I just read this.

Wow, the cheeky , cheeky B*******.

''Yes, we support PC users playing around with our 360 accessory, but we are going to sell them for a s*** load more.''

Do they honestly believe people will pay $100 more for the same thing, with some software?

Yes, I saw that, and I saw the price.

Kinect manufacturing costs have gone way down, but I suppose this is a last ditch effort before Kinect 2 rolls out.

I think the 360 Kinect uses a proprietary connector.

I've never used one so I don't know but I assumed it was just USB, if that's what you're meaning by connector :P

This. Can't believe Microsoft would do such a thing. Same device, $100 more on PC? It is the same device, right?

N30F3N1X

Exactly. And so far I haven't seen any compelling uses for Kinect with games, but I can think of a **** load of reasons that I would use Kinect with a PC. If someone would develop some good Kinect plugins for digital sculpting programs like Zbrush, Sculptris, or Mudbox I would gladly pay what MS is asking. And that's just one of my personal wishes, but I'm sure there are countless uses for Kinect outside of gaming.

Again, it's probably not intended for gamers as Microsoft has not put any effort in advertising it coming out for PC.

Dat extra 100$ in the price is probably because of special warranties and support for people who use Kinect professionally.

If I recall correctly I also read some medics were using it as a special camera during surgery.

It is the same device. The difference is accounted for with... ''the kit comes with software development tools that aid in creating programs for the device''

The article does say its aimed at companies, but its still a hell of an increase for additional software, when people have been giving it away online. They said they supported PC user playing with it, and then throw an extra hundred dollars for them to do so officially. That is harsh imho

While it will surely have its uses for people outside of gaming, this is a big slap to the face of PC gamers.

"Software" is generic. "Giving it away online" is referred to drivers, this may be a whole SDK. They are completely different things.

Doesnt it come with Dev tools? Im sure the fee for Dev tools in included in that, so it kinda makes sense. Still too high though, but then again XNA fee is 100 bucks also, maybe thats included?

I understand that they're mainly for developers, but I hope that the 360 version will work with PC's by the time PC Kinect software comes out. There is no way in hell that I would buy another kinect for my PC, unless it's a version that works alot better. The 360 kinect doesn't work that well from my experience. Well, not for football anyway, but that's the only game that I wanted to play..

For SDK that's available free elsewhere, typical greedy MS not in tune with gamers or budding developers.

nah, some guy already hacked it to use on the PC, MS congratulated the guy, probably saved them a shed load of work on drivers for the PC version, any way, i heard you could do more with the PC version and it had upgraded tech, still doesn't justify the massive hike in price though.

Just like how Nvidia charges a good deal more for workstation cards than they do for gaming cards. They know this stuff is pocket change to big companies and they also know that these devices will pay for themselves almost instantly.

I'm not directing this next comment towards you, but... SW users are really showing their age in this topic.

unless a new chip is inside, I don't understand why they're charging this much for practically the same hardware (that could be already overpriced on the X360).

Workstation cards are built differently and do a different job. This Kinect is essentially the same as the one from the Xbox 360. That would be like selling a GTX 580 for PC at 499USD and then selling the same GTX 580 for workstations at 699USD. I can find a somewhat similar example that is true though. Just look at the price of an Apple version of the same GPU.

lol why does MS think that the PC gaming community cares about this? They don't even care about MS, rememebr GFWL? Ya guess what there is a reason it's free now lol. Some peopl might pay for it though, you don't think people will TC but people also said that about Xbox Live fees and COD map packs, and guess what? People still pay for them! Some people are more intelligent and understand the value of money better than others it seems, so luckily I don't see this getting too much success on PC...

Pretty sure there's already user made applications that do all of that.
