The keyboard will be replaced one day. Change will happen it just a matter of when don't be afraid of it. HarlockJC

i really can't see what could replace the keyboard. short of mind control, everything else would be impractical or just plain suck. i couldn't be bothered doing simple things like a message on gamespot through voice control and a touch interface will just be a keyboard without physical buttons.

The keyboard has shown to be both practical and universally easy to use. it has so many possibilities that other technologies that we currently have can't achieve.

it will be replaced but i'll probably be dead by time they come up with something better than a keyboard to replace it. i think mind control is the best way to go right now, it's just how it will be done.

I think it will be more of a combo that will replace it. Motion, touchscreen, and voice commands there has to be a way to move past something we have been using for 30+ years.

the thing about PC gaming is that most PCs are in an office/study type enviroenment. so what controllers will work well in that enviroenment? i dont see motion controls ala the wiimote getting any traction on the PC (though the PC does support wiimote controls with the right mods :P). i also dont see a traditonal controller getting any significant traction on the PC (certainly not enough where devs simply drop mouse and keyboard support) however i do think natal does have merit on the PC. there is already a device that picks up head movement (track IR i think its called) which could be very handy in games. the basic example is being able to shoot/move in one direction while being able to look in another. its also great for simulators apparently. i havent tried it myself but reviews for the device seem very positive. natal could easily do the same thing and im sure devs could think of more uses for it on the PC. i also think the keyboard on the PC needs to be replaced as far as games are concerned. its great in some areas (lots of commands) but limited in others (its only keys). i would love to see the keyboard replaced by a big touch screen that devs could basically put anythign on. they could use it as a second screen for displaying visuals. in a RTS it could be used to build things without colttering up the main screen. just touch the icon of the unit you want to build. think the DS.....but crazier and with more possibilities. games these days dont need 250 odd keys...a few well placed icons and giving the player and developer the ability to customise their keyboard to the Nth degree would be great imho. i dont see any point in replacing the mouse as a concept. its perfect for the PC enviroenment. as a pointing device it has and will put anything else you can throw at it to the sword. as for natal coming to the PC.....thanks MS. any chance of a few games to..yknow..tempt the punter? no? whats PC gaming you ask? get a 360 if you want to play games you say? i already have one thanks. so thats a no then on the PC games for natal MS? righto...just thought id ask on the off chance.

What else isn't a 360 exclusive? The subname "360?" lol wow...That's like saying Blu Ray isn't exclusive to the PS3.

Anywho, I really want to try Natal out.

DeadMagazines

That's a good way to put it, with the BluRay. But cows will still cower behind the PC and say "BU BU WE CAN USE NATAL ON PC"

that's what they think ,but they don't realise the irony is that they are contributing to Project Natal's success.

Who do they think will stand to benefit from this???

Windows users which there are more then all other game console platforms combined.

Xbox360 users who are anticipating Project Natal (including your true) and has been polled as the most talked about thing since E3

who else knows. It could even be adopted by TV manufacturers, businesses, entertainment centres.

first of all this is the same silly argument naysayers have been pushing that it would replace the Xbox360 controllers. It isn't.

It is another way of interaction and can be a further enhancement to the already current conventional Xbox360 controller and Keyboard and Mouse.

Project Natal doesn't really need games on the PC to be successful, the Xbox360 is for that.

The applications for it can be applied to businesses, public venues, entertainment hotspots, military, TV manufacturers who knows what other industries.

Do you understand?

You see there may be a lot of naysayers here and they can find a way to nitpick, but in reality there are more actual nonbiased gamers, PC users and general public who will no doubt be impressed by Project Natal and find many other uses for it.

Let Naysayers stick to what they know while the rest of the wolrd moves on and progresses with the technology, but everyone has to admit that this is a very very smart move by Micrososft. Project Natal will have huge exposure now!!!!!

don't forget there millions of PCs everywhere in offices, military, public places and entertainment venues.

Project Natal has a chance of being used in many of those places. and don't forget of course PCs at home and the XBox360. FTW

Microsoft's Bill Gates has pretty much confirmed that Xbox's Project Natal tech is heading to PC. In an interview with CNET, the Windows man said the peripheral is not just for games, but for "media consumption as a whole." He states that both the Xbox and Windows divisions have latched on to the technology.

Beyond the home media applications, Gates also mentions using it in the office. He doesn't say Office use, but lower case "office." Looks like the era of Minorty Report is upon us. Now all we need are three people who look like shaved cats to lie in tubs of goo all day and we'll be set for the future.wv06

You do realize that he was mentioning in reference to office applications, like interacting with word / excel in 3d space and that sort of thing, right?

Two different applications of the same technology. Yet they're aimed at completely different markets.

This would be like lemmings trying to claim ownage over BluRay not being exclusive to the PS3. Heck, on the hardware side of things, the PS3's GPU is not exclusive to it. It's not the hardware, but the implementation of it that is exclusive.

Didn't this technology come from the PC anyway? It's like saying the DS touch screen is not exclusive since phones, computers, and ipods have them. :|

yes, but not as refined as Project Natal, endorsed by Microsoft and more recognised.

In order for techology to be successful it has to e

Userfriendly

Have a lot of support ie. software, hardware

brand recognition and reputation- Microsoft (we can debate reputation but this is Microsoft Windows and is used by millions and is well known)

Price( I bet the farm that Microsoft will market this baby to hell and back and price well enough to make sure many have it)

and anyway this is in no way not hamper the Xbox360. Microsoft benefits, Windows users who want extra functionality benefits, Xbox360 gamers benefit, everyone benefits.......except hardcore Cow fanboys.

is this really a big deal? honestly and truthfully its not. its microsoft there not just a gaming company. xbox360isgr8t

but there Xbox360 is a gaming machine it's doing well.

Project Natal on the Xbox360 and Windows???

I definately reckon this is a bigdeal. How many general PC users know about Project Natal? This is simply exposure on a Windows platform.

This will help MS move Project Natal, and heavan forbid that if MS were to encourage general PC users to recognise to really game with Project Natal is on the Xbox360 after trying its ease of use this will make the Xbox360 even more attractive. But we know Microsoft are not that business saavy right?:P

ha ha ha. What some people have failed to realise is that a lot of things are not exclusive to the Xbox360, but it hasn't really hampered it's success.

This will actually make Xbox360 even more attractive to consumers now.

It would be interesting to see what third party developers on PCs as well as developers like VLC, Firefox, google Chrome and all other devs can do with Natal.

I just hope that MS doesn't close of Project Natal too much so that many mods can be used or something with it later on down the road.

It's funny. I just read this entire thread, and didn't find a single PS3 fan trying to bash this development... but you see a whole bunch of 360 fanboys jumping up in defense at the term multiplat without anyone to argue with. You guys get so sensitive sometimes.... Anyhow, it's an interesting development, and one that bodes well for NATAL's success. Only a massive amount of of penetration into the market is gonna turn NATAL into a bonafide new interface, instead of some forgotten gimmick. This just further illustrates how committed MS is to developing this technology to the fullest. And I have to say, I'm impressed. NATAL just might end up making a real effect on the way we interface with our entertainment and information, and that would be no mean feat.

The PC already have touch screen capability so I think it would just be a fitting progression to use this Natal technology as an application.

gago-gago

Yah, but I figure they'll use in as such: You project an image from a computer onto a projector screen, and you can use the Natal tech to do stuff with it.

Great for schools, office meetings, etc. Good way to keep Windows flowing amongst everyone.

Now all we need are three people who look like shaved cats to lie in tubs of goo all day and we'll be set for the future.

Erm, Microsoft PowerPoint and Windows Media Centre... For Windows login, my ASUS laptop has a camera, face recognition and face tracking.

When has Natal been exclusive to 360, you know MS could easily use it on PC, right?

Looks like all systems but handhelds will have motion control this gen...

If Natal can function as a TV remote too, then it is the best thing ever, no more looking for the remote would be really nice... soon everything will be like the stuff in iRobot... uh oh.

360 and PC are a unified system. They can communicate with each other. They shouldn't be counted separately.

Well I have said it a dozen times before that Natal is a cool new interface not a gameing property, it only makes sense to be on the PC more so than the 360.

My PS3 can communicate with my PC. What does this have to do with anything?

Anyway, this is where i think the tech belongs, used for scrolling menus and turning stuff on

Is this the end of the television remote control?

Yeah tell that to someone who trys to play Crysis on their 360 or Forza 2 on their PC. People using this argument are just trying to bolster the 360s poor overall library.

[QUOTE="Nonstop-Madness"][QUOTE="Danm_999"][QUOTE="Nonstop-Madness"] Do you know what hardware means ? seriously no hardware is exclusive.

Did you make a typo initially then?

no, Im just saying its ridiculous to say that a piece of hardware is exclusive or not exclusive. He's logic = Blu-Ray isnt PS3 exclusive cause PC can have Blu-Ray. Are people actually going to say that ? It would be really really dumb.

Has anyone really claimed Blu-Ray as an exclusive for the PS3? No, not really...Blu ray games on the other hand. Chances are that if NATAL ends up on both platforms every single NATAL game will end up on the PC as well, why waste resources doing otherwise? So it's easy for cows to lap this up for future ownage...even though I forsee NATAL games being thoroughly panned by critics at least in the early stages of development .

Native support for "media extension" Xbox 360 device on MCE enabled PC. Native support for Xbox 360 controllers on Windows Vista/7 based PC. Both platforms includes DirectX based middleware. Unified development platform for "Games For Windows" and Xbox 360. Xbox 360(player), Mobile Windows (hand helds), Windows CE (consumer electronics) are all windows based devices. Windows based PC is at the center of this ecosystem.

Both Xbox 360 and Games For Windows shares Xinput APIs.

what this has to do is enforce the idea that Microsoft Windows and Xbox360 are more symbiotic then say the rival console PS3.

Xbox360 is a proper media extender to Windows and share many things in common and has many features that PS3 doesn't. It is so obvious where Microsoft's biggest goal is. The services between Windows PC's, Xbox consoles, Zune, Mobile 7 will all be very fluid with one another and then we have Project Natal.

Naysayers simply dismiss this as a gimmick and think it will fail with out giving it proper scrutiny and analysis.

1. Microsoft Windows team and the Xbox360 team both wanted this on their respective platforms.

These two teams will obviously benefit each other and provide very compelling ways of using Project Natal across these two platforms. Creating some sort of exlcusive relationship i.e. better communications between the Xbox360 Project Natal and Windows PC Project Natal. They can do what ever they want between the two and if they see many exclusive advantages they will do it,

It has always been Microsoft's strategy to unify many services, applications and hardware under a one recognised brand. Games for Windows Live, Live aware, Xbox Live, and Zune and Mobile 7 how will this be done? few people know But it will all eventually be unified as a kind of Microsoft "ecosystem" spanning games consoles, portable devices- Zune, Mobile 7, and of course PC with Windows playing a big role.

Xbox360 is the trojan horse for Microsoft in the Living room and they can use the PC as leverage.

Some people fail to realise as well, Microsoft knows that PC and Xbox360 share games but that has also created an exclusive relationship and recognition between the two

. You see fanboys simply saying oh I'll get it for PC instead, but yet those games still sell quite well on the Xbox360. Fanboys and hardcore are a very small group comnpared to the gaming population, they just happen to be the loudest tha's all. Your everyday Joe will see Project Natal think it is something so different recognise that it is on Windows PCs and "Hey, I can also play this on consoles" Which console has that? The Xbox360 that's which one.

If this relationship didn't exist it would really hamper games seling on the Xbox360. Microsoft isn't that stupid. Xbox360s and PCs. A lot of people-bar Fanboys will recognise this relationship.

"Hey Project Natal has a some very useful functions when I make presentations for my corporate clients."

"This interface is easy for me to use for simple functions when Im', away from my keyboard"

Lecturers at Universisties and schools can use Project Natal for interacting with big screens on the wall by simply using waving their hands.

It is obvious Microsoft have invested a lot of resources into this project since '07 and are shifting The Xbox360 skus for and likening it to a console launch!!.

We know Microsoft have spent huge amounts of money getting major products into people's mindsets.

You reckon Halo 3's marketting was big? I bet the farm the Marketing for Project Natal will be even bigger knowing that it will also be on Windows PCs.

The office is essentially theirs. The lounge room is there next target and they will take over the lounge room with the help of leveraging from Windows.

Xbox360 and Windows PCs are not in dorect competition with each other. Far from it they have a relationship that compliments each other.

beat me to it, but we both see the big "Ecosystem" strategy from Microsoft.;)

non-sense. You think it's poor but we have had this arguement many times before about wich library has more AAAs, Aa etc. and Multiplatforms are more popular on the Xbox360. Microsoft have recently devoted creating a development tool to get more out of the Xbox360 as a the Unreal Engine was good but did not really take advanatage of the Xbox360s perks. Forza is under the Microsoft banner and of course PCs can be able to play Forza 2 so that's not really an issue.

From a logical conclusion Microsoft allowed Halo 1, 2 Gears of War to be developed on PC to give PC gamers a taste of the franchise. Encouraging them to get the next installements on the Xbox360 if they want it sooner, either way get it on PC-MS still benefits and this just further re-enforces their relationship between the Xbox360 and Windows PCs.

Yeah I've been pushing that idea and it's similarites and hopefully it's potential to do just that.

I am more exited in the menu interactions and gesture conventions, as I believe this can be applied to not just games but of course businessess like MS Powerpoint presentations, Media Center, Word for dictations, rifling through files in Windows Explorer and general use.

Then of course Games, but that's where the Xbox360 comes in and Microsoft did send those dev kits since E3. Programmers hopefully should get the proper support form Microsoft to keep imrpoving their coding.

Meh.

Couldn't care less if it's exclusive or not.
