For me, Wizardry: Labyrinth of lost souls on PS3 (played it on PS now).
Shitty graphics, horrible, antiquated, and really grindy dungeon crawl mechanics, and yet I still really enjoyed it.
3 of the best games i played in last years have really shitty visuals, factorio (snes graphics) kerbal (ps2 level 3d vsuals) and PUBG (good but far far behind shoothers like BF1) other GOTY deserving games like overcooked, Inside and grow home also dont have any impressive visuals, and im still a graphics whore
As mentioned already, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze should go down as one of the worst reviews in Gamespot history.
Gamespot gave Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze a 6/10
It's pretty crazy especially considering the number of people who rave about it being one of the greatest platformers ever created. People who analyze level design and pay attention to incredible detail know how mind-bogglingly impressive Retro Studio's work here is.
Oh wow, how did I forget this. Yeah this would definitely be my choice. Tropical Freeze was one of my favorite games of the 8th gen and was one of the best platformers I've played, only getting beat out by Shovel Knight for me.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Looved this game
Best melee gameplay in any game I've ever played.. I remember playing the demo a lot because of this, but I got dissapointed in the whole game. I'd give it a 7 or something.
I can't think of any game that's lower than 6 that I really liked, but Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze comes to mind. A really, really good game deserving of a 9, that GameSpot were weird enough to give a 6. I guess the person playing really sucked at it or something, because the complaints make zero sense.
I knew I liked you, and appreciating the Melee gameplay just sealed the deal, lol. I do normally suspect with some poor reviews, that sometimes the reviewer just doesn't have the skill to playing the game they are reviewing properly. Sort of like everyone freaking out over Crash Bandicoot.
Not less than a 6.0 but Mario Kart 64 (6.4) wtf, and Legend of Dragoon (6.4) come to mind. Awesome games.
Mario Kart 64 got 6.4? I had no idea.
Reviewer probably got hit by a few too many blue shells.
Ironically no blue shells until Double Dash on Gamecube.

Mario Kart 64 definitely had blue shells.

Brain fart. It didn't have flying blue shells...
@sonic_spark: Wiki says the blue shells orginated in mario kart 64. Weird.
Oh I get it. "Flying blue shells".

I can't say I ever much cared for Mario Kart 64 or Super Circuit, but to give those games some credit, the blue shell was was definitely the best handled in both those games. For one, they didn;t pop up anywhere near as frequently, and secondly the wouldn't just target specifically who was in first, but knock into anyone in front of the person who threw it.
Really wish they'd design it that way again.
Dragon Valor (PS1) - 5.6
Criminally underrated arcade-style action-RPG from Namco, a sequel to their 1984 arcade action/RPG/platformer Dragon Buster. Dragon Valor's hack & slash gameplay was a lot of fun, almost like an evolution of Golden Axe, with platforming, puzzles, RPG elements and non-linear storytelling. And it had an interesting branching system, where your actions lead to the game branching out into multiple different storylines, levels and endings. The soundtrack was also really good, with some great action music.
It got low scores for several reasons. The 3D graphics were sub-par even for its time. And despite having 3D graphics, it played more like a 2D side-scrolling game, in an era that was moving towards 3D first/third-person gameplay. It also wasn't very long, like an arcade game, but had plenty of replay value with the branching system.
I'm enjoying Prey. It's like a high-tech Fallout.
Is it now? I might just have to check it out.
Not so much in story. But the gameplay mechanics and scavenging are very similar.
Reviews were not good, but everyone I know that actually played it loves it. I hope get to it eventually.
Fantasia on the Mega Drive. It was badly made, and the collision detection was woeful. That said I liked the classical music and the settings and back in those days if I got a game I made the most of it so I got in to it.
@Yams1980: Yeah, that sounds like Steve Ballmer scoffing at the first Iphone, saying nobody would pay that much for a phone.
Risen 3 got 5.2 from IGN (7 on here) and I really liked it but I like all the Risen games. You go into them knowing they are Euro janky with weird graphics and totally 'out there' storylines but you love them anyway, if you're me.
