VGchartz - Really :?
On topic - I'm guessing those are the shipped figures. Sony is probably in the mid 30's.
To answer another poster, Xbox uses Sold to retailer numbers, shipped. They always will use Ship Numbers, Sony used to but changed that a few years back. It's argued back and forth, in the end, it doesn't matter. Let Xbox put up whatever numbers they want.
That's okay, in the end, who cares?
-----------
360 is at 39 million, that's good.
-----------
Also, TC, they didn't announce they were headed to 40 million, they announced they were at 39. So your thread's title is not true regarding what they announced, however, it's obvious to anyone that they aren't going to stop at 39, but there was no need to make a false statement about their XBox announcements.
They did not announce the 360 is headed to 40 million, please rephrase that false reporting.
Here is the link :
"Looks like Microsoft CES script got online before the conference started and Microsoft Reveals the newest xbox 360 sales numbers!"
"There are now over 39 million Xbox 360 consoles around the world" (see, they are careful, they say "around the world" )
The important part is what they announced, they didn't announced a heading in that link. So, this thread is incorrect.
All these companies ...all of them....use shipped numbers. It would be a real pain to get every little tiny and big electronics shop to send in their own personal number of units sold off of their own shelves to tally up to get an actual sold number. Just think about it really. Anyone claiming that one company or the other does actual sold numbers is either really misinformed or is a pathalogical liar on the internet!

is it shipped or sold? im not sure. :?

Let's say they are shipped. So whats the problem? I never understood why some people feel its necessary to make the distinction when it really doesn't matter.
Shipped units can simply sit in store never being bought up. Sold means consumers have them. I like to use MH3 as an example. It shipped 1.1 million units and has sold 960k. there are literally 1000s of units sitting in stores that cannot be sold off. The game will not get a second shipment. I apply the same logic to consoles though not as extreme. Also, its just more realistic to compare sold with sold and shipped with shipped.

pretty much what ActicEdge says. and i didnt say 39M for shipped or sold are bad numbers. :)
Because Microsoft would certainly risk an anti trust lawsuit in order for them to be able to claim that the Xbox 360 has shipped more than it actually has. And I must add the obligatory "lol VGChartz" response to my post while I'm at it.Those numbers are wrong.

But it doesn't matter if it's shipped or sold. Whether it's sitting in a retailer's store or in some guy's house. Microsoft wins. I don't understand why you guys feel its necessary to separate sold to retailer or consumer when the reality. If MS told their investors that they shipped 1000 units but only sold 800K, its good news. If MS told their investors, they shipped 1200 units but only sold 700k, thats even better news. As long as theres a high demand, there's no issue.
But why is there a need to make a distinction? If anything this affects retailers more than it does the 1st party manufactures and the consumers.
ms must have not done as well during the holidays compared to ninty and sony since they didnt go that same approach and announce what they sold. still have to wait for npds to confirm my theory but that is still my take. xbox360isgr8tyeah same was said last month when sony gloated blackfriday sales. then npd numbers come out with 360 beating ps3

That can sometimes be true but when something is continually being shipped, its a good indication that they are not mounting up on store-shelves (unless they are big stores :P). So in this case, while the 360/PS3/Wii continue to sell..shipped numbers are good :D

While they 'continue' to ship consoles it implies their is a demand from them from retailers...shipped/sold...its a null point.

With the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii as popular as they are, shipped numbers are as accurate as you can get. I doubt 2 weeks from now, too many consoles will be just "sitting" on store shelves.
How many of these "shipped" numbers are faulty X360's that have been changed out by the consumer??? I guess it's good to have faulty hardware when it comes to these numbers.

Those are the newest XBOX360 sales numbers..............over 39 million XBOX360 consoles. How many of these "shipped" numbers are faulty X360's that have been changed out by the consumer???Martin_G_NNot many. If it were a significant number, it would affect the 360's attach rate.
Why do people even post VG Charts any more? Those numbers are wrong.

If you are taking a snipe at VG Charts I tip my hat.
Still, when will the day come when VG Chart banter is un-mod-friendly as on NeoGaf.
That would clear things up, especially misinformation rather quickly.

If it were a significant number, it would affect the 360's attach rate.20 million people is on LIVE, that is'nt exactly a huge number considering the online part is the X360's strongest side. So I would assume that out of the first 10 million consoles or so sold, the RROD number is quite high. Most of my friends that have X360's have gone through at least 2 X360's each, and one is on his 4th.

Live's numbers do not mean much. For examble, PSN has like 40M members, and there are 50 PSP and 35 PS3 sold.
Your anecdotal evidence does not mean much, either, so I'll repeat myself, if those numbers were inflated, the 360 attach rate would not possibly be as big as it is.

Indeed! When my 360 E-74'ed MS didn't just replace my 360, but also sent me new copies of all my games, and even games I didn't previously own :o
VG should be close as they are using sold numbers and not shipped.killzowned24VG does not use sold numbers, they use estimates, which is different.
Besides, the difference between shipped and sold is a meaningless one, since retailers keep getting shippments, meaning all the previously shipped consoles are sold.
You "feel" MS would something as dangerous as that based on...?I'm really starting to feel that MS isn't giving us the real numbers.

yeah, but the estimates are for sold. It does make a difference because they could have just shipped out 2 million. Last August they said they sold 31 mils 360s and now after 5 months it increased to 39 mils 8 mils in 5 months seems unreasonable.

I'm assuming the 39 million is a shipped figure rather than sold, as Ballmer's statement seemed quite carefully worded and purposefully ambiguous i.e. 39 million "around the world."Please Log In to post.
