revisiting the entire world map twice not backtracking? Not even teleportation in that one, they added a massive side-quest system, but it's not like that's required, either. I feel like it gets way more flank than it deserves, generally speaking, and seemingly gamers were expecting it to be way better than pretty much the entire Star Ocean series has ever been.

@magnum3000: The sp campaign is better than the mp portion...but I had an mp session on xbox last week, so depending on your platform...yes.

@magnum3000: Yup, I have it on the pro.

I very much liked the survival mechanics, having to look after your bike, etc...

I just wish the game would offer me a 900p 60fps performance mode. The increased framerate would help me enjoy the game more. It feels sloppy to control at 30fps. And I feel the framerate often dips to 20s.

  • Prey 2017 is a fantastic game. Unfortunately it was troubled by the initial bugs but the game was simply a well crafted game that focused heavily on just playing the way you want to play using the mechanics of the game. The DLC Mooncrash is an innovative take on single player games.
  • Outer Wilds. This adventure game was able to capture the mystic of the original Myst games for me. Another excellently crafted game. Not for the fast pace gamer.
  • Titanfall 2. Best single player FPS campaign this gen.
  • Sunset Overdrive. Great game. Great mechanics but was overshadowed by console wars politics.

I'm playing through it as well, and I can agree with this statement.

Days Gone isn't a bad game, but it's not amazing either. It's a solid 7-8 game. And that is fine, especially since it's $40 or less now. Worth the Price of admission IMO. It's biggest issue is that it doesn't push any boundaries game play or story wise, I think the Hordes were supposed to do this but they are few and far between, and you never run into a horde. What would have been cool is if you were randomly traversing the world and all of a sudden BAM horde. But that's not how the game works.

The game sold very well, which is great for the developers. The game is made well and they deserve it. So for the fans maybe there will be a sequel, or Bend Studios at least gets a shot at making another game.

EDIT*

Been playing the game today and just ran out into a wondering Horde.........Holy crap. Took a while to finally run into one, but it happened.

Prey

Although I think most people who are in to that sort of game like it. It just had a few technical issues at launch and the whole naming perception thing.

Underrated? I’d have to say Ryse: Son of Rome. Now I don’t play SP games very often so I’m not big on the hack-n-slash genre, but I enjoyed Ryse’s gameplay and graphics.

Sea of Thieves is also fun and often overlooked or lambasted by those who haven’t played it. When you and a few buddies set sail, your adventures can get quite hectic and hilariously fun!

I’m seeing a few Titanfall 2 entries, but I enjoyed 1 much more so I think that game is being overlooked. A multiplayer only game that’s much better than the sequel...much, much better. It’s my favorite game of the generation.

yeah you can run into a horde, but your points are still valid.

one zombie or a group of zombies doesn't do much to instil fear, and an apocalyptic zombie game really should have some consistent element of terror / horror. bumping into a horde however, several hundred rabid zombies, definitely gets the pulse racing, but they're criminally under utilised in the game.

just to demonstrate how little bend studio knew how to utilise them, you can't even change your view on the motorbike to look behind you when you're trying to escape a horde. it's a simple thing that could've made the encounters so much more tense and atmospheric, but when you try to look behind you the view snaps back to the front, so you can't see how close they are or the size of the horde in pursuit. such a waste of what could've been amazing randomly generated moments.

it's a shame because at a mechanical level the game does a lot right. it's far more nuanced and polished than a lot of similar open world games. the problem is those mechanics are framed against a story which goes absolutely nowhere. i've never seen a game flatline so quickly. i spent 15-20 hours with it and so very little of note had happened i lost interest. 6.5-7/10 for me, polished but unremarkable and woefully fails to capitalise on its main usp

@Macutchi: I agree 100% very well said. The game is missing a couple of key features that really could have pushed it to be a much better game.

To the Dev's credit, this was their first game where they created their own universe in a long time. For a while they were just making PSP/Vita games from other established franchises. (Uncharted and Resistance psp games, this studio's first game was BUBSY 3D on PS1, and eventually made the Syphon Filter games)

So the studio has some learning to do, but luckily for them it looks like the zombie fad was still kickin and the game sold well.

That Days Gone with gamebreaking bugs after 1 year of launch and severe fps drops not to mention weird af storyline chain, generic gameplay and uninteresting open world?

Somebody explain in detail the gameplay. Is it an open world game with predominately stealth like H: ZD? Is it survival horror like RE? Something else?

For me the most underrated game this gen and probably of all time is Death Stranding.

Currently sitting on 83 on metacritic, but should be somewhere around 95-97.

Second place goes to Days Gone, which got 6/10 left, right and centre. I don't agree with that at all, it was at least an 8 and probably closer to 8.5/10. 71 on MC, should be 82-88 some where.

Amid Evil, game is awesome

Playing prey 2017 currently, also a fantastic game, only complaint is the enemy aesthetics arent that creative.

Paragon, the game was excellent, by far the best moba ive played, its a shame epic closed it down to move developers to fortnite, thier cash cow.

There is a team working on bringing it back, atleast epic had the decency to release the assets.

Wolfenstien new order/new collosus, machine head did an awesome job, the story has some issues but overall i loved playing thru them. The gunplay is top notch, feels so good.

I hear people bringing up sunset overdrive, I really need to play it, i downloaded it from gamepass, I plan on trying it after I beat prey.

Far cry primal- honestly my favorite in the series, it tried to be different and alot of people missed having guns, but I loved the direction it took. Far cry 4 and 5 are just more of the same imo. Primal did not get the respect it deserved, liked the change up.

Went ahead and bought Days Gone. Just getting started, but man the graphics, pop in and color in the game is really bad. Lots of blur as well.

There was a scene early on where two bikers on a single bike stopped because there was supposed to be a car blocking the road, but there was nothing there. I was thinking "there's plenty of room to ride through this "road block" but they stopped anyway, and then boom, a big truck popped in the space that was empty and they pushed it off the road and got ambushed. You'd think after all this time they could have fixed an issue like this with patches. And yes, I'm playing on the Pro.

The colors are really washed out in this game, and maybe it's a design choice but it looks really bad. The game might still be good, but after all the praise I'd heard about the graphics in this game I'm really disappointed. Then again, it could have something to do with the fact that I'm also playing Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order on Xbox One X and that game is breath taking.
