The death of a monopoly.

"Dell announced that it would be offering Windows XP again for Home PC's. The second that Vista came out, Microsoft makes it very hard for you to sell anything other than Me II. It can't do this on the business side because it would be laughed out the door, but for the walking sheep **** well, you take what you are shovelled."

"This is ****c abusive monopoly behavior, Microsoft wrote the modern book on it. It pulled all the major OEMs in by twisting their arms with the usual methods, and they again all fell into line. Never before has anyone backpedalled on this, to do so would earn you the wrath of Microsoft."

"The other equally monumental Me II failure? Gates in China launching a $3version of bundled ME II. Why is this not altruism? Well, it goes back to piracy and how it helped enforce the MS monopoly. If you can easily pirate Windows, Linux has no price advantage, they both cost zero." link  http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39087

... ok, I still find tons of people wanting to upgrade to Vista. I just did couple upgrades for my friends earlier this month. I would like to see M$ monopoly topple, but it isn't going to happen within these 5 years. gnutux

Linux is actually a very viable adversary. It's growth surpasses both Windows and Mac for the past year or 2. gnutux

I have Vista on the new PC I built and it is much better then XP. I had so many problems with XP. I would play music, and my whole system would crash to a blue screen of death. This made me lose everything I had saved, and I had to do a system recovery.

It's easy to grow the most when you had the smallest userbase. Even with the rapid growth, the amout of

Linux users is still a tiny fraction of even Mac users.

That's true, Dell has also issued a statement saying that they are planning to release Linux desktops too, I wonder how that would turn out. gnutux

Nah, I would start up a song in media player, and the PC would completely lock up, and 10 seconds later I would get the blue screen of death.

So none of it's true?

The facts are probably true, but they've been spun to be as anti-vole (vole meaning Microsoft) as possible. Read up on some of Charlie's previous articles and you'll see what I mean. He's mad that Microsoft doesn't cater to his incredibly specific demands (he seems to swap out components 25 times a day or more)

Awww yeaaa mannnn. The Operating System Wars are ONNNNN!!!!!

Wooo. Taking all bets here. Who's ya pony?

In seriousness, that kinda sucks that Vista is forced onto you, but Microsoft is still supporting Windows all the way back to 98, so you can't say they bail on past programs (they just like to push forward, and of course make more money, but what company doesn't want to?).

Windows is going nowhere, he basis his facts from Dell and China, no one buys software in China so whats the point of even referencing, MS is now making $3, compared to their previuos $0, people are still using pirated Vista like crazy though. THe Dell point is ridiculuos as Dell always is trying to build the cheapest PCs possible so no surprise. MS has a huge Monopoly on OS, if it wasnt illegal they would have 99.5% market share however governments everly restrics MS bundling of software. Not saying MS is teh best but they do know how to kick in the door and kick out competition, just look at the games industry, Ms succesfully took on the most succesful system ever and still managed 24 million, and is doing great with the 360. They are nowhere near monopolizing gaming and maybe they never will but their break into gaming was an achievement in itself.

Are you seriously that naive? Mac OSX is a fine, well-designed, and user-friendly operating system. It's, IMO, a worthy competitor to Windows.  Mac OSX is nice... but the company that makes it? The same company that makes the Ipod and negotiated the service deal for the Iphone? Aye, there's the rub!

You think Microsoft is a bully? Get a load of Apple's business practices! They operate a closed standard. Everything on their OS is regulated with an iron fist. They keep a stranglehold on their hardware and drivers. They censor their OS problems. They browbeat companies into doing what they want, just like MS. The current service provider for the Iphone is the only one that would listen, the rest walked away at Apple's ridiculous demands. Apple's press conferences are akin to a 30 minute's hate against Microsoft. Their OS, despite all claims to the contrary, seizes RAM like mad and is 15% less efficient, but they'll never tell you that nor adress that.

When either Apple or Linux get near 20% of the entire desktop market share, then we can start talking about taking out MS, until then, this is all just a pipe dream.

While your passion is true, your facts are not. Vista is a chrome-plated turd, and Linux isn't going to become mainstream anytime soon. I'm not saying it's going to happen overnight, but you'd be amazed how thigns are changing- especially overseas.

And people said the same thing about XP. Vista will be the new XP in a few years.

nah vista is just Windows ME. the true OS will be windows that they are working on right now. i forgot the name, maybe somone on this forum can list the name.

but just like windows me, vista is following the same path. just a os that MS can milk until their next os that they are releasing in the next year or 2. same thing happend with XP. :)

Look at the reviews. The only real positive ones come from the bloggers who got free laptops from M$ with Vista loaded.

Seriously, look. There are multitudes of reviews that are negative, including here at CNET.

Vista is ridiculous.

You know it.musicalmac

I hope so!;)

Microsoft presents the dirty sides of capitalism. Apple is... Orwellian.

While your passion is true, your facts are not. Vista is a chrome-plated turd, and Linux isn't going to become mainstream anytime soon. I'm not saying it's going to happen overnight, but you'd be amazed how thigns are changing- especially overseas.

What makes Vista so bad? I find it to be a damned fine OS.... No real need to upgrade from XP at this time, but if you are getting a new PC, Vista is the way to go.

Look at the reviews. The only real positive ones come from the bloggers who got free laptops from M$ with Vista loaded.

Seriously, look. There are multitudes of reviews that are negative, including here at CNET.

Vista is ridiculous.

I have read the reviews, and done one better, actually used the OS!!!! I know, I know, it is a shocker, but I find coming to your own opinion much more accurate than relying solely on reviews. The reviews I have said echo what i stated. No real reason to upgrade from XP, but if you are getting a new PC, then go with Vista.

As soon as it's worth it for computer wizards to screw with another OS besides Windows, it will be just as bad for them as well.

Windows isn't nearly as bad as most of the loud-mouths make it out to be, and osx and linux are not nearly as good as they are made out to be.  An OS is an OS.

First of all Microsoft isn't going anywhere even if Dell starts to backtrack to XP and sell Linux based PCs. Fact of the matter is Microsoft will continue to make money no matter which version of their operating system is sold and Linux isn't going to replace Windows either. Secondly Apple is an awful operating system in my opinion; if I had to choose between Linux and Mac I would choose Linux. Apple is nothing more than a Unix based OS with a fancy window manager, if your after the bells and whistles of Mac OS then switch to Linux and download beryl, not only you can get better looking effects, you don't have to pay $2000 for hardware which limits your ability to upgrade with ease or be limited in software.
All I ever hear from people who want to sound intelligent but know nothing about computers is Macs are good for multimedia, graphic design and sound. What exactly makes them better for these tasks comparing to Windows and Linux? All of these tasks can be achieved on PCs with the same efficiency if not higher.
