i posted this in the PS3 forums, i thought i'd share it with the SW people too

so on christmas eve my PSN got hacked, i don't know how, but somehow someone logged in using my email and my password and used my credit card info saved to my PSN account to buy $150 PSN games.

i called sony, they said it wasn't possible to do that. i called my bank, they were a big help, refunded the fraudgelent purchases in days.

so i call sony the next week, because i saw my playstation wallet had been funded by this person and had $93 in it still from when he funded it to download games logged in as me, then switch to his profile and play them off his hard drive

i called and said, this $93 is in my PSN wallet, is there any way i can get it taken off, i don't want to get in trouble, the money was refunded by my bank

a SCEA rep says theres no way they can take it off, and recommends i use it, and says i won't get in trouble for it

then yesterday, i can't log in, an error code saying i can't use PSN with that account

i called sony, i've been banned. i asked why, a very polite specialist says the money was refunded by my bank, and sony never refunds PSN purchases them selves, so i'm looked at as in debt to sony. i explain the fraud again, specialist sympathizes but says theres really no way for me to prove the wrong doing since it was all done logged in as me, and he's right. it puts me in a very sticky situation

he says i have to pay the $150 to sony to get my previous PSN account ilovelucy (lucy is my girlfriend of 3 years it isn't a refernecec to the TV show) to be re-activated

OR i make a new account and lose all my PSN games, well only some of them. some still work like pixel junk monsters

so all in all i got banned, and lost my profile coz some thief made off with the perfect crime it seems

my new profile is aggro_KEV if anyone wants to add me, i play MGO, LBP, crash commando a lot

and plz don't say i'm a fakeboy i posted a thread discussing this pressing issue when it happened and people called me a fakeboy, but most fakeboys don't spend 2 years with a level 27 gamespot account just to make up this elaborate of a story

if you think i'm fake then go ahead, but if you have a PS3 plz request aggro_KEV and i'll message you back saying i'm darth psychosis

I don't know what to say, I just don't understand how someone would hack your account. You didn't game share with anyone you didn't know did you? If you did, did you change your password? Or did you log in to another PS3 somewhere maybe and never delete your login info? Just some ideas not that it matters much now. Anyway I feel for you, the only thing I don't like about the age we live in is it's so easy to get screwed these days. I have a buddy at work that got his ID stolen and supposedly the people that did it have rang up thousands of dollars in debt under his name, so think the $150 you lost could be worse. At least you got your money back.

$150 in PSN games? There's hardly that many games on the PSN worth that much, either way it doesn't make sense because they can't play these downloaded games if you are either 1) online at the same time or 2) if you change your password. I'm not saying it didn't happen but to me it just doesn't make sense why anyone would be stupid enough to even steal from someone to download a game that can't be played if the person with the original account can so easily stop this person from playing those games. Plus, it's not like they can resell the games at a pawn shop, i'd just steal the credit card information and go crazy instead of buy games haha.

That does suck... which is one reason why I've yet to even bother buying PSN games.... I don't like my data stored... heck I refrain from using my card on XBL too.

if you use the persons email and password once you can buy $40 socom, $30 burnout, $20 wipeout, $30 warhawk, $40 GT5P

and you download it as them, then switch back to you're profile and play the game, it lets you without being signed in as them, which i find upsetting now oviously

overall i ended up with my money back so thats good.

they downloaded this $150 worth of games within 6 or 8 hours of one another, between 1am and 10am, i was most likely asleep

i don't know why on earth they credited my PSN wallet with more money though, i suppose they planned on getting back in soon, but after i noticed the charges a day later on my card i erased my card info from PSN and changed my password

i know its a fairly simple process to gameshare on PSN i never have i almost did once but my buddy did it with a friend of ours that downloaded warhawk, and said it wouldn't allow him to start it since he wasn't the original purchaser. so i lost interest in game sharing coz the only game i wanted to get through that method wasn't an option, thus i never gave out my info to no one

Don't know if you know this but you can remove your credit card information after you've used it so that this type of situation cannot occur. I know it's too late now but for you're new account you can always purchase an item off psn then remove your cc info so that no one else can use it. You will still able to download any games that you downloaded as long as your within the 5 download limit.

I'm surprised that the sony reps didn't mention to you for the future that you can remove your credit card info. But then again, when you look at it through Sony's eyes; they still make money regardless of whether or not it is the actual user purchasing content, so i can see why they aren't too enthusiastic to help your problem.

That's fraud in the real world. The PSN is no safer or less safe than any website or McDonalds you use your card at, so this is blog material

You could just buy PSN or XBL cards (BB now has PSN cards).

as you sais yourself, your password change made your account secure again, so check the people who had access to your PS3 and could know your password ... doesn't sound like a hack, more like someone near you being an a$$

You or a family member likely had already shared the acount once in the past and forgotten about it, can have been over a year ago.

As the the rep said it IS impossible to hack the PSN credentials, the only way to get trough it is by brute force wich unless your name starts with tripple A makes it extremely unlikely for you to have been a victim.

A likely scenario is that you created your acount on a friends console to "share" a game like pixeljunk and neglected to remove the acount afterwards.
