http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mendheim/mutant-football-league?ref=recently_launched

If this fails I will be pissed.

The creator of Mutant League Football & Hockey brings you the funniest and roughest football game ever!

Monsters and Mutants take the field to battle it out in the most violent game ever played in this hilarious and brutal parody of professional Football. Mutant Football League pays homage to the classic Sega Genesis game by building a great playing action football game with deep strategy, creature customization, over-the-top violence and of course laugh-out-loud gross out humor.

My name is Michael Mendheim and I was the creator and lead designer for the original game, which I pitched to studio executives at Electronic Arts in late 1991. The game was released in 1993 and went on to become a #1 hit and was nominated for best sports game of the year by Jeff Gerstmann, Electronic Games and Gamepro magazines.

Mutant League also spawned a syndicated television series, a comic, a toy line and a sequel called, Mutant League Hockey. Then the game was suddenly cancelled and Mutant League was no more.

Over the last twenty years the press and fans of the original game (and the animated TV show) have kept the idea alive through online surveys, blogs, reviews and articles. Mutant League is always on the top 10 list of games people would like to see remade and for years fans and members of the gaming press have been asking me when the game will be resurrected.

While it would have been terrific to work with some of the talented individuals that are still at EA, I must say that were looking forward to having full creative control over a NEW storyline, characters and environments so that players can enjoy the absurdly grotesque, tongue-through-cheek, **monster-and-mutant, gameplay experience that we want to make.

We are going to build a fluid and fun football game with an assortment of monsters and mutants of all types who will be the stars of the league. These stars will do anything to stay on top, including battling each other to death.

You can play the game alone or go head to head against your friends and enemies. Numerous options will allow you to adjust the length of game and level of violence. Players will be able to compete in a single game, play-offs or full season mode.

The game will go beyond moment to moment football game tactics, so in addition to deciding if youre going to punt or go for it on 4th and one, youll also need a good strategy to keep your star players alive (while destroying as many players from the opposing team as possible). The game features will include the use of brutal enforcer players, field obstacles, hazards, player weapons and dirty trick plays (where throwing a bomb is literally throwing a bomb).  All of this will be packaged as a hilarious parody of all that we hold sacred and dear (football, star athletes, sports networks, videogames, mega-corporations, sports licensing and merchandising). There will be plenty of laugh-out loud humor to be had by all.

Mutant Football League Star Announcers prepare for the game.Mutant Football League Star Announcers prepare for the game.

Help us design the game you want to play!!!

You can help us decide what kind of creatures, teams, weapons, fields, and obstacles will be in the final product. Thats right, be part of the design team! There will be a private online design community set up for the backers to discuss the project with the development team. You can let us know your thoughts and feelings about the project and even vote on key design and marketing decisions such as weapon types, team & player names, dirty trick plays and the visual look of the characters.

Our plan is to deliver you a fun and hilarious game in 14 to 18 months or die trying (seriously - we will do our best to get the game out on time but what's most important is to deliver you a great playing football game).

Because this game was loved and still is to this day and the fans deserve it.  Because no game publisher will take a risk on the idea after ten years of trying.  The only way this game is going to get made is if YOU HELP US MAKE IT HAPPEN!

In return well put together an incredible team and give this project everything we have to deliver you a great playing football game with deep strategy, buckets of blood and plenty of off-the-wall moments that will make this game one of the most fun and memorable experiences you will ever have playing a  sports video game.  This is my promise to you... Now get out there and help us win one for the ripper!

These are the guys who are on board now. If this game becomes a reality because of your generosity, there will be more incredible talent joining us. Stay tuned and watch who gets unveiled in our Stretch Goals!

Use this handy chart to see a breakdown of all reward packages.

If we can make a our initial goal Kickstarter funding goal we're going to deliver a satisfying and fun experience to all of you. Everyone is going to be pretty happy. However if we raise funding beyond our initial goals we are going to use that money to create additional content like new character races, weapons and stadiums as well as expand across multiple platforms and next generation systems.

The project team behind this project has extensive experience in videogame design & development producing a magnitude of unique titles across different hardware platforms including, XBox 360, Playstation3, iOS and Android. We've learned from both our successes and failures on what to do and not to do. Going into this development, it is critically important to keep the product extremely focused and not implement too many different features. Our strategy is to deliver a fun and humorous game and then to gradually build on the engine and add more features it over time. Developing a Football game engine is very difficult and takes a lot of time. The core development leads have already developed numerous sports titles and understand the challenges they will face. As Creative Director and Producer of the project, Michael is hard at work building a small team of developers who have a wealth of experience engineering football and sports games and is in negotiations with several different companies concerning licensing an existing sports engine. Deals will be put in place and moved on, if our funding goals are reached. There is simply no better way to reduce development risk than to build the game on an existing and proven Football game engine.

Only 186 backers. They won´t make it. Their biggest mistake is relying on lems and not PC gamers in the first palce. Secondly, PC gamers are not very interesting in this genre.

You all need to look it up. It was one of the best games on the Sega Genesis. I am disappointed you all do not know this.

Mutant League Football and Mutant League Hockey were some of the best Genesis games ever.

I rather see EA being the ones to bring the series though.

I was actually just thinking about this game the other day as I looked at my shelf of video games, and saw that I no longer have a Sega Genesis

Blood Bowl is based off a table top game, and is turn-based.

Bloodbowl also has a real time mode (Although I've only played it once, wasn't for me)

This, so this. The kickstarter will fail because of that alone.

Loved the Genesis games, but yeah, making the Steam version a reach goal is gonna kill this.

Loved the Genesis games, but yeah, making every platform besides mobile a reach goal is a huge mistake.

I also just don't trust that it will be any good if mobile is the focus. It will necessitate game mechanics that allow it to work with a shitty touch interface, which means the game will have no complexity and require no skill.

I'm not excited, EA really ruined Blitz by taking away no late hitting because the serious subject of head trauma for football players has no place in a over the top football games.
