COD 4 was only okay. The reason it was so "great" at the time was due to a lack of serious competition for online games. That's changed, and CoD's netcode is just not good enough to be anything but a frustration inducing activity. It really is a pos product. Maybe if they didn't hire Ice-T for Black Ops they could have paid for dedicated servers for every CoD game this gen, and then they'd actually be doing something good for the game.

Halo 3 didn't sell nearly as much as COD 4.

As long as they keep making yearly CoD games with minor improvements for each one, then SW won't praise it at all. The only reason why CoD4 was praised was because it pushed the series forward. The games afterwards didn't do that (except for maybe MW2). It just became a yearly release with the exact same gameplay we've already seen with the same bad animation. Look at CoD animation, and then look at BF3 animation. I'm sure you'll see the difference. It feels like the same game every year. Just look at the gameplay changes from Uncharted 2 to Uncharted 3, and from Bad Company 2 to Battlefield 3. They're big and noticeable. That's what makes them appealing, and sequels should always strive to improve from their predecessors, not be their predecessors.

The engine, graphics, animation, and gameplay are outdated. CoD is overly simplistic (which is part of why it's popular), and seeing as DICE is able to make 9 maps (each one being at least the size of 3 CoD maps with some even being the size of 5-7 CoD maps) you'd think that the CoD devs would be able to make 20+ maps. Well, I'm sure they do make 20+ maps: 8 goes into the game, and then the rest get sold later as map packs courtesy of Activi$ion. They're a disgrace to the vision name :x

XVision84

MW3 will come with 16 maps, just like COD4 and MW2 did. Not sure where you're getting the 8 figure from?

How? They're actually taking a step BACK from Black Ops, there's even less modes now that there was before. How is that progress?

I don't get the hate for MW2's balancing issues, while those same ppl turn a blind eye to CoD4. I personally found there to be just as many ways to exploit each MP map in MW1 as MW2. That's just me though.

Edit: The last CoD game that could be considered to have only minor problems is CoD2 imo.

MW3 engine? What MW3 engine? It's still using the same engine COD4 used!

GhoX

I gotta say, this is priceless coming from someone with a Half-Life avatar. Source is older than the CoD 4 engine, yet it still holds up fine for new titles.

What are you on about, Halo 3 sold more than COD4 in 2007. http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Call_of_Duty and http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Halo_3 Cod 4 sold around 7.1 million wheras H3 sold around 8.2 million. Get your facts straight.

Well you are actually wrong there... There is less focus on killstreaks this time and more focus on combat. While they may have added in new killstreaks they are doing a fine job of balancing and refining them to make sure the game dosen't turn out like Modern Warfare 2 where you are reliant on them.

CoD is always fun, just lacking in change and depth. I'll still buy MW3, maybe even the hardened edition if I can, but I'll still hear a bunch of whiners with no life complaining about people enjoying a game they don't. Even though its annoying and hypocritical (you don't see me complaining about Skyrim to Skyrim fans), I think EA is at fault for being terrible people and using their marketing to ride CoD's coattails, and at the very least I think the series should start injecting some change if it wants to keep the haters at bay.

Cod 4 ran on the IW 3.0 engine and MW3 runs on the MW3 engine. And coming from the guy who has a Half Life avatar that statement is very hypocritical. The source engine is how old now ?

I don't remember Team Fortress 2/Portal 2/etc copying Half Life 2's graphics or gameplay. Source engine has experienced significant updates over the years, and no two series (minus episodes) using the same engine look the same: there are different levels of quality, different focuses, and different art-styles. COD games have looked the same since COD4.

Oh man you just opened my eyes. I hated CoD4. Mario Kart DS was honestly the first online game I really got into, Resistance was my first fluid online FPS, CoD4 had no novelties for me. That being said, I played the living hell out of Mario Kart and Resistance when, even though they weren't as strong as CoD4, I couldn't even make it past level 30 in CoD4. Then Resistance 2 came out and I played the hell out of it.

Is it even possible that CoD is so popular because it is the first game to popularize and nail online on a yearly basis? Like Halo, but multiplat with a yearly release. Brilliant.

Don't believe half the people on here who say they wont buy MW3. If anything, even more existing 360/PS3/PC owners will be buying the game. New hardware sales wont be enough to account for the increased sales of COD, so that means that there are even more gullible existing 360/PS3/pc owners out there who will be buying the game than ever before.

Back in the days of Call of Duty 4, COD was a monster! Everybody loved it, and only the haters hated.

Black Ops was hailed as the redeeming COD, but it wasn't all that great.

COD4 was a perfect game, with only minor balancing problems.

MW3 is going back to the draw board and designing the MP from ground up from COD4.

Running on the MW3 engine, an engine that focused on fast, fluid gameplay rather than graphics...

It will be a sure-fire hit.

xXShortroundXx

Its not going back to the drawing board, i'm sorry. You want MW3 to be good so badly that you will make stuff up in your head. It will be just another bad cod game.

My point is really that they don't "nail" the online. Every CoD game is laggier and more imbalanced than the one before it, so the games get worse. I would give them credit if they nailed the online, but they don't. If you spend your entire budget on marketing and voice actors that leaves little for actual game development, and it shows.

Black Ops had some of the most pathetically easy multiplayer in any FPS I've played. I grew up with CS 1.6 and I religiously play TF2, and after trying Black Ops I was amazed at how many kills I was getting. The game practically aims for you, and everyone else is too stupid to actually try STAYING ALIVE instead of running around out of cover and trying to go rambo. It's a pathetic mockery of the lineage of online FPS games, and I see MW3 as being no different. Don't even get me started on the single-player, too - where MW1 had some ingenuity (keyword: some), MW2 was a complete rehash that aimed for shock content and Black Ops has a garbage offline component that's even more worthless than its online component. It's amazing how a series that started off so strong went so downhill.

Lol. I'm sorry but MW3 is just going to be more of the same. MW3 is not going back to the drawing board, and the multiplayer (from what we've seen so far) has not been built from the ground up. If anything, all it has done is made a few changes and added a couple of modes which are variants of existing modes found in every shooter on Earth. And it's not called the MW3 engine. The engine is a heavily modified decade old engine.

From videos posted all over the internet, 100% of all textures and animations have been ripped from MW2 and previous COD games so the developers have had to do very little work in creating the game other than a new setting, and another, yet very vague story. They are relying on gullible gamers to keep buying crap. They are giving gamers the finger and you guys are saying "thank you, can i please have more".

Yeah right. A 3 hour campaign and the same MP with a new coat of paint every year wont appeal to most core games on this board. MW2.5 wont redeem its self here and i think most core gamers will agree.

Nope, it's gonna be the same as MW2. I think at this point nothing can redeem CoD in the eyes of SW. Even Gameinformer, who are huge CoD fanboys, said that MW3 feels more like a glorified mappack than anything.

It basically invented Modern shooter games, look how scripted games got after COD came out. Bad company 1= open ended campaign, bad company 2 = COD clone campaign (I loved the campaign in that game, but its pretty much true.)

Gameinformers reviews are allways questionable. But just because they aren't changing up the formula much isn't a bad thing, it is very successful and it has proven to work with games like Mario / WoW so why would COD be like Halo and try to change it up every single game and ruin a great franchsie ?

This is true, I wish they kept BF3 more similar to bad company 2, I don't really like the feel of it. Especially the new in-game menu.

I don't think the problem is lack of change, but rather a lack of changes from things that suck, the the netcode or p2p system. P2p has no place in modern gaming, and bad netcode just ruins the online MP of any game.

Why would anyone buy another lag riddled CoD game?

It's not that they don't change anything, it's that they don't improve anything, and in fact go backwards. CoD 4 has decent hit detection, which hasn't existed in a CoD game since.

The fact that COD turned into a glorified arena shooter annoyed me. It tries to be serious with all its real guns etc. but the fact that there is an announcer shouting things every 5 seconds annoys me. Its almost like a modern military unreal tournament now but people somehow don't want to admit it. It can't try to be serious and involve throwing knives and RC car bombs. MW1 was a hell of a game and I will always admit that. I loved that game but COD has been soiled over the past few years and its mainly due to the vast majority of meat heads that play it now that annoys me most. I fear BF will go down these lines eventually too unfortunately so I want to enjoy it now while not every single person hates it

I have issue with what you said about Mario. Many of the games are very different from eachother in terms of gameplay.

I really hope this is the swan song for the series. Guitar Hero went down. So will this.

Not a chance in hell. No matter how good MW3 might be, as far as System Wars is concerned, Call of Duty is responsible for all the world's problems.

I'm not getting it, but like Black Ops - I'll play it when I'm at my friend's house.

Not a chance.

I will give it 4 to 5 more games. It will eventually wear out its welcome.

COD is fun, but it lacks any depth for me to keep coming back to it. I prefer either objective based games like BC2, Tf2,Counter Strike or Killzone 3 over COD, or games that are awesome at deathmatch, like Halo, Quake 3 etc

[QUOTE="Pug-Nasty"]

Right, so Halo 3 came out some other year ?!?!?

Halo 3 was better than CoD4, in my opinion. Halo 3 was the most played Xbox Live game till Black Ops came out. People seem to have forgotten...

As long as the Grand Emperor Bobby Kotick exists, Infinity Ward will be strapped to a table and forced to regurgitate Call of Duty titles so he can fill his vault of money with $100 bills and wade through it for hours.

CoD is dead on this board.
