Natal is pretty much useless until MS fixes it.

The chip, which was responsible for processing information for the Natal's 'bone system,' has been removed in favour of a software solution.

However, development sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that the change doesn't have an effect on the existing system lag of about 100ms, while a software solution should enable Microsoft to update the system more quickly and regularly than a hardware solution, meanwhile hitting a previously-speculated price point of sub-USD 50/GBP 50 - although this price rumour has already been scotched by Microsoft's Neil Thompson.

thats about the lag we see with eye toy games...which will likely be what we see with the wands since they use the eye toy camera.

you dont have much here, as much as i dislike natal now with its removal of the processor you still have nothing on the sony side which is the side your fighting for.

It's not going to be lagfree, it needs to actually detect and process your movements while basically syncing them up with onscreen movements... at least, that's what I assume. I'm sure 100ms isn't something that the engineers at MS decided on, it's probably an unfortunate side-effect of the technology.

Sony's so called "wand" is lag free. 1-1 ratio. Don't believe me, watch the demonstrations.

100ms is not bad. I play with 150-200ms constantly online and I compete fine, although when it goes over 150 I notice it.

It would be quite stupid if you executed a movement and it wouldn't immediately be shown onscreen.

Yeah.. he just wants to bash it before it's even released. The 100ms lag will be very minimal. It won't effect game play. He's just grasping at straws with this argument.

I was under the impression that 1:1 referred to the accuracy of the representation as opposed to the measure of latency between the action and the onscreen representation. I.E. each movement of 1 is accurately represented as 1 movement onscreen. In that sense, Natal is 1:1, it just has latency.

Take your fake PSN card and get out of here.

xX-Incubus-Xx

How is his PSN Card fake? He has several trophies, more then i have anyways

On-Topic. 100ms isn't going to effect gameplay much. Obviously it'd be better with minimal lag, but 100ms is not bad at all.

Also, what did this chip that they've taken out do? I assume they took it out to reduce the price to impulse levels.

so a 1/10 of a second lag. That's a decent length lag for motion controls.

indeed, 100ms is still very much playbable. however if they could get it down to 60-75, that would be great.

Espada12
Everything is processed locally on computer games, the only thing that really is an issue online is your shot registration because that's where the server is processing the data and sending your system the information on what shots registered, etc. But there's also lag compensation to some extent in all online games, i.e. hit boxes are kept in a backlog on the server so that they can cross reference it with the player that fired the shot's locally tracked location to determine if the shot registered on the client's end. Unless I'm misunderstanding that.

100ms is actually pretty bad lag, but i guess Natal needs the lag to read the movements or something.

can somebody explain what this "100ms of lag" means to me?

i find it hard to believe that game like burnout paradise where nothing is being rendered on behalf of the actual person has the same amount of lag as ricochet in which an actual silouette of the person not only has to be rendered but properly animated too, theyre not even rendering your car in the burnout paradise demo, its just a first person view

As stated a 1/10 of a second of lag isn't all that bad but it could be improved minimally. Not that bad.

100ms lag means. You move your arm left indicating you want to move the menu to the left, the screen waits 0.1 seconds, and then does the action. That's the simplest explanation.

100 ms isn't anything horrible but could affect gameplay slightly. It still should be reduced before NATAL hits the market.

Well this pretty much seals the deal for Nathal for Online FPS.

Most people seem to think only the highest ms effects their game or like to compare it to the lag they have in their personal online sessions. However that's not how it works, you need to add them. From your Controller to your System, and from your System to the Server. So let's say your ping is 150ms and Nathal adds another 100ms, that's 250ms. That's quite significant.

Actually, alot of people already pointed this out after seeing the E3 presentation. Unlike the PS3Wand which looked ridiculous but seemed to work perfectly fine.

Oh I thought it was the action > movement part on screen not that actual input. Online it's the shot > hitbox time so I was thinking along the same lines.

For what natal is trying to accomplish, 100 ms is horrendous. That's .1 seconds...way too much for a fast paced game.
