No that's just abusive. There's absolutely no reason you should be able to patent an abstract idea like that. That's about as stupid as patenting power buttons.[QUOTE="chikenfriedrice"][QUOTE="doobie1975"]http://www.google.com/patents?id=ky2hAAAAEBAJ&dq=gaming+invites

It is brilliant and stupid. Its stupid that the patenting office allows this type of abusive monopolistic patenting, and its brilliant on MS's part for exploiting it :D
LOL patent it how the hell do you patent that?Nolan16
well in US they amanged to patent some bacteria right? so this is not shocking at all.lol.

lol, i guess Michael Crichton was onto sumthing in his book NEXT :P...better get your cells patented before sumone else does it!
First in game music and now this? sounds like the PS3 and 360 online experiences will continue to be very much different from each other.:) So much for all the guys saying the psn will be equal or even exceed the live online.vaderhaterNo Sony can still have these features at the expense of paying some kind of Royalties to MS.

cant you challenge Patents and say they are just to general and broad? Im sure there is a way to get a patent reviewed...or am i wrong ?
Well i would rather be the company who owns the blue raychad-wardenIf I had to choose to be the owner of either, I'm sure my pockets would be fatter owning MS.
Why are you guys bringing up these patents thinking that this is new? Look at the dates those patents were issued.. 2006 and 2007... Last time I checked we were halfway into 2008?mastarifla
it's being brought up now because questions are being asked as to why the delay for the ps3 update.
E3 is coming up soon right? I think icrosoft knows that this patent won't stick. But there doing this to cause some trouble, just in case sony announces a big netowrk update with all this stuff in it. Maybe there trying to stop them from announcing it? no idea.4sealWell I would agree with you if those M$ patents were written just a weeks ago... but they have had these patents at least written since 2004...

this was already made official nearly 3 years ago.

Do I really need to?
if a company created a patent to prevent another from doing something years after the fact..yes..you would really need to explain to me how this move makes microsoft stupid. since when was it stupid to think ahead?
Guys stop acting so ignorant.
There are a million and one ways to get someone playing a game into a gaming session of another.
Microsoft patented one.
Other companies will find other ways.
So who here even bothered to read the actual patent?
Anyone? Anyone? I didn't think so.
Or did you just read the paragraph-long executive summary?
There's technology and methodologies outlined in the actual patent. Sony can have cross game invites as long as they don't use the same technology or methods to do so.
Reading isn't that hard. You do it here on the forums already.

That's about as stupid as patenting power buttons. While you have a point that it *should not* be allowed. Companies are getting patents for all kinds of ideas. Judges dont' know so they just so OK. Then the company sues to enforce it. It may not hurt sony as they have $$$ to fight microsoft in court. If I did it though I'd be screwed.

I don't see what's so silly about that. A company created a new strain of bacteria with industrial uses and patented the resulting strain. Different species of genetically altered plants and animals are patented all the time and world wide. Genetics is a booming industry.

It would have to. Patents need to be unique and non-obvious, so something that generic would never fly - or at least hold up in court.
