Defintion of a role-playing game off of Wiki:
"Generally, the player controls a small number of game characters, usually called a party, and achieves victory by completing a series of quests. Players explore a game world, while solving puzzles and engaging in tactical combat. A key feature of the genre is that characters grow in power and abilities, and characters are typically designed by the player."
Mass Effect clearly fits that description.

Yeah, it's an action RPG that feels more like a action game then RPG.
Sure, but "hayato_" was implaying that it's not an RPG at all.
Whatever floats peoples boat I guess. :) . Plus that definition could be used with alot of games that aren't RPGs, but owell. If it must
Plays more like a bad third person shooter rather then an RPG, buts thats just my opinon as well.
P.S. I wasn't the one that didn't call it an RPG. I just wanted tobackup the claim and feel ike I wasn't the only one who sawits flaw;)

Thread = Fail! No Dragn Quest 9, No Little King's story and you're are taking a starwars game seriously.
Yandere
Why would he take JRPGS seriously? Trash genre with trash games.
Funny, because I could say WRPGs are just crappy sandbox action games that provide you with the options of:
*act unrealisticly nice*
*normal reaction*
*act unrealistically bad*
But I'm not going to generlize against a WHOLE GENRE because that is ignorant and idiotic because I haven't played even 1% OF EVERY WRPG MADE.. So should you.
It's better than having the game choose one of those options for you.
I thought I was the only one who saw this.[QUOTE="MegajerkNYC"]
Mass Effect isn't really an RPG though it's a shooter with a lot of talking.

I don't know how this game is even a RPG. Traded it in after two weeks of meh
Lets examine, shall we?
Character levelling system: check
Powers, skills, and attributes measured by numeric stats: check
Customizable cIasses: check
Upgradeable weapons and armor: check
Customizable party system: check
Detailed and expanding storyline with rich character development: check
Loads of NPC interaction: check
Numerous side quests to add to the story: check
Multiple plot outcomes based on players choices: check
Final Result - RPG!!!!
And NO amount of ignorance or denial can counteract the FACTS.

This. Apparently people think RPGs can't be shooters or else they are not RPGs.

Other then the story overall in WRPGs are linear no matter what choices you choose, other then some that have multiple endings.. Some JRPGs have multiple options to choose from also, they often have a visual novel/dating sim style to them if you.

Still plays more like a bad broken third person shooter, rather then an RPG, but whatever floats you guys boat. Im not gonna get inbetween it P.S. I wasn't even the one that said it, but I will acknowlegde it. Its you guys opinion.Edit: Maybe if you guys said under a Third Person Shooter/ RPG hybrid, with it tending heavenly under third person shooter then maybe.

Maybe if you got the fact that you need to allocate skill points to the different weapons (assault rifle, shotgun, pistol, sniper rifle) to improve your characters proficiency with it, which also affects the weapons damage and accurcy, you'd better understand how combat works in an RPG context instead of a 3rd person action context. It's no different from fantasy based RPGs where you have to invest skill points into swords or bows. Bottom line, RPG gameplay, just that the main weapons are guns instead of swords.
Oh and in my initial post, I was quoting both you and MegajerkNYC (you quoting and supporting his statement), but your quote got removed from the chain in StealthMonkey's post.

Yeah, thats why books and movies are terrible storytelling mediums.
Of this list I voted on Dragon Age: Origins, but I'm waiting for more RPGs.
I'll buy this year:
For 2010, I want:
Hard choice, but I chose Diablo 3 cause I love blizzard. Dragon Age and Mass Effect were the other two I'm anticipating
I voted Final Fantasy, as I think it will have the most polish. Dragon's age will dissapoint, but hopefully it will still be fun.
God I really hope that Diablo 3 comes out this year.

How so?

I don't know what he was referring, but it was hyped to be the spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate 2...and right now it's just looking like a lame knock-off of The Witcher, so I'm personally not too hyped about it.
Final Fantasy XIII. I'll be playing in Japanse and then I'll wait a long time to play in English because there are so many other games coming out.

But you can do that in alot of other games as well, games that aren't classified as RPGs. Parasite Eve is clearly an action/RPG (It has guns as well)I never said that the game having guns doesn't make it an RPG, nor some of its systems. The overall combat (majority)and system set-up (some) doesn't classify it as one in my book, but i'll take the Third person shooter/RPG classification. I'd have to play it again and throughly
Does anyone else see the funny truth about this poll? This poll shows how amazingly broad the role play game genre has gotten.
Dragon Age (my choice for the poll) is the only true RPG on the list. Now listed as CRPG (Computer/Classic Role Play Game). This is the closest to an actual role play game (pen and paper games) you will ever get in a video game.
Mass Effect is more of an RPG than any other game on that poll besides Dragon Age. The RPG aspects aren't as deep as a CRPG, but it's close enough to be called one none the less. It's a RPG, only with gameplay of a Third Person Shooter. This is what I would really call an ARPG(Action Role Play Game) unlike the next game I'm about to talk about.
Diablo is a RPG with all the RPG aspects cut off execpt for leveling (which is heavily dumb down) and combat. I can't honestly see why people would like it. If you want to hack and slash, get a true hack and slash game like God of War, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, etc.
Final Fantasy is weird take on the genre. JRPGs (Japanese Role Play Games) are, but at the same time, are not. You have choices... but most of the time they don't have any realy affect on the story. They are more like interactive anime.
The Old Republic is an online adventure game, a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Play Game). These games have the least amount of role playing in them other than the people in the games who are literally role playing through chat. But Bioware said they are going bring story and choices into it, it should be interesting.
Edit* From the Poll Mass Effect 2 because Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin, and Jennifer Hale are voice actors in the game.
