Naughty Dog beats Retro Studios in some aspects, and retro studios beats Naughty Dog in some aspects.
Naughty Dog offers better characters and are masters of set piece design. Retro Studios offers better level design and know game design really well.
Personally, I couldnt stand the uncharted series. No seriously, I utterly hated what little I played of the games. Quite possibly the worst experience I ever had in gaming.
In the end of the day, Retro is still using Ninty's franchises.
On the other hand, ND creates their own. It's not everyday you see a platformer/kart racer standing toe-to-toe against the Mario franchise (Crash 3 and CTR)
I would have to say Retro just because I havn't been disapointed with anything from them yet like I have with Naughty Dog, even if it was just one game
Uhh. Metroid Prime 1 and 2 are far better than anything Naughty Dog has made. However, MP3 and DKCR aren't better than Naughty Dog's best, and those are Retro's most recent titles. Here's what I'm going to say:
Metroid Prime 1&2>>>(large gap)>>>Jak series>Uncharted 2>>DKCR>>MP3>>>(large gap)>>>Crash Series>U3>(largest gap)>U1
They are pretty even if you ask me. I'll say Naughty Dog I guess though. Just because they release games more often, have been around longer and that the Last of Us looks like it might actually be in that area between Metroid Prime and Jak.
I thought this would be one of those Nintendo dev IP's dick-riding that goes on where the other dev doesn't get a vote until about 20 posts in. That being said, ND, because I haven't played any of Retro's what looks like excellent work.
Retro easily. Uncharted is the first Naughty Dog game I've enjoyed at all, and even then I haven't found any of the Uncharteds all that great. Retro, on the other hand, hasn't produced anything other than pure masterpieces.
Retro by the widest margin imaginable. Retro games have game play. Uncharted is just cutscenes, automated platforming, stop and pop shooting, QTEs, and scripted set pieces. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum.
Retro. No ND game has made as big of a lasting impression on me as Metroid Prime. That being said, ND is a top tier developer and the best Sony has, they do great work.
I haven't touched Uncharted, but cinematic games with minimal gameplay are not exactly my cup of tea. Taking Crash and Jak & Daxter into consideration...pretty damn good. But then Retro just gave us DKC: Returns. Then there's the Metroid Prime trilogy...yeah, gotta go with Retro. Yes, Naughty Dog brings original IP's, but Retro absolutely wins for gameplay and level design.
