Holy hell, a patent for this AND the custom soundtrack function?Verge_6
and people said microsoft never plan ahead.
hell i bet they're getting new ideas for the next xbox locked down as we speak
This topic is locked from further discussion.
So who here even bothered to read the actual patent?
Anyone? Anyone? I didn't think so.
Or did you just read the paragraph-long executive summary?
There's technology and methodologies outlined in the actual patent. Sony can have cross game invites as long as they don't use the same technology or methods to do so.
Reading isn't that hard. You do it here on the forums already.

Doy. Patents are for particular ideas/objects. You can't just place a patent on something so...general and broad.

It would have to. Patents need to be unique and non-obvious, so something that generic would never fly - or at least hold up in cow court.
[QUOTE="vaderhater"][QUOTE="HAZE-Unit"]Or is it?:shock:WTF? This is so silly

Or is it not?
Seriously though, I don't see what harm or what the point of this?
It is like patenting forwarding or rewinding in remotecontrols.
Not in the slightest bit. MS spent time, money, resources and man power to design these features. All Sony really has to do is pay them and boom thing is settled.
[QUOTE="Blackbond"][QUOTE="True-Legend86"] Silly Microsoft, such a bunch of greedy *******.virtuas

well mr gates didnt pay mr job when he stole his idea
Mr. Gates is smarter then the average bear obviously.

Yeah, damn them for securing one of the best parts of live!!!
DAMN THEM!!!!
I honestly have to say that this has been the most twitch-inducing day of SW that I've ever experienced. Anyone who has taken even a basic course in business has shed tears today.Verge_6
I find these discussions entertaining myself. The ones that touch on economics are even better.

I think everyone knows that, I've seen the documentary. Problem is MS ain't taking a nap on this one.

It just don't seem plausible, I mean look at something like the Wii-mote ( I still think it is a gimmick ), now that is something to get a patent for and Nintendo didn't.
In concept both ideas ( In-game friend invite and custom soundtracks ) seems something easy to think about and make, as for resources and money and all of what are you saying, I don't think it took them alot of it, even if it did, it seems silly for getting a patent for.
Keeping such a thing exclusive is just like keeping controllers exclusive to nintendo and games to Atari.
Mercedes benz invented the air-bag and they didn't keep it for themselves, I know it is for safety but the concept is somehow the same, both invented something new for the industry and both ideas deserve to be shared.

Yeah! Xbox Live shouldn't have any real competition! It's competition should be stifled by silly software patents. You know Sony could always think of their own ideas or their own way of doing things or just pay Microsoft :|

Don't click your mouse pointer three times in a row... Microsoft owns the patent on the triple click. No joke.AmyMizunoYou know it's really bad when I can barely see that that is sarcasm/a joke...
The good news is these type of software patents are coming to an end. We're going to have to do a lot of rethinking about IP, copyright, and patents.AmyMizuno
Where do you come up with this stuff? Patents and copyrights are becoming even more strict than in the past, as are the laws to protect patents. You act like they're all going away because MS has patents.
[QUOTE="Great_Ragnarok"][QUOTE="Nolan16"]LOL patent it how the hell do you patent that?II_Seraphim_II
well in US they amanged to patent some bacteria right? so this is not shocking at all.lol.
lol, i guess Michael Crichton was onto sumthing in his book NEXT :P...better get your cells patented before sumone else does it!
Well, looks like I have to say it YET again.
MS is NOT patenting the goddamn soundtrack/friends list mechnics themselves, but the METHODS under which they operate, nothing more. They would be stupid NOT to patent this specific aspect. You CANNOT patent something so broad as soundtrack/friends lists mechanics. Is there ANYONE out there who STILL does not get it?
I'm honestly about to start crying in my advanced business course textbook...

They actually own the patent on double-clicks under certain situations, but patent experts claim that it would never hold up in court.

This is common place. If you create a genetically altered strain of something, you own the patent to the resulting organism. This has been going on for years, and if you go to a landscaping store, many of the plants sold there will have patents on them. There is even a company that has a patent on a new strain of pigs with skin that glows in the dark.

BlackBond is not over the 5 limit quote chain.
Not to mention B^2 has moderation immunity here.

You can quote 5 people then post. That's still 5 quotes. Unless I'm going blind. Been a real long day lol.

That's true... However it would give M$ the grounds to sue Sony if they implement the idea on PSN. Now if they win or not is another matter entirely.

Just like I said in my other post.... no one here really read the patent. They just saw the title, maybe read the executive summary and think they know everything they need to know about the subject.
Sorry folks. You'll have to read the thing.... 4 pages.... it's not rocket science.... to know that they are patenting their technology and methodology... NOT the concept.
I fear for trhe future of the world if the kids here won't even be bothered to know what they're talking about. The link's in the first post. It's right there. No searching necessary. All you need to do is read the thing. Are you people really that lazy?

I can file a suit against microsoft for delisting Pluto as planet. Anyone can file whatever nonsense. I don't think that's the point here.
