very underwhelming

I'm glad I didn't buy it, I only borrowed it from a friend. The gameplay mechanics doesn't feel all that different from other sandbox games, despite the game trying to dissasemble and rearrange them and trying to pass it as fresh, but I think it's all very superficial, like corellation between your deeds, karma and the distinctive powers you will get from each of the ends . Don't get me wrong, it's a competent game in its own right from what I could have gathered, but the question is, do we really need another sandbox and what new does it bring to the existing dozens of such games in this gen? The whole experience just doesn't feel fresh enough to me. I was also not impressed with it graphically, but that's the least of concerns, since I'm not a graphics-***** anyway. To be honest, I'm not surprised by the scores Destructoid (6.5), Edge (7), and Eurogamer (7) gave to it, plus I thought their criticism of this game was very insightful, meticulous, balanced and reasonable, and not totally biased towards negatives.

Don't judge me It's only my opinion. Overall, I think it's a decent-to-good game, but hardly a magnet to buy a PS3. Honestly, I've had more fun with Crackdown and Red Faction: Guerrilla. And I would like to also point out that thinking that exclusives are supposed to be the best is sometimes deceiving.

Initial impression? That means you have just started.

Play the game a bit more and watch your powers progress.

This game along with Assassin's Creed 2 and Crackdown are probably the best sandbox games this gen and you say Infamous does nothing outside of the box. Well for one it features climbing up high buildings. GTA 4 does not feature anything.

Yea it got average scores on those places and yet it recieved AAA here, IGN, Gametrailers, etc.

I thought it was an awesome game and it was my GOTY until Batman and Assassin's Creed 2 released. Definitely one of my favorite PS3 games. Loads of fun.

I started it the other day (My brother got it in the fall), and I love it so far. I only had time to do two missions though.

My initial impression about InFAMOUS is..."very underwhelming"

"I'm glad I didn't buy it, I only borrowed it..."

-------------

I would recommend playing through InFAMOUS or at least a sizable chunk of InFAMOUS before giving an impression of "Very Underwhelming" (unless you've already done that :P). If you feel the same way once you've put a lot more time into it, it's understandable, we all have our own opinions. ;) Right now, you are comparing your extremely limited time with the game to older games that you put more time into. If you have put more time into it, let me know I'm off base if possible, your opening post seemed to indicate you just got started with the game. I'm human I might have read wrong. :P

As far as your enjoyment of Early Febuary 2007's Crackdown, did you ever play Spiderman or Hulk Sandbox Games last generation? They were awesome. Spidey and Hulk even have current gen versions of those games, and they play good. I did play those sandbox games, along withevery single GTA's, and Getaway, True Crime, Driver, you name the sandbox game. I went through every other sandbox game back then. So, when I got my mits on Crackdown, it didn't blow me away, or impress me at all. So I can understand that feeling of been there done that...The only feature Crackdown excelled at in my opinion was Co Op, but other than that, it wasn't superior to InFAMOUS. Even the majority of the worlds Critics agree with me there. Still, it's a bit early to compare, as you've mentioned you just got your PS3 recently in your other announcement thread, and that you borrowed this, it's possible that perhaps maybe you haven't given InFAMOUS the years that Crackdown has had or the time you got to spend with it. :)

CRACKDOWN SCORES

InFAMOUS SCORES

As you can see from the links, they aren't that far apart in quality, and one could argue they are about equal in their eye...but for one to be great and the other to be very underwhelming, it's tough to see. You know? Still, It's all good! :P

You seem to be well versed on the low scores InFAMOUS receieved from lesser sites (while not agreeing with the high scores), so with that much research on InFamous under your belt, you may have already an idea of what you won't like and how much you won't like it. If possible, try to give the game a fair chance, or perhaps just give it back to your friend for a different game (You mentioned it was borrowed and you were happy it was borrowed).

If you go into any game experience with a preconcieved notion, or with too much hype, it can ruin the game, at least that's what I noticed for me.:P

If possible, make sure to go into any of these games with a fair shake, if need be, pretend they are on a different console. That advice works for one of my real life buddies. :P

--------------

TC, you loved the low scoring Alone in the Dark on 360, giving it a personal score of "8". Just and idea here, work with me :P, but perhaps you should check out the improved PS3 Version, Alone in the Dark : Inferno, as that may be something you will dig more. Maybe more than InFAMOUS. :)

Either way, have a wonderful day, and I hope you find something that you like about the game or another game! :P :)

I'm not saying everyone will like InFAMOUS, heck not everyone enjoys Mario, Metal Gear, Halo, God Of War, Streetfighter, or Zelda, I am just trying my best to be helpful. :)

I enjoyed inFamous much more than Assassins Creed 2 :o

I have not played much sandbox games this gen, but Sucker Punch manages to deliver an experience where you really feel like a superhero and having the city as your personal playground. From the fluidity of travelling in Empire City to the enjoyable combat system, inFamous has all the hallmarks of what I deem as a really good sanbox game in my eyes.

I didn't like Infamous at all. Biggest PERSONAL let down of 2009. So glad it was a Gamefly.

I didn't like the characters, the city, the enemies, any of it.

It played decent, but nothing ground breaking. The enemy AI is cheap, and the story was cringe worthy even for comic inspired stuff. The moral choices were so black and white and inane to the story they may as well had you choose good or bad Cole at the start.

I know I am in the minority on the subject of Infamous around here, but it really is one of those "good" games I couldn't stand.

Infamous brought me back to that pure old school gaming feeling, had a blast playing thru it and collecting trophies. It's an awesome game imo. Best Sandbox game I played this gen easily.

So, you didn't have a preconcieved notion, but you "expected something that would cure cancer?" Perhaps hype killed it for you? Just a guess.

I will give an example. I saw The Matrix when it first was released in the theatres. I almost saw something else, but last minute at the ticket counter, I bought four tickets for the Matrix. I then watched it, expecting some cheapy movie, and it was great.

A few years later, I let a friend borrow the movie, as he hadn't seen it, and because of the hype, he hated it. He saw ads that used techniques from the movie, he couldn't wait to get it over with so he could say he saw it.

I'm convinced had he seen the movie opening night with me without any hype, he would have dug it. Hype kills if you ask me. One advantage to being a multiconsole owner is I have access to games before the fans go nuts with praise. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Personally, my experience going into InFAMOUS was that this was a new IP, sandbox game made from the creator's of SLY COOPER.

The Meta score for the Three Sly Games on PS2 were :

Sly Cooper 1 : 86/100

Sly Cooper 2 : 88/100

Sly Cooper 3 : 83/100

So, I expected an New AA (80-89/100) franchise from the Developers of InFAMOUS, Sucker Punch. I was a bit worried as this was their first PS3 game, and it was a new IP (we all know those new IP's can struggle in sales, no matter the quality). The fact InFAMOUS got AAA at some sites surprised me a bit, but I liked the platforming segments, and ease of climbing/gliding on rails, etc. :P I hope this helps! :)

It was my personal GOTY. Is that a crime? Is it wrong of me to say the game was crazy fun and offered a great story? Yeah, those are my impressions.

MW2, now there is a game that can be called underwhelming.

We have now reached a point to where great PS3 games have to cure cancer and 360 games can just be good games. The momentum has truly shifted in System Wars.

Just because this is a PS3 game doesn't mean it doesn't belong in a blog. Especially one this old.

And yes, I wouldn't give it higher than 8.

Infamous is good but it is quite sad that the karma options aren't that important, it only affects how the story goes and in some ways. For me, Infamous is a good game and if they made Infamous2 then it would be great if Sucker Punch fixed all the problems of the first one like Ubisoft did with AC1.

I liked the game, mainly because of the story. But the city was'nt alive enough, and there was'nt enough things to do when I had finished the story. I would say this game is alot like the first Assassins Creed. Assassins Creed 2 fixed most of the problems the first game had, and it would have been cool if InFAMOUS 2 could do the same thing. But I don't know if it will ever be made.

Keep playing, as you progress you become more powerful, and eventually the whole game starts to show why it's so well reviewed.

He shouldn't blame anyone if they think inFAMOUS is amazing. That's on him , not on happy inFAMOUS fans. The reality is that it is an 85% reviewed game , some think it is superb , some great , and some others good. Where does all of this cure cancer nonsense come from?

Thought the same thing to be honest. Didn't grab me and the sandbox design was that of GTA, highly restrictive. As far as I am concerned games like Red Faction Guerrilla and Crackdown are *MUCH* better sandbox games, and have a *far* better understanding of sandbox design. Of and why impose such a **** sidekick on the player? Really.Jeesh.

Yeah, I did miss that part, I was talking about the original post. As for the graphics king nonsense, that's what my original comment was referencing. I didn't mean that you made the threads, I was talking in general.

As for infamous, the game IS overrated. It has a TERRIBLE cast of characters including the lead and the world is bland. Two things save it:

The gameplay/controls are somewhat tight, although the sniping enemies was incredibly annoying.

It came out when there wasn't much competition. The spring of 09 was pretty weak for releases. It was, in fact horrible.

Infamous is a game you have to beat to appreciate. The game was awesome in its own right. I beat it twice and right now I am going through a 3rd time just because I downloaded those gigawatt blades that I didnt have when I got the game. Its very fun game IMO and really did deserve the 9.

I felt that way through most of the first island. But once you hit the second island the game really turns a corner. The game is a bit hard early on without all your abilities unlocked. Initial impressions don't really give it a fair shake.

On a whole I THROUGHLY enjoyed the game.

TC, as a resident critic of inFamous, I disagree with you. I still prefer Prototype, Crackdown to this Electro, Sith rip off. The powers, to me, were underwhelming, and that is a major part of a game that features a regular guy who gets super powers. But the climbing and look of the game were phenomenal, and scored major points for me. The story is good, but I guess I read a lot of comics, because the so called twist, I saw coming a good bit ahead. It is a good to very good game imo. 7-8, imo.

very underwhelming

And I would like to also point out that thinking that exclusives are supposed to be the best is sometimes deceiving.

its probably not for you...give it a little bit longer. it gets more fun as you start to unlock better powers.

My initial impression of inFAMOUS was that it seemed very, very generic. But the story and powers just grow in you, and becomes very fun.

I think that nails one of my major issues with the game. I'm a comic reader from waaaay back and the story felt pedestrian and very predictable to me. It's like every average comic story I ever read with Electro as the hero. As many times as I've seen Spiderman kick his ass by basically throwing water on him or throwing him in water, it sort of negates any kind of weight Cole has as a strong lead character. That and the fact that Cole was as about as interesting as a slab of marble, diminished the game quite a bit for me. I did enjoy the climbing and some of the powers although I hated the city and didn't find too much within it worth saving.

It took a while for me to warm up to inFamous. I got a little under halfway thru the game and just got sick of it; I didn't touch it for a few months. Then this Christmas I went back to it, wanting to finish it, and had an awesome time.

Some things that bothered me about the game:

  • Repetition
  • voice-acting
  • climbing could use polish

But it was all worth it; I really enjoyed everything that happened at the end.

I have Polish fully localized version by the way, and the voice acting is horrible (I despise Polish localizations, only PC RPGs get it right, but they're usually backed by huge companies, so there's plenty of $$$$ for localizations of these), it's not like generic companions devoid of any distinctive traces of personality help either...

play it some more ;) trust me, when i was able to glide and grind, the game became ALOT better. Just being able to climb the building, jump on a power line, grind it, hit the end, glide to the next powerline, jump down to the rail tracks, grind that... SO much fun. also i don't know how many people got this upgrade for the "electric rocket launcher", but i loved shooting the rocket in the air, zapping an enemy and see the giant ball of eletricity come crashing down on him like a javelin rocket launcher

ehem... game IS awesome

Keep playing the game, it is a very underwhelming game when you first start. I convinced one of my friends to buy it, and let my other friend borrow mine after i was done with it, and both gave me crap on how it sucked when they first started, but i just told them to keep playing and now its one of their favorite games. You might not get the same experience, but once you are introduced to the open world better and get more powers it will be hard to put down the game.

What does any of this have to do with SW? Post it either in your blog or the InFamous section...

Crackdown came off as being very "meh" to me outside of playing it in co-op. inFamous is a blast though. I love it to death.

The mechanics of it are fine, great even, I just couldn't bring myself to care about the world I used them in. Both the presentation and writing was lacking. The game felt kind of dull and janky in that regard. And Zeke... I would've enjoyed this game so much more if you could fry that douche. And unlike games like Crackdown, the game's not particularly great at just letting you fool around.

And what was great for example in Crackdown, that during that "fooling around" you could complete some of the tasks in the game too.

My issue with the game is it's frame rate.

When you're near the Ocean you'll find a smoother frame rate than what's in most of the game.

other than that the game is awesome! with a broken health system.....

I wanna play that game now.
