I have played the Wii on numerous occasions and I have come to the conclusion that a game like SPM would be just as fun to play with standard controls. Although the potential for some great FPS's are there (MP3) I also remember beating Halo and MP whilehaving a great time doing it with thestandard controller. I just played Forza 2 and not once did I say to myself "You know, this game would be much more fun if I could use the Wiimote!". Nope. Not once.

Bottom line: I just don't see the Wiimote as "innovative". It's just a different way to play games. IMO, I think Nintendo focused too much on new controls rather than the things that make the 360 so good...online, power and great third party. Yes, I understand that power isn't everything but it does allow for some pretty expansive games. If you are the type that thinks power is not needed, don't complain when you can't play Oblivion on the Wii.

I'm not saying the Wii is a bad system. I am saying the Wiimote does not make it great.

Now I'll put my flame shield on.

There's no right or wrong answer in whether or not graphics or gameplay can be more immersive, because some people think that the wiimote makes games more enjoyable than anything else, and for some people it's the graphics.

In some cases, actually it does make the game more fun to play. Wiisports and Trauma Center wouldn't be as fun with a standard controller would it?

SPM doesn't even use motioncontrols (besides pointing at invisible things).

You played Super Paper Mario and think it would still be fine with traditional controls? Did you actually play Super Paper Mario? Last time I played it, the only Wiimote controls was the pointer for that door light thing.

I have one point i disagree with you on. I own a wii and I find that it sparks my imagination when I play other things. I played GTA:VC on PC a couple months back and thought that wii controls would be a great way to shoot who I want to shoot every time, and get off more shots in the process. Motion controls could have use for strafing or specialty uses.

Idont play sports games that much, but wiisports has me wondering what fully flushed out sports games would be like. Wiisports is great, but ultimately shallow. I want a fully flushed out boxing game on the wii with some real names and complex strategies. This goes for other sports as well.

These are just examples. My general attitude about the wii is that it will not only have original ways to play games we have already, but it will have its own genres as well. (I dont ordinarily gush by the way, but you're talking about imagining possibilities here)

It's not like motion sensing is all the Wii can do. The fact that a game uses motion sensing does not make the game based on motion sensing. Shaking the Wiimote in SPM wasn't the focus of the game; the focus was switching between 2D and 3D.

In fact, there will be games that won't use motion sensing at all. Super Smash Bros Brawl is even reccommended to be played with a GC controller.

I honestly don't think that motion control makes any difference except make much more unique games possible and fun.

The standard controller has nothing wrong with it. All that is in involved is personal taste.

But, all that aside, I do think that Nintendo got so much market share simply from hype. I have several friends who have a Wii and just don't play it anymore. The originality of motion-control just wore off on them. And sooner or later, it'll wear off on everyone. Hype and marketing saved them this generation. Had they stuck with a standard controller, Nintendo would be dead last in this race. The Wiimote, as much as I dislike it, was a brilliant marketing ploy.

Don't use Super Paper Mario as an example. The only big things that use the motion sensing is the flashlight-searching thing, and the arcade games.

A game like Trauma Center, on the other hand, wouldn't be as great if you used a GameCube controller.

It's too bad the game itself is impossible on a standerd controller. I sure as hell wouldn't like to play an impossible game when I can play a possible game on a new controller.

No its not. You could map the same kind of range of motion to an analog stick. It isn't impossible, an analog stick just isn't as accurate. As the FPS genre has illustrated, innaccuracy can easily be cured. By your logic, teh FPS are impossible on teh xbox because of the inaccuracy.

No, it would simply not be possible on other controllers. You map out a pointer on an anolog, but the speed at which you must use it to play the game, you'd need to set your movments VERY fast, which would cause you great innaccuracy. Either that or you'd have to set your movments slow, which would cause you great trouble in menuvering the screen. The pointers movment simply ould cause so much difficulty that it would be impossible to be the better version.

So I guess the Wiimote is good for specific games. Real innovation there.

So I can't use SPM as an example. This is because the thing is useless for one of Nintendo's best games.

Way to go.

Once again, pointers do not add some kind of imaginery extra range of motion. Let me explain how its possible on a controller. Analog stick controls the surgical tools. A button activates an action. Tadah, I just showed how its possible. Innaccuracy does not mean that its impossible. Once again, if innacuracy mean't something was impossible, then FPS games would be impossible on the 360. Its easy to remedy something like this.

Okay fine then. What about all the other distinctions in the console wars? By that token better graphics doesn't make a game look any better. I could look at awii game's screenshot for a multiplat like madden, and I can say that it looks better than the same screeshot on the 360.

Entirely true. Many people may prefer the art style of say Odin Sphere over Gears of War. Totally valid opinion. There are different kinds of graphical fidelity.

I havn't laughed so hard since the last ps3_ftw thread. Playthe game, kid, it's simply impossible to exicute right outside of wiimote and possibly ds. So you can move the tool and you can activate teh tool, now can you fill in 6 internal cuts on the stomach while keeping your patient in stable condition in under 10 seconds. Any longer and your patient will likly die by vitals.

And if you say slow the game down, then you have already lost your initial argument of "It could be just as good on any other controller"

i agree with the TC to an extent. the wiimote doesent make everything great...in fact it can make things worse when devs dont put in the effort.

at the end of the day (and this appplies to all 3 systems) its great games that make a system great. the wiimote does offer new opportunities for devs to try something a little different but until they deliver, any advantage the wiimote may have is void. we are seeing some great titles that use it well mind (RE4, Trauma center for eg) though and we will see many more.

however i disagree on the tech side allowing games to be more expansive. morrowind is a far bigger game than oblivion (and personally id take morrowind over oblivion...both are great but morrowind is a better game imho). elder scrolls games before that were even bigger. what makes an immersive game is a great developer with talent, passion and a constant drive to make the best game they can. Deus ex 1 is still a far more immersive game than anything that has come after it imho. and it runs on the first version of the unreal engine.

And if you say slow the game down, then you have already lost your initial argument of "It could be just as good on any other controller"kittykatz5k
Its your opinion that slowing down the game would make it any worse. Some people may prefer this style of gameplay. You can never prove this wrong. As long as the possibility of that person out there exists my arguement stands. I've shown that the game is possible on a gamepad through easily mapping certain pre-existing actions to its controls. From there its a matter of opinion. If we used your train of logic NO ONE would prefer console shooters because its less accurate, but some people clearly do.

[QUOTE="GunSmith1_basic"][QUOTE="Vandalvideo"][QUOTE="GunSmith1_basic"] oh god not this again! Objectively speaking, you are correct, but everything about video games is subjective. If the wii's controllers are viewed by the subjective majority as superior for a game like FPS, then for all intents and purposes, it is superior.Vandalvideo
However, that doesn't make it a fact that its superior. Its still an opinion.

There are different kinds of graphical fidelity.

what about the things you could measure objectively? It is objectively true that the 360 can do anything that the wii can do graphically, but not vice versa. There is no reason that Odin Sphere could not appear on the 360, graphically speaking. But, the ps2 (platform for Odin Sphere, for those who dont know) could not handle gears of war.

The wii can turn that back onto the 360. The motions that the wiimote is capable of, as well as the pointer function allow for an ease of movement and time saving for moving the game that you could measure. (as kittykatz pointed out). Motion sensing, I'm not sure how that would be translated onto a standard controller exactly, but it would not be a simple thing. not that consoles using standard controllers would want to attempt it, but then again the wii isn't going to attempt gears of war graphics either

Another entirely valid view point. You cannot disprove the facts about systems. HOWEVER, don't for a second think that facts can prove or disprove an opinion. Technical aspects can never disprove someone saying, "I prefer the art style of Odin Sphere". Sure the 360 is more graphically advanced, but that still can't prove him wrong.

There's much mroe to a shooter than speed, trauma center is all about speed an accuracy however. Your argument does not exsist because you cannot present a person in their right mind who would say a game like this could be done perfectly on another controller. With your train of logic, I could make any wild claim like that as long as the possibuility of someone out there enjoying it exsist. I could make a wild claim that gears of war would be just as good on wii as long as there exsist the possibuility of someone, right?

Motion control is a gimmick and I think is very lame. I hate it in my PS3 controller.

Don't use Super Paper Mario as an example. The only big things that use the motion sensing is the flashlight-searching thing, and the arcade games.

A game like Trauma Center, on the other hand, wouldn't be as great if you used a GameCube controller.

Vandalvideo

Opinion. Someone out there might find Trauma Center just as great on a standard controller.

someone could find trauma center better looking than geow too but those would be outliers.

Actually, you cannot use the opinion arguement to disprove a fact. Its a FACT that Gears could not reach the same kind of graphical fidelity on a Wii. You can not use opinion to disprove fact. Its as simpel as that. I do not have to provide evidence of such a person existing. Let me break things down for you. Fact: Trauma Center can be done on a standard controller. Your opinion: Trauma Center can't be done better on a standard controller. Hence its impossible. Entirely valid opinion, HOWEVER, it does not disprove my fact that Trauma Center CAN be done on a standard controller. Now as far as whether or not it can be done better on a standard controller. There is always an antithesis to an opinion. I don't have to prove that someone such as that exists. I could very well be that person. The second I say, "Its my opinion that Trauma Center is better on a standard controller" you could never disprove that.

So the best original game to make good use of the Wiimote, judging by this thread,is Trauma Center.

Oh, boy. Let me run right out there to get this ultra-exciting game.

Sure, if we're talking accuracy. Once again, that doesn't prove that Trauma Center can not possible ever be done on a standard controller.

This is why we use gamespot for our opinions. To avoid the conflict of that 1 person in the world with the wild claim of BS on a game clearly not ment for something. Since the begining ot systemwars, it's been declared that your opinion, that guy's opinion, most people opinions, are meaningless in terms of gmaespot, and says this:
"For the most part, the controls have a great feel to them and could make a believer out of you if you're still on the fence about the Wii Remote."

There will always exsist the possibuility, kid, but that doesn't mean it means anything. We center our opinions on 1 site for a reason, to cut the crap and confusion of BSpossibuilities like this.

Trauma center is about 2 things, accuracy and speed, Why do you say accuracy does not matter?
