From my point of view MS has not been owned that's just a fanboys opinion! This is just business Sony needs Microsoft just as much as MS needs Sony, let me elaborate, without MS support Sony can't sell Blueray drives for PCs because guess what Windows is the most operating system used in the world, and if MS denies to help Sony there is no chance in hell for these drives to be install on a Windows base computer, so what will Sony have left?? try to convince everybody in the world to change from Windows to Linux or to other operating system??? yeah right, like that's ever going to happen. They'll have to negotiate with MS in order for their drives to run on Windows computers.

MS needs Sony too, because if BR is the final winner people eventually will leave their trusty dvds and start the new digital era, so they will demand that their new computer has a BR player or they will not buy it, they will stick with the old one and just updated.

So you see, it's not about who has been owned or what it's all about the money and both companies need each other to make more money! period!

As expected. They need to keep with the HD format. Unfortunately that is Sony's format.

For movies. Digital Distribution is the future.

The question is how far into the future? Right now, many still don't have DSL, let alone cable or fiberoptics. Do you honestly think that people are going to just stop purchasing discs for movies? People continue to purchase cd's even though itunes has become so popular, and those are just 4-5 mbs. Then, when it comes to digital distribution, people want to be able to burn their movie to a disc which right now isn't possible through such services like live, apple tv, etc... Whether you like it or not, there is atleast one if not two more generations of hard media left before a true digital distribution as the definitive format of media delivery.

Alan

That is true, however digital distribution is catching on quicker than you think for gaming/computer applications at least. Steam on PC is proof of that. Steam also lets you make physical backups of everything as well. Honestly besides movies NOTHING requires Bluray technology. MGS4 as much as I love that series and all does NOT require that much space. They could have easily done the same game on DVD9 and NOONE would have been able to tell the difference. All I can say is that by the time fiber optic technology starts to take hold in areas where cable and dsl are now commonplace digital distro will be the common/standard way to get media content. There will be options for 1 time use, multiple use, and permanent use. I believe that physical store bought versions will still exist, but only for those who still do not have high speed internet capability. In developed countries the number of HSI users will increase like CRAZY in the next decade.

I find it funny that people on a gaming board are laughing at Microsoft for getting owned. Microsoft, one of the biggest companies in the world and you.... Do you really think that Microsoft or Sony care if you think they got owned for something like this?
