Developing games for the PS3 is notoriously difficult. Unreal Tournament 3, a title which Sony paid big bucks to secure an earlier release over the 360 version, has been delayed due to development complications.[1]Furthermore, development difficulty often causes PS3 versions of multiplatform titles to be of inferior quality compared to Xbox 360 and PC versions (PS3 version of Vivendi Games's F.E.A.R. suffered from inferior graphics and stuttering frame rate while EA's Madden NFL'08 ran at 30 frames-per-seconds compared to Xbox 360's 60 fps).

It is important to note the same studio handled both the 360 and PS3 versions of F.E.A.R., so I do not think the quality difference is the result of studio incompetence.

These inferior versions affect sales (360 version of Madden sold 896,600 copies in compared to PS3's 336,200 first week sales). [2]

Based on this pattern, do you think PS3 versions of multiplatform titles will continue to be of inferior quality? How long will this pattern last? How many consumers are aware of differences between the versions?

This is a huge advantage for Microsoft to capitalize on. Is the only action Sony can counter with is to offer better customer service to third-party studios? It is certainly too late for them to change the PS3 architecture...

Well that's simple. COD4 is a great example of a multiplat gaming being just as equal in terms of a 360 and PS3 version. As far as sales go, it's pretty obvious that 360 has the most units out, therefor sales are better for that platform between the two. Developers are having a tough time with the PS3. That's where Sony is suppose to step in and help them out. Which we haven't seen too much or heard of at all.

If the ps3 is difficult to develop for and does not start selling better, than ps3 multiplats will probably continue to be inferior. I think I heard once that the ps2 was difficult to develop for (correct me if I'm wrong, I am not sure on this). However, the ps2 sold a lot and it was worth it to developers to put the time and effort into games for the system.

The ps3 is not selling well. If it is not worth it to the developer to put a lot of effort into making the ps3 versions of their games great, they won't do it. They will continue to make superior 360 versions due to higher sales and ease of development. Sony needs to give these companies incentive to make better multiplats for their system, and the best way to do that is a larger userbase.

Oblivion and Dirt look better on PS3. DMC4 is said to look slightly better on PS3 and is said to be among one of the best looking games on each platform. So I would say no it really depends on the dev.

Yeah Dirt is really better looking on the PS3. And it runs at 60 FPS.

LAZY DEVs....... what? lemmings can't have excuses?

i thought both consoles had different parts of the game that looked better. The trees looked better on the ps3 but the crowd of people in the background looked better on the 360 version, etc. This was still only one game though.
