@emgesp: What kind of film comparison is that? Apples and oranges man.

Why isn't that logic applied to games?

Why are mainstream games frowned upon when they constantly chart, yet you don't see people crying foul that Star Wars the Force Awakens has become the most successful Blockbuster in the US.

To flip that around on you, why are games, movies, music etc. considered great to you just because of sales?

It's not just America, it's world wide.

I'm not even sure what the f*ck the OP's point is. The top games list in America is going to look virtually the same as the top games list in the UK.

Hell, the only region in the world that might look vastly different is Japan, seeing as that they're interested in basically nothing but JRPG's and dancing games.

What most around here don't seem to understand is that the vast majority of people who play videogames are casuals. They don't sit around playing these things for 8 fucking hours a day like some around here. Like you (I think) said before, people have jobs and families. As they get older and settle down, they can't devote hours and hours to some mindless hobby.

So they like to jump into a quick game of Madden, a quick map of CoD, etc.

Never said they are great because of sales. I just made a point that just because those games charted doesn't mean people have bad tastes in gaming. None of those games could be classified as "objectively" bad.

What an unplayable list. But where's halo 5? Is the game forgotten in under 2 weeks like i've predicted? Yes it is.

MKX and Fallout 4 are the only good games on the top 10

All of those games are very accessible and they're not bad games by any stretch. We all have sticks up our asses because we've experienced better games, or have grown tired of some of those experiences, but to most people that stuff is a blast to play.

What these fine gentlemen said, it's not surprising that those games sold well. If anything at the least Fallout 4 going that strong in sales at least has to be promising regardless of how anyone feels about that game.

On topic: Halo's not dead, Halo is in that company that Nintendo's ips are. They are successful, and they make a lot of money, they still sell enough that other franchises that do "well" sales would kill to get the numbers those franchises have. But we are long past the time those franchises were megahits that drive console sales or take over mind share. Microsoft, and Nintendo need new franchises. There old ones are just that, old. Beyond that, multiplats are going to always have a huge advantage. Which is what all of those games had and all of them are sequels.

The charts look almost identical in the UK. Gamers have sh*t taste. More news at eleven.

What's so crappy about those games? Because a lot are annual installments of franchises that have been around for a long time?

Some of you guys sound like hipsters. "Mainstream games are so lame."

I enjoy some of those games myself, but year after year it's full of crap like Call of Duty, Fifa, Madden, Assassin's Creed etc.

How do you expect the game industry to grow properly and expand with nothing but annual franchises from the big three? For the most part, they are lame. They're shallow, casual, lack originality, and are tired and used up.

The one thing I do like Assassins Creed for though, is it's time periods and environmental settings. Gameplay is a wash, but it's playable. It's also one of the few franchises that explores different time periods of the world. It's the main reason I do still play the series.

Don't get me wrong, I played the crap out of Fallout 4, platinum'd the game, have a new savefile ready for when the DLC hits (of which I own the season pass), but the actual game is pretty lacking and the list is pretty meh-ish at best (but I was honestly shocked to see 2 CoD's there).

Halo right now isn't dead, I can agree to that. But it has been declining over the past entries. I still think that they'll manage to turn into a more universal IP (a true franchise, using the different types of media to it's fullest) but the game front is clearly going down. And that is something that should concern the Xbox division, after all, Xbox is Halo and vice-versa. It's the one game that defines the console (and has defined the entire Xbox legacy so far). It's not so much that 343i can't nail the gameplay as most fans seem to be very, very happy with the MP in Halo 5, it's more that they (and MS) are missing that spark that, for example, keeps franchise like Smash and MK (since you mentioned Nintendo) truly relevant, over the generations.

Also, now that we're past any pretense, seeing eye to eye and all that. I'll go ahead spill my top 2 for 2015. Would do a top 5, but my point would be redundant.

MGSV and Bloodborne. And two games like these have no business charting in a world where gaming has become so big.

Bloodborne - This game is the opposite of accessible. Not as hard as people make it out to be, but when compared to many modern games, it's brutal. It's uninviting. Even if you get good at the core combat, it's still much like the Souls games before it, in that so many things are intentionally vague. Beyond that, the Souls games have never been industry blockbusters, but at least they started to carve out a name which Bloodborne does not share. The only people who would go for Bloodborne are the fans that the Souls series already gained. These games are for a small sub-section of core gamers.

MGSV - Not as off putting as Bloodborne, but still not full on mainstream material. It's odd. It's quirky. It's known to have convoluted ass story that has been running for decades. It's not pick up and play, there are so many systems to this game that I'm still figuring new shit out. It's a franchise long past its glory days in terms of mass appeal. In many ways, it does follow trends that should make it a hit, but it still comes with its baggage. From what I understand it did put up some good numbers, but it was never going to compete with the gaming giants.

So yeah, I do get it man. I don't expect my favorite titles to appeal to a mass audience. As a matter of fact I'd be shocked if either of these games made that list. Average Joe doesn't want to die and over and over and over again learning the ins and outs of Bloodborne, or sinking 100+ hours into an infiltration sandbox while sorting through endless menus of options.

Considering how well the Halo main entries (so non-spinoffs, non-remakes, etc, just the actual 1,2,3,4,5 numbered games) sells, yes. Even if at the very bottom, I was fully expecting it to show up.

Still not far enough in Fallout 4 to say much about it, but Star Wars: Battlefront and GTAV are awesome.

Shame about Halo 5 not reaching the same heights anymore. It's a pretty great game and I need more time with the multiplayer.

If the gameplay in Battlefront is remotely similar to the beta, it's mind-numbing :P Looks really pretty though! Resisted the urge to buy it when the movie came out, do not regret it one bit XD

Damn you are just the worst. :P

I felt the same way about the beta. Unlike you, I'm a little bitch and caved upon all of the Star Wars hype. What I found though was quite a number of incredibly fun, late evenings with the game and having a blast. It was great too because I could see myself getting better and better as I played.

It's certainly not a stellar shooter but it is a fun one in my opinion. I haven't played anything in a while lately, but for my consoles that's in a stack of games waiting to be played along with Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, and Hyrule Warriors.

Probably pretty much identical to UK list I'm guessing. Its all the big mulitplats so no real surprises, although a little depressing.

If you ran this exact thread with the word Japan substituted for Murica you'd have the same people bashing the US and saying "dudebros" complaining about racism and people saying weeaboo :P

lol I have a friend who loses his shit like that, over games that aren't even hard sometimes.

First he'll blame it on the game not working right, being cheap, etc.. then he'll blame it on the game not taking his controller inputs. Then he'll blame the actual controller. Then he'll just flip out and break shit. He's mellowed out a bit as he's gotten older, but still a crazy ass.

I almost talked him into getting Bloodborne, just for the lulz of it all, but then decided that would be a dick move.

What exactly is wrong with that list? No game on that list could be considered straight up bad.

With the exception of GTA5, which was truly a good game (from 2013), none of those games is exactly good either. And that's coming from a Fallout fan bro.

Also 2 CoD's. Why. Just why.

I'm sure there are a lot of posts I will quote throughout this thread, but you're first. Mortal Kombat X is probably the best entry in the series in several years. NRS/WB has consistently supported it. Tomorrow they will announce GGPO is being incorporated. Hands down the best fighting game of 2015. It deserves a spot, even if it's in the lower region.

Eh, honestly that's not a bad list. Could America have done better? Sure. Could it have done worse? Yep. But on the whole those are ten pretty good, well made games with appeal to the masses that managed to chart. Can't complain, really.

@Desmonic

I'm thinking the game side of the halo franchise will do fine in the future. We are going to have to wait until the next mainline halo game to see if the franchise is still in decline and if the franchise can recover. The franchise is far from doomed and I do think halo 5 will sell well(>5million and maybe even 6 million), but nowhere near as well as previous halo games.I do think 343i is slowly taking the steps required to help the franchise grow again.I just hope they don't make any more major mistakes anymore.

I'm not surprised at that list of games in the top ten also.

@Desmonic: This thread seems to conform to your own definition of a "bait thread". Do you plan on moderating yourself? :-)

Addressing your big 'ol bolded question, it may be useful to note that all of the top sellers are multiplatform. Seven out of ten are on 4 different platforms. I'll leave the rest of the dot connecting to you.

Full disclosure, I personally did not enjoy H5 and hadn't played a Halo game in many years. I think the franchise is stale. But this list doesn't really speak to the strength of the Halo brand one way or another.

@FireEmblem_Man: I know you're probably trolling (gosh I hope so) but both terms are anti-social web lingo used by idiots who only play one kind of game: either Japanese niche games, or popular online shooters and/or sports titles.

Japanese niche gamers are often accused of being anti social and strange, while online multiplayer gamers tend to be seen as mindless and kind of dumb, unable to play deeper games that require thinking ahead. The truth is that this is a ridiculous stereo type on both sides. You might find people who actually fit those types perfectly, but the terms are widely hyperbolic and used on System Wars and other forum boards just to annoy the other side as opposed to be taken seriously.

Of course there are some who totally believe those terms to be accurate, but they tend to see things only from a very narrow and inexperienced view point.

TBH, most people are casuals. It's not just America. Yearly rehashes sell best in most countries.

To say the least, it does make sense. Most people aren't trying to invest in something like the witcher or deal with the frustration of Bloodborne. It's just much easier to play something they know and something their friends know and are likely to play. I can sit around and play Black Ops 3 with friends. I can't do that with Bloodborne or MGS.

You mean to tell me the same culture that loves Mcdonalds and Justin Bieber also loves CoD?

Don't be so silly.

Aaaawwwwwww...dangit, it does lol.

Y'all are no fun sometimes! :P

Des putting in the good work! :D

Anyway, fun's over folks. If anyone wants, feel free to do a proper thread with any of the subjects in the OP :)

Banning every word that might slightly offend someone is not the solution. People will just come up with new ones.

Oh, I know. Doesn't stop me from being frustrated, though, does it? :p
