I'm a big 360 fan, and I own all the consoles. But 360 sales are a kinda sluggish, and unfortunately, it's MS's fault.

They've done just about everything right. Having the best console online community, having a lot of awesome games, snatching up exclusive deals and content whenever they can. But there is one thing they're totally dropping the ball on:

The consoles reliablility. Yeah, everyone knows that, but there are a couple of things they could have done differently. I know and see a LOT of people that are on the fence about buying a 360, but they're hesetent because of the constant upgrades the console get, along with the horrible reliablity of the hardware.

Okay, the three year warranty extension is great. But it's still not fixing the problem. Here's what I think. They shouldn't have dropped the price of the 360. It didn't cause a huge surge of console sales anyways. Obviously they're missing out on a decent amount of cash when people purchase the 360 with the new pricedrop. But if they didn't drop the price, they could have used that cash for extra R&D to get those smaller more efficient CPUs out there QUICK. I'm sure they need to change some other hardware to make sure there are no other problems, but the sooner they do that, the sooner those people on the fence will lay down the cash to buy one. And anyone that sends in their 360 for repair with the new 3 year warranty will get one of the new consoles that won't have the reliability issue, instead of getting a replacement, but still having the shoddy hardware that's likely to fail again.

Thoughts? I think my opinion is a wise idea, so why can't the head honchos at MS realize this?

i dont think the $50 price cut would have prevented them from fixing the 360 problems any sooner besides the heatsinks and heat distribution in the new hdmi premium 360s should solve that problem....http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/10/spot-the-hdmi-enabled-xbox-360-premium-at-retail/

it just takes a little while for those chips to get into the 360s i am pretty sure they are working as hard as possible, anyway the link proves that they are trying to solve the problem and already have an added heatsink in the new premium 360s

By "people", do you mean me? I'm not hating on the 360, I love it, I'm just pointing out an obvious issue, and what I beleive could have been a different approach to fix that issue.

You think MS thinks about using the money they earn? They used 2 billion dollars making the Xbox (1) while sony and nintendo used 500 million...

MS is losing money, for some reason (On x360 at least)... and they dropped the price to fix it, what logic is it in that?

I don't really understand the point you're trying to make....

But I don't think they they "dropped the price to fix it". If anything, they SHOULDN'T have dropped the price, and used more cash to fix it NOW,

I'd rather buy a fully reliable 360 at full price than a defective 360 at reduced price.  Who wouldn't?  So yeah, I agree with you

How exactly does dropping the price fix the design flaws with the 360? It doesn't. What MS really needs to do, (but won't), is a recall/redesign. But beyond that, titles like Bioshock & Halo3 will sell systems regardless of it's crappy reliability.

I never said dropping the price will fix the console. I said they shouldn't have dropped the price, and INSTEAD used the extra money to actually fix the problemwith the consoles that is causing hardware failures.

they did a mistake and now they are paying for it. They had a chance to make a good name out of their brand this generation with the almost too good to be true X360 well balanced features, but they blew it.

Sony on the other hand did so many mistakes with the PS3, but the brand name is helping them overcome that.

Even with the new chip, how is that going to bring in the casual market? That's how sales rises.

They dropped the price because they were already making a profit on every XBox 360 sold. They were making about $77 on XBox 360 premiums. So dropping the price $50 wasn't a bad idea to compensate for the PS3 price drop and to get close to the Wii price point. Microsoft has already been working on correcting the 3 Ring issue before they even announced the 3yr warranty. By this time next year, the 3 Ring issue will be a thing of the past and the price on the 360 will probably get dropped to $300. There will be no reason not to get an XBox 360 then.

Does the mass market actually know about the issue's like we do though?

I went into Gamestation asking about their deals on used 360's, inquiring about their return policy because of the reliability and all three of them looked at me as if I was high. At least they offer a year's guarantee anyway.

casuals think the PS3 is:

a) expensive because it's more powerful

b) has better and more games.

c) and now they have the impression the competition is unreliable.

what more can you ask for? another price drop and you might have the ps3 outselling X360 2:1 month in month out

Who says their not fixing the problem.

They are adding additional heat sinks. And securing the motherboard better.

It doesn't NEED a new chip.

But that along with the a new chip and the other 2 things I mention will make it all but fool proof.

What I think is hurting sales is the 3 or 4 sku crap.

They need to have a 100 GB HDD model with HDMI and wireless control for 359 usd. And thats it!

Stop freaking confusing people MS. Jeez

So then you can increase your base get more games and sale more consoles.

But MS game division is run by some idiots or something.

I could do 100 percent better.

better and more games? that doesn't make any sense. a casual walks into best buy and sees 5 shelves completely full of 360 games, they go by playstation 3 and there's 4 shelves completely stretched out of the same games. games is certainly not a reason for casuals and the console sales show that clearly. this will likely be the first month that the PS3 will surpass the 360 becaue of it's price drop convinced some to finally shell out the money and buy it, next month it's going to be the 360 taking the lead all over again and it'll continue to outsell the PS3 the rest of the holiday season.

M$ is helping to sell a lot of PS3's because of the failure rates M$ is facing.

Thats kind of unfortunate M$ is doing so bad...considering all the amazing games and online, the hardware(even if its not reliable. I think the real reason is Japan.

When the problems are fixed, then people will shut up.

I don't see how new chips will fix the disc scratching problem.

I just think personally that everyone has too really stop talking about the 360's reliability because it is getting old and annoying. Please just stop talking about it. We are really beating a dead horse here.
