Multimedia Sony PlayStation 3 Sells Worse than Nintendo GameCube in the U.S.

Plagued by initial production issues, extremely high manufacturing costs and excessive retail price, PlayStation 3 from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is even less successful than heavily-criticized Nintendo GameCube. At least, in the first ten months of sales Nintendo GameCube was sold in larger quantities than Sony PS3.

According to data from NPD, based on the first ten months of availability, the troubled PlayStation 3 sold 22% less than the Nintendo GameCube for the same period, reports GamePro web-site. In the first ten months of availability about 2.12 million Nintendo GameCube were bought by end-users, whereas only 1.742 millionSony PlayStation 3 gaming machines were sold in from November '06 to September '07.

Nintendo GameCube was released in November 2001 and sold in 21.6million quantity worldwide,below sales of Microsoft Xbox, which reached 24 million,andfive times less compared to Sony PlayStation 2.

And the 360 sells worse than PS2 worldwide. So what?

I think that that is a red flag for american developers when it comes to exclusives.

Not with the drop in price for the 360 they will not....I say this even thought I will be buying the PS3 but I expect it to end up third this gen.

Why does that mater, I find it funny how people defend Sony with this. It's sonys own damn fault they lose vision, this is a gaming market.

They should of known in the first place, it is there own damn fault it's expensive, with little in the way of real games right now. They are paying for it, and im glad they are.

They need a kick in the teeth, because this console is no ps1/ps2.

The 360 is not competing against the PS2.

If you make the argument that the 360 is indeed in competition with that old machine, then you will have to admit that the PS3 is also competing with the PS2. If you do that you will have to acknowledge the fact that the PS3 is losing against both the 360 and the PS2 (and the Wii, to make matters even worse).

So what? Well, if things don't improve for Sony, the PS3 is in danger of being discontinued, silly Cow.

It alsotracking below the Gamecube in Japan. But it has some feet in Europe, the Gamecube was pretty much non-existant there.

no excuse? how about the fact it's the FIRST tricore processor on the market using the newly designed gpu that was first to market......

it's a console of firsts... some flaws will be found... fortunately ms is takinj ownership for them, unlike sony did last gen...

the ps2 is living in a dead generation... but if you want to hype it, let's hype cell phones too, since they play games... and cellphones waaaaay outnumber ps2..

you have no data for the 360's failure rate, yet state your opinions like facts...

Please stop using the price excuse. I don't care if the PS3 costs $6,000. It is Sony's fault that it costs what it costs. People point out that there will be more price drops, but the GCN had price drops too. It started out at $200, and by the time the Wii launched, it was only $80. That's a 60% price drop right there.

The PS3 is selling very poorly. I don't care if it's selling well "for a $600 system". It's still selling poorly. Third parties don't care if it's selling well "for a $600 system". It's not like they're able to sell their games for $150 instead of $50 just because the system is three times the cost.

Why are 360 fans so lucky. Because everyone worships Sony and will never look at other brands, even if those other brands are bringing a fresh approach to video-gaming, taking online seriously and getting many many developers to make the games they love on the new system.

Take your head out of the clouds mate. You really think all the casuals that bought a PS2 are holding on for a PS3 to come down in price and get good games. Casuals my friend are the LEAST loyal to brand name, a simple reality of commercialism! Why would they sit there and wait for the PS3 when there is a console that shows next gen graphics just as good and better graphics on many mulit-platforms games, has many good games not on the PS3, is considerably cheaper and is highly regarded when it comes to playing online. Casuals will see all the advertising, see its growing popularity and eventually jump in! lol
