Natal won't be for the hardcore. It's aimed for the casuals.

This will entirely depend on the games. Depending on pricing and whether or not there are at least one or two titles that I would be interested in playing with Natal I will probably be making a purchase. I dont even care too much about the implications for gaming. I want to be able to pull minority report like stuff while sitting on my sofa.

As is Move.

You think Sony and MS would try to tap into a market they already had? No. They'll both be going after the Wii fanbase

What made the Wii a success? The hardcore? NO.

Microsoft already has the hardcore. They want Nintendo's share.

I think Sony's Move is already going to fail. Who wants to play Socom with move. I know I don't and none of my friends either. Sony is offering move controls for the hardcore which is the wrong market.

bingo....why go for what you already have when that won't expand your companies profit line. MS and Sony REALLY need to put some focus on the casual market and modeling their approach AFTER Nintendos' is the best way to do so. Follow the leader, not leap frog.

Exactly.

I mean, Sony even laugh about the Wii, but now they want a piece of cake too.

If it is done right (like MP3 and the MP: Trilogy) Move controls for Socom could be down right incredible. I wouldn't brush it off yet because Nintendo has proven that motion controls can work EXTREMELY well and Move looks to be better then the Wii's current limitations (sry, but Wii motion + isn't really that impressive)..

Well... That was kind of obvious.

Whilst it does have the ability to cater toward "hardcore" gamers with an optional control scheme, it is a blatent attempt to enter a *huge* potential market.

I find both of these breaking stories much more surprising then the announcement of motion controls selling more with "casual" players. Its common sense really... as long as one believes in the terms casual and hardcore. I don't think I really do.

Natal, Wii's waggle and Wand is all casual garbo fest. Gaming would've been better on Wii if it wasn't of its casual motion controls focus.

Casual play once or twice a week, games that take no skill or effort to play and have no learning curve.

Sorry that is not MW2's, Gear's or Uncharted's demographic you are describing.

Its your own personal play style, which is quite uncommon.

I second GeneralShowzer's sentiment. Most console gamers just don't take gaming very seriously. Some buy PS3 just for the NBA games, play only the NBA games, and spend less than 18 hours a week gaming. Clearly not hardcore in any way, shape, or form. Natal is not for such gamers. Natal is not for the kind of gamer who's satisfied with afterschool MW2 on a gimped controller scheme, or the sort of gamer who would turn his nose up at the Wii just because of the console image. No self-respecting hardcore gamer could retain his gamer cred doing that. For my part, I see great possibilities with Natal. The fact that most posters here cannot even fathom how is testament to how casual console gaming has become.

Oh ho ho! Struck a nerve, have we? I'll have you know that Uncharted 2 is VERY mainstream friendly, because of the easy control scheme and the low level of skill and challenge. My sister-in-law never plays shooters OR platformers on any format, and she liked and finished that game.

Casual games, not casual hardware. You can possibly create a hardcore game with Natal, although that will take a skillful developer

My GF has recently beaten Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age, normally she sticks to The Sims and Facebook games. That does not make them casual games with no skill or a learning curve, she had a hard time with them. What difficulty does your sister-in-law play at?

It may sound a little quaint to you youngsters, but yes. True gamers don't need to denigrate systems for imaginary faults - especially when it's related to library or demographic. That's something of more interest to company shills and corporate types. I don't make games, so I don't care. If you care that many 40 year old soccer moms happen to own the same system that you play your favorite Roguelike on, then you can't be that serious of a gamer. You can look up what a Roguelike is on Google.

Generally, easy. Mass Effect 2 is also pathetically easy. It was so easy, I couldn't bring myself to stay awake long enough to finish the Soldier campaign on Insanity. That's quite literally, too. I literally fell asleep on my keyboard playing Soldier on Insanity. Dragon Age? It's a Bioware RPG, dude. Since when have those been hard? My wife can beat ME2 missions on Casual, no prob. You barely need to touch the guys with a bullet to down them, let alone use powers. She doesn't usually play shooters, either. She usually plays stuff like MySims or CafeWorld, or Rock Band. And not for very long, either. She's really more into the Dash series. She's a little more hardcore about those.

Move and Natal will fail for 2 reasons;

They are both making a clear distinction between their hardcore and casual games, Nintendo is doing a great job of blending the 2 together.

Whatever MS and Sony comes up with this E3, Nintendo will counter at E3 2011 with Wii 2. With counter I don't mean copying and doing it slightly better (lol), no I mean they will come up with something that will overshadow what the others are trying to do.

designer: It amused me once, too. Now, not so much. It isn't the Facebook playing crowd that annoys me. They're generally genial and open-minded. It's the console fools that really get my danders up.

Gears isn't hard to get into. In fact, one of its selling points is that it's accessible. Your 87 year old grandma could probably play it, if she liked the content. MW2 as well - the selling point of such games is that they're more accessible than something truly only for the hardcore - like Nethack, for instance. The gamers you misunderstand as being "noobs" generally don't get into GoW not because it's hard, but because the content is turning them off.
