What IW is doing is extreme, yes. But what it's doing is putting the player in the enemies shoes. Only when you see it through that perspective do you feel more determined to end such injustices. Waatching a movie about won't have that affect.

Basically people crave realism in games. The love the realism of the gun sounds, the way a person looks when they get shot and die, the explosions and all. So why are people so unconfortable with this part of the game? They can take the realism of the act of killing but can't take the realism being part of a bad act?

My thoughts exactly. Do people even know half of the stuff that happens to civilians during wars?

No it's just a video game. If I let video games really affect me, I would have hatred for plumbers and love for turtles.

Well luckily I'm not buying Modern Warfare 1.1 (going to get some bashes for that) but I don't see how it is any different than killing people in GTA.

I voted yes for disturbing...but something being disturbing doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing. Like all good stories, getting an emotional response from something...even an unpleasant one is crucial. Otherwise you might as well play a game with no story at all.

No one would disagree with you....but the question was if you would find it disturbing, not whether you believe an actual mass shooting at an airport would be worse.

Innocent or not it's still killing. To say it's cool to kill soldiers but uncool to kill civilians is a bit hypocritical.

The thing is IW wants you to feel angry at the terrorist and what better way to show it then to play as one of them. If anybody actually enjoys this segment of the game then he/she has a sick mind.

If anything it's a way to make the protagonists look better because you see that the bad guys aren't just all mouth like most "Yeah we're gonna nuke you guys!" they're sick, they murder innocent people, I think it's a great way to show just how evil they are, more effective than a simple cutscene.

What the.... are you.... Do you not see the difference between: A) playing as a terrorist, running through a shopping mall or airport and massacring screaming civilians. and B) shooting armed enemies in a WAR in which two sides send SOLDIERS to fight one another? What a horrible, horrible, unbelievably ignorant comparison. Anyway I've read that it's optional to play through it, and the context makes a lot more sense now. I was never personally mortified but I knew the media would have a field day with it.

Yeah that would be a wake up call.:P Seriously, I don't seem to get disturbed by fake violence. Take zombies. Everyone loves zombies. But if you compare your average brain-loving zombie to an actual picture of a rotting human corpse, not very pretty. :(

Nothing will prevent me from enjoying it. In any case let me tell you with what i am disturbed with: I am distubed with the way people spoil the opening of the game, the first and second level and nice twists like this one, it would have been alot cooler if i didnt knew about it.

Yes I think the level is disturbing but I believe that is the purpose of the level. Obviously, you will not be playing as them the entire game so it's probably just a beginning set piece for the story. It introduces the villians in a way Infinity Ward knew the players would hate and it's not meant for someone to enjoy. Unlike GTA, Modern Warfare 2 makes it where you really hate the people killing the innocent civilians and although I think the media will stur a lot of controversy, I think this kind of thing is done in movies all the time

To a degree. I don't have a problem with the level in theory (in fact I love the idea of showing a conflict from the extremist's point of view), but it's an issue of execution (no pun intended). In order to pull off a level like this successfully, the developer needs a deft touch -- they need to express the extremist's mindset in such a way that it humanizes them (rather than just being evil for the sake of evil) without making light of the gravity of the scene.

Problem is I can't think of a single developer that has demonstrated the ability to walk that fine line (yes, that includes BioWare, Obsidian, Kojima, Silicon Knights, CD Projekt etc.), least of all IW. I'm sure (somewhat anyway, this is Activision after all) their intentions are good, but I can't imagine IW pulling this one off in a tasteful way.

In the realm of fiction there's a difference between glorifying terrible deeds, and showing them for thematic effect. It seems like Infinity Ward is doing the latter, thus I'm okay with it. Oh, and it's a video game.

I myself was a bit disturbed by the video. I know people will say "Oh, it's a video game, not real!", but wow. The way the civilians reacted to the terrorists (or you, the player, I should say) is very realistic and the graphics themselves are excellent, it's uncomfortably similar to genuine manslaughter of hundreds of innocent civilians. I don't know how that benefits story at all, I don't see why IW couldn't have put you in the shoes of a civilian instead, and watched as terrorists killed you and hundreds of others, including perhaps your family and friends. It would have been much more powerful and would have triggered a real emotional response, but doing it in MW2 for pure entertainment? That's creepy.

When in Modern Warfare did you play as a terrorist and gunned down 100s of innocent civilians? Remind me, my memory seems to have failed me.

Right. Spoilers follow: The opening credits u get dragged and driven to a palace to get shot in the head by a terrorist. Then you get blown up by a nuke and all of the marines die, except Griggs.
