My parents did that to me with the original Gameboy back in the day. I can't think of any other medium than video games where this technique works so well.

Man, I remember when it didn't take an expensive piece of electronics to get that excited over a gift. I remember running around the backyard in excitement and youthful exuberance when I got the action figure I wanted for my birthday.

I miss getting that excited over gifts, though.
