Anyone who bought The Last Remnant on Thursday will have noticed one blatantly obvious thing, it comes on two discs. Now, this might not be that concerning to too many people, but it could hint that this could be the way things will be done in the future.

As everyone is now aware, Final Fantasy XIII is being released on the Xbox 360, as part of Square Enix's new "let's make money" strategy. It's more than likely that Final Fantasy XIII will dwarf The Last Remnant in size, and if they couldn't compress that game down, it is likely that they will struggle for Final Fantasy XIII as well. The only thing that might discount this, is that The Last Remnant was developed using an external engine (Unreal 3), whereas Final Fantasy XIII is being developed using Square Enix's own Crystal Tools.

People joked a lot about the amount of discs Metal Gear Solid would need if it were ever released on the 360, and this might start up all over again now that people have seen The Last Remnant.

Concerning the Playstation 3, well The Last Remnant is said to be coming on one disc, and there is even talk of the Japanese voice work being included too; so it doesn't look like there are any storage issues there. This will probably hold true for Final Fantasy XIII, but the question is; how many discs will Final Fantasy XIII actually need on the 360? Your guess is as good as mine, but if they use similar compression on Final Fantasy XIII as they did on The Last Remnant, you're probably looking at 3-4.

Source

Damn, I am wandering will this affect the PS3 version of the game. Hopefully it will be better because of Blu Ray.

Its probable that the game will be on two discs.

But i wouldn't put much faith in his claim of 3 - 4 discs. The poster of that entry shows he has a poor understanding of compression.

Ok Mr. Compression, why is Lost Odyssey on 4 discs?

I hope it is a lot of disks because this will reassure me that they didn't butcher it to put it on the 360.

They'll be very similar but the PS3 version will be slightly 1% better and cows will claim ownage. At that SE event back in August, they said the 360 version would be multiple disc along with compressions. Either way FFXIII will push both PS3 and 360 to its limits. But PS3 version will be better by a 1% difference. I can't wait for FFXIII and VXIII Hopefully the PS3 Last Remnant won't be as bad as the 360 version. The game feels rushed. They should add on things and fix the problems doing their time to port.

Chances are I will be getting FFXIII for PS3 since it is the lead platform for the title and has been in the works on PS3 dev kits for a few years rather than being a quick port. Still though Im gonna wait for reviews before making my final call on which version to pick up.

As for multi discs, I dont really care tbh. Im sure it will be on multiple discs for 360, but to be honest that never bothered me. Im playing FF IX right now and its 4 discs. I wouldnt be surprised if FFXIII takes up 4 discs on the 360, but it wouldnt bother me if I had to play it like that.

So why is Lost Odyssey on 4(uses CGI) while The Last Remnant is on 2 (uses in game)?

lol I hope your joking dude. Using the game engine to render cutscenes in real time does NOT use more space. The ingame assets ie. character models, environments, items etc. are already there and just being animated into a scene. CGI cutscenes are pre rendered videos and take up a considerable amount of space especially in HD. Why do you think PS1 FFs used so many discs? Why do you think LO uses so many discs?

Pre rendered doesn't mean CGI. Pre rendered means just that, it's a pre rendered cinematic. But CGI takes more space. That's why FFVII was on 3 discs, FFVIII and FFIX were on 4. FF games always use a LOT of CGI and will probably be one 4 DVDs(360) and one Blu Ray(Ps3)

Well hey Im not exactly an expert on the matter, but as for the norm, in game uses far less space than pre rendered cgi. Maybe Epic has a different way of doing things, or maybe it just works better that way on the UE3.

Cool, now i can convince myself im getting more value for money:D On a serious note, i like the fact that in RPGs, you can say how far you are by disc, its something that anyone can easily understand instead of giving the name and the number of the visit.

No they did it for the sake of framerate and lack of texture pop-in The first CGI film is one in big scope showing off huge armies and different locales

I don't understand if this thread is supposed insult the 360 for needing a game to be on multiple discs, or if it's supposed to start a pointless arguement that has a solid answer that no one's bothering to look up in order to prove their point. Anyway, I really don't mind a game being on multiple discs. The 360 can run super-strong tenchincal games, arguably on the same level as the PS3. If they need to do it on multiple discs, so be it. It's better than cutting back on things in order to get the game to fit on a single one. I can appreciate the convenience of only needing one disc, but there's definetly a certain epicness to opening a box and seeing a few discs inside.

[QUOTE="Shattered007"][QUOTE="lawlessx"] ..which has nothing to do with the topic. besides im sure everybody here already knows this..square enix even said so.lawlessx

People that really don't care about the game and just need to feed their enter fanboy post things that was answerd to so they can claim onage. Y'know I just thought about this...what if FF13 is bad? SE has been hit or miss with this gen so far. I hope it's good.

if FF13 is fails cows will just switch gears and hope for versus to be a killer title

I'm expecting this regardless...

[QUOTE="xsubtownerx"]They can put it on 10 discs for all I care. Or 6 installs (PS3). point is, this game will rock regardless.CAlNlAC
I agree with this. FF13 should rock indeed. Unless its like FF12 though... I didn't like FF12.

I agree. IMO, FFX > Lost Odyssey > FFXII

This is SO TRUE. Square Enix's Credibility went down the toilet, I'll only belive them if they claim Exclusivity for Wii or 360 but never for Ps3, I've stated this many times before and I'll do it One more Time. All platforms this gen will get at least one exclusve from square enix except the Ps3.
