In terms of revenue it will make more than a movie or a book, because they are what, a quater the price of a video game? New movie MAYBE 30 dollars, new book if hard cover around there, but MW2 will sell at 69.99. It might have the same budget for a movie, but its selling for a lot more.

These analysts are basically saying it's going to be like Halo 3 on 3 different platforms, which I don't really buy. The Halo series always has these monster launches because it has a massive hardcore fanbase, which I don't really see in COD. It will sell a ton over time, but I don't think the launch is going to be as massive as expected (although it could still break records considering it's on 3 platforms).
No, they are not. some are. the more pros (gamasutra) are luckily not.....[QUOTE="StarGalaxyTHE"][QUOTE="Technoweirdo"]
Analysts are that stupid.

You've already established it's pre-orders must be true because it's popular, but you haven't given a reason as to why you think its so popular. Well, you failed to answer my question. I'll answer with another question. How many times does a sequel outsell its predecessor? Answer: very rarely, and the sequel must be truly revolutionary in terms of both gameplay and content to make it happen. A Modern Warfare sequel lacks the room to maneuver to make those kinds of revolutions (they have to stay within the realms of modern reality, after all).

A Modern Warfare sequel lacks the room to maneuver to make those kinds of revolutions (they have to stay within the realms of modern reality, after all). Sure GTA4's one-day sales are terrific and among the tops of this generation, but compare the sales long-term (that's the important one) to the GTA3 trilogy (fact: GTA3 sold around 7.5 million, Vice City 9 million, and San Andreas around 12 million; in comparison, GTA4 just cracked the 7 million mark). Actually, San Andreas should be around 23 million now......... and why should we compare MW2 to GTA3 again?????? Halo 2 outsold CE, H3 outsold Halo 2. Gears 2 outsold Gears 1 KZ2 outsold KZ 1 MW 2 will outsell MW easily. it's logical and fact buddy :P[QUOTE="StarGalaxyTHE"][QUOTE="Danm_999"] Why aren't you answering my question? :/ What leads you to believe that MW2 is more highly anticipated than any other title? Point is, GTA4 is selling great, but if you really want great numbers, look at the one before it. MW's numbers are comparable to GTA4, but you have to remember they got those numbers before a recession hit us. Gaming sales tend to take a dip in a recession as people hunker down and stick to what they already have.[QUOTE="StarGalaxyTHE"] Well, you failed to answer my question.StarGalaxyTHE
Killzone 2 outselling KZ1 isn't saying much--the original was mediocre. But AFAIK, Gears of War 2 is comparable but not better than its predecessor--5.5mil each. And each of those games you listed had media blitzes and everything, not to mention being highly anticipated. Thing is, will Activision step up to the plate and try to defy the recession?
Better yet, let's see if more than one analyst gets the same picture.
[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"]MW2 beating GTA 4? This i would disagree with. It has a legit shot at Halo 3 ofcourse. Halo 3 was exclusive, MW2 is on 3 platforms. StarGalaxyTHEread my link. GTA iv did only 3.6 million in 1 day. MW2 will do 4.6 million and beat any motion picture, book, food or video game in terms of revenue. Why are you saying "will" as in you can predict the future?
But as crazy as Halo or even GTA4? Crazy enough to attract new gamers?I don't doubt this happening. CoD MW has a crazy following.

Want to know why GTA4 didn't outsell SA? because PS2 = 150M units, PS3 + 360 = barely 50 million :PLike I said a while ago, the name itself can sell millions. How many millions? I dont know we still have 5 months to see the result...everything right now is just speculation.

That's true.
Of course it's a mulitplat FPS game and it's very good so I expect good sales.
I'm not sure but was Halo 3 mentioned in the article?
However what I'm interested in is the sales record it will have on the Xbox360.
*will it beat day one records set by Halo3 on the Xbox360.
*what percentage of total sales are attributed by the Xbox360 and it's installed userbase.
*where did perform the best sales wise Xbox360 vs PC?
*how many consoles will it move?
* more interestingly what will the previews and reviews are going to be like.
my money is it will not beat GTA4.
What's the level of anticipation and pre-orders compared to GTA4?
What about the level of FPS competition that will be around near its launch schedule?
GTA 4 didn't have that many "sandbox" games to compete with and has a longer history.
I guess I'll eat my words if MW2 does beat GTA4, but this is a pretty interesting titanic comparrison and challenge to GTA4s performance.
CoD > GTA > Halo > WoW in attracting new gamers and opening week/days sales record /hype.Okay...why? I expect a detailed and referenced reason for why CoD is more attractive to new gamers. Failure to do so will bring obvious consequences. As for reasons why not, I'll give a few.Call of Duty and its new spinoff Modern Warfare, while a general good seller, doesn't usually get filled with media hype. The original MW, while among the top of the heap, doesn't leave a lot of room to improve. The reason for this lack of room is that it was released this generation, unlike GTA4 and Halo 3, both of which are sequels from last generation. Sequels within a generation tend to be viewed a bit dimly; Gear of War 2 is the best-selling member of this club, and it's only managed to match, not truly surpass, its predecessor. Also, as mentioned Halo and GTA went back to last gen; so do their fan followings. Call of Duty's fan following isn't at strong, and MW's only picked up speed this generation. CoD fanbase >>>>> Halo fanbase. Halo had its days from 1 - 3. I guarantee Halo 4 or ODST won't sell as well.......[QUOTE="StarGalaxyTHE"][QUOTE="HuusAsking"]But as crazy as Halo or even GTA4? Crazy enough to attract new gamers?HuusAsking
Same here, i got first for PC and got it for PS3 as a gift, both were terrible compared to the rest of the games in the franchise. The singleplayer was good for 1 run through and was a great time, but the multiplayer was disgusting compared to COD1 or 2. I will not be buying MW2.How many hermits are buying Modern Warfare 2? I didn't buy the first one and after playing it, I'm not tempted to buy the second.
FrozenLiquid
but if the past is at all a good projection, good sales will hurt the quality of future COD gamesWho cares?
It's not like it's going to help the quality of the game.

Plus that doesn't answer the stigma of a sequel within a generation. From all the games I've studied in the past two to three generations, only the original MW achieved the feat, and only because it was a radical jump from the WW2-based CoD3. MW2 won't have that same luxury. In every other instance, I can't find a case.[QUOTE="StarGalaxyTHE"] CoD > GTA > Halo > WoW in attracting new gamers and opening week/days sales record /hype.StarGalaxyTHE
