Microsoft has revealed exactly how much space you'll need to clear in order to play Project Natal games.

That's according toTechflash, which says the disclosure was made during a press event led by chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie.

"To be precise, you'll want to clear an area extending at least 4 meters (a little more than 13 feet) away from the television. That's the back edge of the space to be taken into account by the Natal sensors," Techflash reports.

"In terms of width and height, the field of vision naturally expands as it moves from the Natal device to that back edge, ending up a little more than 4 meters wide and 2.7 meters high (about 8 feet, 10 inches)."

AsKotakupoints out, the news has led some reporters to question whether there will be enough space to accommodate Natal in Japanese homes. Is your lounge big enough?

So you don't have to stand that far, it's just that everything has to be cleared?

I dont mind that its 4 meters away (though that is a long distance) I do mind that you have to clear everything.... That is incredible stupid imo.... No chairs? tables? Desks? Anything?

They really should clear this up.

Haha if true, it's epic fail. I have just enough space between my couch and tv to fit a computer chair (cause my tv is on a computer desk duh).

looks like those who has their 360 inside their tiny little bedroom will now be moving it out to their living room in order to play it. another alternative is to remodel your home by breaking down the walls, move your bed to the garage, or move your tv to the backyard. natal has failure written all over it and will sell worst than the eyetoy.

They're both terrible ideas to be investing so much money into. If the sony thing is 1:1 movement, then you're going to need a lot of space for that as well.

This isn't good news, especially revealing this kind of bad news after the positive PS Move demonstrations...bad momentum strategy.

We should wait until E3 to make any definitive declarations, however, I will break down a few points just in case this is legit.

For those of you that have no idea what 4 metres actually is (Fellow American perhaps? :P )

There are 3.2808 Feet in a Metre / Meter. So 4*3.2808 = 13.1232

13.1232ft = 4m
1ft = 0.3048m

So, about 4 Meters = 13 feet, 1.5 inches.

Now go look at your livingroom, or even other rooms at your place. You decide.

There are those that aren't going to buy it anyways, but for those interested, but lack space...

...This is just bad news.

Even 2 meters is a significant amount of space, but 4!? That's absurd.

Haha 4 back from TV, 4 wide, and nearly 3 tall!? That better be the "max" rather than "recommended", because if not Natal is ****ed.

Ah but early this gen a lot of people complained about flailing your arms around with the Wii remote which takes up the space of your arms length, so 2m is a lot for some people.

My house is around 2400 ft2 and my living room still doesn't have that much space from the TV to the couches. Including the large coffee table we also have set up, there's just no way.

Sorry MS, but I supported your console when I bought a second Xbox 360 (RROD), but I'm not re-arranging my house for you.

Not really a big deal, all devs have to do is only make their games track the upper body. Natal wont work as advertise for everybody, but it still can work.

Natal really needs a wii like controller, I have been saying this in every natal related thread now.

I'm thinking Natal is a gimmick that will be good for some games but most games will still use the traditional controller.

I have room (live in a bachelor suite that my Uni helps me pay for) but that is ridiculous. So when I've got company over there is going to be a 4x4m empty space for my living room? I will look cheap and my condo will look unappealing. I'm currently single but assuming I get into a relationship with a women who is an unofficial interior designer (not to be sexist but at least from my experience all the girls I dated while having this place redesigned it to their liking) will be turned off by my lack of style sense. What justification for this blank space do I have? That I can throw a ball virtually? This is a product I'm definitely not investing in until revisions to the soft/hardware are made.

Same as, i have an apartment that's not small, but 13 feet would be the length of the whole sitting room empty. (Throwing sofa over the balcony, i think we have enough room now ;)).

Funny, since when anyone ever believe that advertisements are depictions of real life? At least Wii-motes don't need open empty space of 4 meters to be effective. Come to think of it, maybe that's the reason why Nintendo rejected the Natal.

No one has brought up the issue that the size of your TV or HDTV is dependant to 4m viewing. I can't imagine playing on a 22" 13' away.

wtf, 13 feet? Just what room does MS expect people to be playing this new tech? All my room in my house are like 12 to 13 feet by 10 to 12. So basically to play your games you need to clear out an entire room? Wow, they really didn't think this through if I have to clear everything out.

Seriously though, this has to be some kind mistake. They can't actually need 13 feet of space cleared out to play this. Bill Gates or who ever is making the decisions at X360 headquarters isn't this ignorant. They do realize that a good portion of their base probably play in their bedroom that is probably 10X10 or 12X12. Is MS that full of themselves they think people will dedicate an entire room for motion controls?

So unless you have a big living room or you game in your basement. Natal will be pointless. I can't see myself being 13' away from a TV. Thats over double the max of what you should be from a 32". I guess MS didn't take in consideration all of the people that are in dorms and bedrooms.

My living room is like 10X18 but the problem with the 18 is that one side is french doors out to a balcony and the other side is where the breakfeast bar and opening to the dining room is and both don't have connections for cable on those walls. I mean this just won't work for me as I'm currently only about 6 feet from my big 55 inch tv with a coffee table in front of it. I would have to rent out space to just play Natal. If this is true than I can't see this working very well.
