[QUOTE="Kruiz_Bathory"]This is nintendo, they can do whatever they want bro. So movies on the go are ok now. gandaf007

Were they ever not okay?

Interestingly enough...People on here were always saying "its a GAMING device" "Its a GAMING device!" And the PSP was always dissed for having the ability to play movies. Now Nintendo is doing it And all of sudden playing movies is excepted. Now that Nintendo no longer makes gaming devices and now makes multiple media devices, is it safe to say that the PSP was ahead of its time? That the PSP was too early in the multimedia handheld trend....Because it seems to me that it is NOW excepted but in 2006 is was a bad idea.

I think all that says is that UMD was a really stupid idea.

What's the point in watching 3d movies on a 3 inch screen?

svetzenlether

I love how on the PSP, being able to watch movies is a huge plus, but on the 3DS it would suddenly be a useless feature. System Wars strikes again!!

I've never listed movies as a plus for PSP. I don't own a PSP. I do own a DS and an iPod touch. Personally, I think watching movies on a 3 inch screen would be pointless. I'd never buy a UMD movie. When I buy movies, I buy blu-ray, but I've never bothered putting the digital copy on my iPod, because I prefer to watch movies on a big HD tv with other people. None of that has anything to do with the post you quoted. Let me try to explain.

"What's the point in watching 3d movies on a 3 inch screen?"

I highlighted the part you missed before. While I may not care for portable movie watching, I understand many people do like it. I just don't get the point of 3D movies on such a small screen. I guess it's my inability to see fake (or simulated) 3d, but even if I could, I would think that I would care about 3d in movies a whole lot more on a big screen than on a tiny one where nobody can watch it with me. If everyone else thinks it's gonna be awesome, that's fine. I just don't see the point. Hence me saying "What's the point?"

The point is that the functionality is present in the system already, so it's sort of a given that any video playback on the system is going to be 3D-capable.

Plus the fact that so few people own 3D sets at home means that the 3DS will be the only source of 3D video outside the theater for most people, until the full-size 3D displays catch on.

Which is fine, and a much more valid answer to my question than the other guy implying that I go around praising PSP's UMD movie playback while ridiculing 3ds for having movie playback (either of which you would be very hard pressed to find an example of me doing).

Obviously for me, I could care less about having a source for simulated 3d video, seeing as how I can't, well, see it. But I still think I would prefer 3d on a big screen with glasses over 3d on such a small screen, even if it is glasses-free.

[QUOTE="Dahaka-UK"][QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"] Well, the top screen is only 800 x 240.jun_aka_pekto

Oh well nevermind then. Still isn't a bad res for a handheld. I'm reading that the PSP is only 480x272.

The video quality on the PSP still looks great though after all these years.

That's Dogfights (The Last Gunfighter) playing on the PSP.

If the 3DS plays movies then it'll be great. I might buy one just for myself. I know my kid wants one. Just wondering what format will the videos be in.....

Edit: In case a mod might find the PSP video image questionable, I have the Dogfights DVD sets.

I like this post!! BUT I have to say the 3000 looks better than the PSP 1000..which actually looks good in your photo. The format will likely be copy written mp4s like what Sony & Apple sell.

[QUOTE="fastr"]it's a feature.. don't like it don't use it. For 3d movies, it could be pretty cool. I'd rather use a 3ds and get 3d without having to wear glasses and get a headache. ianuilliam

From what I understand, most people that get headaches or nausea from watching 3d has nothing to do with the glasses, but rather the way their brain processes the stereoscopic effect. Meaning if you get headaches from watching stereoscopic 3d with glasses, autostereoscopic 3d without glasses will most likely have the same effect. The option of turning the effect slider down on the 3ds may help, but at the expense of getting the full 3d effect.

Yes well I have a lazy eye, so thats what gives me the headaches.. and why I don't care for 3d at all. I'm pretty curious to try out the 3ds when its out tho, just to see how my eye reacts to it. I doubt i'd buy one even if it didn't bother me, because I just never use the handhelds I have now.. ds and psp, so why would I use a 3ds? It's a cool piece of tech tho.

Sounds to me like the 3ds won't work any better for you than any other stereoscopic 3d. It's still based on seeing a different image with each eye, it just uses a different method to split the images. All stereoscopic 3d is fundamentally the same though. Each eye gets a slightly different image, and when your brain tries to put the two together, the overlapping images create a 3d visual effect.

Except of course the colors are not dimmed, the brightness isn't sucked away, the ability to adjust the 3D to your liking, and no need for glasses.

Those are reasons why people get headaches for 3D, you know. Otherwise, they would get headaches just by looking with your own eyes.

The stereoscopy itself is what causes headaches, at least for people with lazy eye/strabismus like the user he was talking to. It doesn't matter whether glasses are used or not.

Exactly. Most people (such as the guy I was addressing) who get headaches or nausea from stereoscopic 3d get it from the way their brain reacts to trying to combine the two images, not from dimmed colors or brightness. Stereoscopic 3d is not viable (or even possible) for lots of people, with or without glasses.

"Lots of people" Sure, a couple of million people is "lots", but you count these things in percentages, say 5%?? of the population can't experience 3D perfectly, it's not "lots of people" even if the actual number is huge.

True, I doubt it's any large percentage or 3D wouldn't get as much money poured into it as it is currently.

Even I can see 3D fine, and I have slight strabismus.

I have 5 movies on my PSP NONE are on UMD. iIts unwise to assume things. I have already made my point. I am one of the few gamers on here that does not get upset when a device evolves. I think its great for the industry. A movie is a movie, we all have our preference of how we want to watch. Its interesting that Nintendo is doing what Sony & Apple are doing. So again 5 movies....none on a hardcopy.
