I remember when gamers wanted AWESOME games, with AWESOME gameplay, and wanted to see the next big thing, and were yelling at the console-makers to produce something new. but now... now you've got people wanting a 7-8 year gap between consoles? That's rediculous IMO, who wants to wait EIGHT years of your life before a new console comes out? if you're 20, you will be almost 30 years old before a new console comes out... that's a bit rediculous IMFO...

And for systemwars quota: The ps3 and 360 are outdated, and won't make it 8 years without a new console, it's gonna look archaic. And that's NOT to say that they won't be fun to play, it's kind of like the DS. I LOVE IT and it's no where near as flashy as the psp, and I love NES and Genesis. But don't you think that 2-3 years down the road, it's time for something new? Your old games won't dissapear I promise, I've been gaming since the beginning, but I want to see Cloud look damn near real, and I want Samus to have awesome physics with tight particle effects while keeping the Adventure that makes the games so awesome. I want X and Zero back and in SideScrolling Awesomeness, or even a megaman64 esqe game, I loved that.

the 360 is not going to be dropped when the new xbox comes out, because it MAKES MS money instead of losing it. it's gonna be there for a while. So why not let the people who would like to get the new hardware get it? otherwise everyone who wants real games are just going to PC. I prefer consoles, but do you know how much changes in EIGHT DAMN years for PC's? they're gonna have awesome games that make crysis look like a joke, and we're not even going to be able to have their lowest end games, and still some people will be saying, T3H c377 is amazing and teh ps3 is a 24yr console!

If you think Next Gen Should start no sooner than 2012, I don't understand why, I personally would love to see where games go and would love to see how they progress,

I don't really care about the things you mentioned. A 5 or so year gap between the consoles is fine by me. Guess that makes me a casual gamer.

Who wastes their life waiting for a console? I would not mind gaps that large but I just don't game the way I used to. I don't bother getting a new PC but once every six or so years now and I can afford one right now I just don't feel like dealing with it. So my PC gap is about that large, if I do bother to get a new gaming rig.

I am also still playing PS2 games that I missed and a few Xbox games. I have more games then I will ever need and there is still a lot that has yet to be done with this generations hardware.

Sadly, seven or eight years is not a long time at all. Shame, we lead such short lives. Love your games but enjoy what you have. How much of life is wasted waiting?

What the hell are you talking about? 5 is fine, 7-8 however isn't.

uh, no because I think 5 maaaaybe 6 years is fine, I love to see how much games can progess on consoles and I can see myself thouroghly enjoying my 360 for 8 years and FAR beyond. but I think that 2 years from now I would like to have a new console, why? because it's exciting! I hope I'm not the only one who gets into a spur of new gens. I want to see awesome player models, dense forest. I want Crysis left in the dust and I want the next Halo/Unreal/FF's 7-8 years is **** Because consoles DO progress even without the hardware being changed. I have a 2000 laptop (lenovo z61p) if I wanted a Gaming PC I'd have one.

Crysis will be left in the dust by other PC games, long before it is by a console.

Also, if you look at some of the launch games vs late games in any gen, the gaps become really big, look at an early PS2 game versus a late one, or a launch 360/PS3 game versus those that are coming out now, I think while they have room to expand, they shoulden't give up quite yet, 2010 or 2011 should be a good time to stop I suppose, it all depends on when developers can stop upping themselves.

Six years is the sweet spot but seven or eight is fine by me. I spent all of last gen PC gaming so I missed a lot of ps2 rpg's and playing through them now is awesome. I left that MMO addiction behind me.

1) I agree there are a lot of casuals. The vast majority of people playing games now are casual But it isn't the "hardcore" gamers demanding the next big thing the way you claim. THAT is the casual and always has been. I have been gaming since the begining of consoles. ANd the only time I've ever heard people whining and begging for the next big thing is fairly recently in the industry. It has become much more common NOW that casuals dominate. Why? Because casuals only care about gaming so long as they believe it defines them. Therefore, they only care about something for as long as they can show it off, or impress their friends, etc. Once that wears off, they are whining for the next "big thing" because they define themsevles through their accessories and possessions and gaming is now one of those accessories.

Back in the day, people were playing games of all kinds and loving them. Sure, we looked forward to the new consoles one day coming out, but mostly we worried about the PRESENT and playing as much as we could. It was pointless to obsess about something years into the future when there were great games NOW to play.

2) Y0u have shown you have no idea what you are talking about and how you are a casual yourself. I would also go so far as to say you are not a gamer because you are more worried about graphics and tech than actual games. The PS3 is far from outdated as a console. We are only now seeing hints of what it can do. And nobody has ever said another console won't come out. Just that the PS3, like the PS1 and PS2 before it, will be supported for 10 years. This is an indisputable fact.

3) YOu can't guarantee that won't be the case. I personally think the 360 will stick around, but MS has already killed off one console to essentially force people to buy their next gen. MS doesn't just (wrongly) believe in the headstart...they NEED it. And the best way to get that headstart is to kill the previous console. Having said that though, MS needed the headstart this gen, but they probably won't need it next gen. As you said, they are making money and have been fairly successful with the 360. But nothing is set in stone. Who would have thought a couple years ago that Sony would launch a console at $600?

Persona 4 is coming to the ps2. THey are still making a game I want for the ps2!

Gaming is not what it used to be and power is becoming a moot point until some totally new way of playing games comes along. With the next generation of console people won't be power obsessed anymore, hell, many of us are already.

Well PC gaming always has new hardware every 6 months at the very least and every now and then a new OS comes out with a new version of DirectX and theres a hubub about compatability and 3dmark and its very much like console upgrading growing pains.

In all honesty you don't have to worry about a new Halo yet, there are pleanty of new IPs coming weeks away that will make you forget most other games because you are playing them so much. To name but a few new IPs: Spore, LBP, Left 4 Dead, Mirror's Edge, Rage, Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy 13, Bioshock on PS3, Diablo 3, Fable 2, Starcraft 2, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Gears of War 2. You can guess where i start to trail of into obscurity but theres a lot happening right now.

Well said about the definition of the casual gamer. It is the casuals that are so horny for the next generation and when it arrives, forget about the older stuff. Some of the best ps2 games came out so late in it's life. Some after the ps3 was already out.

Consoles are really expensive this gen, and not everybody can afford to buy the next ones when they come out. I just bought a PS3 a few months ago, and i certainly don't want to buy another one in a couple of years.

2012 is the perfect time for the next gen, IMO.

Also saying "If you think next gen should start in 2012, you're not a gamer FACT" is a really unfair thing to say.

But I still love games man. I love when my girl sees me playin games she's like your such a kid. Then I blast through the interstate to dinner and she's like MAH MAYAN! ha ha

I don't like the look of the new one anyway :( sweet sweet wheels. That'd cost me twice as much in the UK to get one, one day !!! :)

"If you think Next Gen Should start in 2012, you're not a gamer FACT."

This theead seems like a bad attempt at trolling.

I'm not in any hurry for the next ge to start. I spent $1000 on game consoles this gen, and I'm not in any hurry to plunk down more. Further, I am really enjoying the games this time around. I'm completely satisfied with my consoles and I feel no need to buy more.

I'm not sure what the definition of "gamer" is, but I would think that it is somebody who plays games. In the strictest sense, it would apply to those who play any type of videogames. I know a lot of gamers that have not made the switch to the current consoles, mainly because they can't justify spending the money. What you just suggested is comprable to a fundamentalist Christian saying that you have to wear a tie to church and read the King James Version of the Bible in order to be a Christian. Gamers, like Christians, come in many varieties, and you cannot pigeonhole somebody because of their stance on one issue. Sorry.

2011 is most likely. But maybe MS wants a year head start and launches in Fall 2010 instead.

Too many people here who just got their console(s) like to conveniently forget that this gen started almost three years ago.

Persona 4 is coming to the ps2. THey are still making a game I want for the ps2!

Gaming is not what it used to be and power is becoming a moot point until some totally new way of playing games comes along. With the next generation of console people won't be power obsessed anymore, hell, many of us are already.

Coyo7e

That is true as well, I'll be buying Persona 4 day one, and I think if they can do cheap prices, nothing over $399, a new console every 5 years isn't bad.

TC, I know what you're saying but I disagree.

One of the best things about when a new console comes out is being able to see the huge leap, i'm getting a new PC so i'll see gradual increases as i upgrade, but if you don't have a PC it's great to buy a new console 6-7 years later and you get a huge WOW because of the big leap.

Both consoles will suprise people anyway, just compare GTA3 to God of War 2 on PS2, and that system was weak as hell haha.

I see nothing wrong with a 10 year cycle so as long as the games are good. I'm not the kind of gamer that points out how textures don't match up with Crisis or something. I don't need the details, just good games. And the PS3 has the hardware for that.

True. I want full BC with that console and I would like to see the old one not die so fast. I was not huge on the Xbox but I liked it. I love my 360 though and don't want to see games stop being made for it after the next xbox is released.

I am playing a ps2 game right now and a PC game that any PC from the last four or five years can play.

Rogue Galaxy and Sins of a Solar Empire.

Sadly, seven or eight years is not a long time at all. Shame, we lead such short lives. Love your games but enjoy what you have. How much of life is wasted waiting?

Coyo7e

That's my point ^_^ Why waiste that much time? We really do lead short lives, and I think that 5-6 year gaps are perfect, but 7+ is just a bit too much. 8 years really isn't a long time, and in that short amount of times Technology increases rapidly, and I enjoy at least having the new consoles available.

Go for it man, 5lbs of boost is NOTHING on that engine and you get 200 hp out of it easy. Mine would kill the new one, and I could put 12lb of boost and have 900hp. (would need more engine work and It's already tough as hell to drive sane ^_^) but this car is the most fun I've ever had, just unbeatable experience.

That was supposed to be Hardcore gamer, thanks for pointing that out. but I still stand by the fact that new games will still come to the xbox 360 beyond the newest consoles, I personally would like to have the OPTION to have a new cool/flashy system. and no one makes anyone buy a new console, and if you truly don't want to get into the next gen til 2012 then that's fine cause when you finally decide to you'll have a huge library to work with and pick out one or two games that really stand out to you.

No YOU are the one who is not a gamer, you are clearly some sort of Graphicer, face it, people play games to have fun, not to mast****** over the graphics...
bobbetybob

excuse me? I love games, and it's not all about graphics to me at all. I like new toys lol that's why we buy games right? to play them? So how can you fault me for not wanting to wait 8 years for a new console? I still play Megaman X on my SNES chief, so don't assume something about someone you have no idea about. And please keep the rude immature comments to a minimum

Thank you, because for some reason everyone thinks that as soon as a new console comes out they are taken at gunpoint to buy it. 5-6 years is quite a while. that's the difference from a 12 year old to becoming an adult. Alot happens throughout that time. So why can't my gaming be the same?

i agree with you in theory...however, a lot of consumers just won't bite on a 5 year cycle, and the manufacturers have to be assured that they will move enough units to eventually make a profit. if you don't have the consumer interest, its just not going to happen.

" the 360 is not going to be dropped when the new xbox comes out, because it MAKES MS money instead of losing it."

RROD anyone? M$ loses more than Sony does over the PS3?

Five years is far too short imo. I don't want to have to pay a huge amount for a system like the PS3, get a couple dozen games at most and then have to spend that huge amount all over again. Besides, the games keep coming and they're doing nothing but getting better since the gen started, no need for a new system.

Sigh... No, they both lose money because of their hardware, Sony because its underpriced and M$ because of RROD. Or are you just going to deny RROD loses them money

[QUOTE="VulcanMage119"]

I remember when gamers wanted AWESOME games, with AWESOME gameplay, and wanted to see the next big thing, and were yelling at the console-makers "GIVE US THE NEXT THING!" and "PLLLLEEEASE HURRY!" but now... now you've got people wanting a 7-8 year gap between consoles? That's rediculous, who wants to wait EIGHT years of your life before a new console comes out? if you're 20, you will be almost 30 years old before a new console comes out... that's a bit rediculous IMFO...

And for systemwars quota: The ps3 and 360 are going to be severely outdated, and won't make it 8 years without a new console, it's gonna look archaic.

the 360 is not going to be dropped when the new xbox comes out, because it MAKES MS money instead of losing it. it's gonna be there for a while.

If you think Next Gen Should start in 2012, you're not a gamer FACT.

ZIMdoom

All good points. I'm not obsessed with graphics, because I don't want them now, but I don't want them 4 years from now, I would like them no more than 3 years from now. this is just a point I've been thinking of. I'm not losing sleep over it, and I ALWAYS appreciate games, no matter what, my favorite game to this day is FF7 and I loved that game WAAAAY before it was ever popular. it was just awesome, a 10 in my book. And I love megaman and sonic. Although I've never really been a fan of mario I still played it. I even love the freakin kirby games, and FF:Mystic quest I love that stuff.

EDIT: oh and I got to a 47 in Halo 2 without mods so what now?!? lol j/k
