I'm really starting to feel that MS isn't giving us the real numbers.

Kashiwaba

You "feel" MS would something as dangerous as that based on...?

Last August they said they sold 31 mils 360s and now after 5 months it increased to 39 mils 8 mils in 5 months seems unreasonable.

If I'm not wrong, they reported 30.2M sold in March, not August.

Hmm i wonder if MS can reach 50 million by the end of this gen. That would be double what they sold last gen, very impressive.

Well this is what I found in Wiki:

On May 28, 2009, Microsoft announced that sales have surpassed the 30-million unit-mark

I was wrong it was on May not August but still 9 mils in 7 months still hard to believe.

And I'm not wrong.

Apr. 29, 2009

"The company announced it has shipped 30.2 million Xbox 360 systems worldwide since the console launched back in 2005."

Report for the quarter ending March 31, 2009.

is it shipped or sold? im not sure. :?

ActicEdge

Let's say they are shipped. So whats the problem? I never understood why some people feel its necessary to make the distinction when it really doesn't matter.

Shipped units can simply sit in store never being bought up. Sold means consumers have them. I like to use MH3 as an example. It shipped 1.1 million units and has sold 960k. there are literally 1000s of units sitting in stores that cannot be sold off. The game will not get a second shipment. I apply the same logic to consoles though not as extreme. Also, its just more realistic to compare sold with sold and shipped with shipped.

Consoles are in constant demand, games on the other hand are unpredictable, GTAIV for example had a huge opening and yet its sales didnt hold up anywhere near as the previous games. Even then, if MS overstuff the supply, chances are well see the effect next quarter when theyll have to ship less.

34 million in late October, which I believe is the latest reported numbers before CES.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6237794.html

So that would imply a 5 million increase in the last two months of the year.

Those are of course the biggest shopping months, though.

Btw, if there was a chance that they are reporting false numbers, a lot of people that know a A LOT more about this than us would have sued them already. Let's not overstimate ourselves.

Last August they said they sold 31 mils 360s and now after 5 months it increased to 39 mils 8 mils in 5 months seems unreasonable.

I'm assuming the 39 million is a shipped figure rather than sold, as Ballmer's statement seemed quite carefully worded and purposefully ambiguous i.e. 39 million "around the world."

I'm about tired of this shipped vs sold crap. No company knows when their products are sold to customers, they can only tell when they are sold to retailers. Every console company uses the same metric, so stop worrying about shipped vs sold. Its really aggravating.

I know in terms of quarterly fiscal statements etc. the metric is always shipped, but you don't think any of these companies are ever capable of using any internal or external tracking to estimate sold-through figures for their products?

For example: Nintendo indicates their 3 million Wiis figure for the US is a sold through figure here and Sony's recent press release indicates their worldwide figure is for retail sold through.

How many of these "shipped" numbers are faulty X360's that have been changed out by the consumer??? I guess it's good to have faulty hardware when it comes to these numbers.

after reading about and researching about the sales of these consoles, i really believe that Sony and MS are closer than people think, i think within 3 to 4 million. there are to many variables to really nail down who has sold what, these numbers for all these consoles are just ballpark in my book. but enjoy your sales thread.

Some of you dont have an idea how this works...now let me explain.Shipped=Sold to Microsoft. Why?Well it works like this...retailers buy xbox 360 consoles from microsoft if they think there is demand for it...microsoft sales them consloles then retaliers sell it to us...Those shipped units WILL be sold to costumers, its how it works...and no,Sony does not count sold to costumers units because it is impossible.

All these companies ...all of them....use shipped numbers. It would be a real pain to get every little tiny and big electronics shop to send in their own personal number of units sold off of their own shelves to tally up to get an actual sold number. Just think about it really. Anyone claiming that one company or the other does actual sold numbers is either really misinformed or is a pathalogical liar on the internet!

vaderhater

*sigh*

The issue is that there are two seperate types of shipped numbers. The shipping of consoles that were manufactured to regional storage...and the consoles that are shipped from regional storage to retailers. These have ALWAYS been considered shipped and sold, respectively, because consoles that are shipped from regional distribution are considered SOLD by the companies.

So any time console companies say the number of consoles SOLD, they are referring to the number they have SOLD to retailers. That number is as accurate as anyone can get as most retailers order new stock on a weekly to monthly basis. That means that if they over order one week/month, they will order less the next and all sales will balance out.

Well, to be fair, they learned that excuse from the lemmings last gen. You may recall "PS2 numbers are highly inflated because of DRE." "Of course multiplats will sell more on PS2, there's more consoles!"

Obviously places aren't going to order more units if they are just sitting in the store. Thus shipped units are legit as they are going to store where units are selling.

Not many. If it were a significant number, it would affect the 360's attach rate.

20 million people is on LIVE, that is'nt exactly a huge number considering the online part is the X360's strongest side. So I would assume that out of the first 10 million consoles or so sold, the RROD number is quite high. Most of my friends that have X360's have gone through at least 2 X360's each, and one is on his 4th.

If a 360 was replaced under warranty, it does not count as sales. Period. The same for any other item replaced under warranty.

1- VGcharts sucks (it's written with a Z).

2- Having established that they suck bear in mind that M$ numbers are sold to retailers, VCchartzzzz is to customers.

3- They may not have update to the holiday yet.

4- 10% isn't that bad considering that they are doing guesestimates.

5- They still suck.

How about secret option number 3: lol sales, do we suddenly have shares in MS and Sony? Just because X game didnt sell well dosent mean its a poor game. Once again bringing up the old MW2 and Halo 3 argument. Mediocre games, INCREDIBLE sales.

Basically around 5-6 million ahead. Also, those wondering about repair 360's those aren't counted by MS because they're never sold to retailers. Repair 360's are seperate and they buy back refurbished consoles from stores (I believe for the latter).

[QUOTE="moose_knuckler"]To you and everyone else wondering, this is shipped not sold to consumersIronBass
It's not like there's a major difference between both. Not big enough to justify a 3 millions mistake, that's for sure.

Yes it's makes some people feel better , they like to think there's 3 million 360's sitting on shelves.

Yeah, the fact that he said "around the world" tipped me off.

They all use shipped numbers though, as they can only track the amount of consoles they've shipped (i.e sold) to retailers.
