Do fun stuff to it like hack the OS and fill it with emulators and roms and internet streaming players and things and make it useful again.
There must be a tonne of cool stuff you can do with an old PS3 if look around the net and have a bit of imagination.
Fun fact: the US military bought them wholesale to use the cpu and gpu's as processing farms as they were being sold at a loss and thus the most cost efficient processors on the market.
I think my PS3 has been used about 2 dozen times or so in the past 18 months. It's just hooked up to the upstairs TV (the wife insisted on me putting a wall mount up with the 40inch flat screen and connecting the PS3 to it so she could use it while she worked out) for streaming Netflix (since we don't do cable nor satellite) and for playing DVD/BD movies.....she just uses her iPad for watching shows and rarely turns on the TV and PS3.
I've since built a HTPC/Plex computer that I put all my movies on so, so the PS3 can now stream anything on Plex as well.....but the system just isn't used much anymore. The batteries on the controllers drain between each power up of the system, because it sits so long between uses. Not to mention that I have maybe 3 games left for the PS3 that I'll never play....
I still have my PS2 in the original box. She worked last time I tried her out, but that was nearly 8 years ago. She just sits on the shelf with a handful of games (even a FF Tactics game for PS1) that I could play on it if she powers up.....maybe I'll have to test her out again soon.
Well, It's been Xbox One and PS4 gen for a while now, so it's about time to catch up.
Why is there any urgency to catch up? There are tons of games on the PS3 that are fun that won't get ported to the PS4 that could keep someone busy for a long time. You could play those games while the price of the PS4 goes down.

I went to move it last night and it booted up this time... not sure what's going on, although intermittent starting seems at least as bad a sign as failing to start, from a repair perspective. Something aint right...
Why does a weak thread like this make it to two pages? And I thought we all agreed that at this stage in the game all PS3's were used as George Foreman grills.
