As development for PlayStation 4 gears up, Naughty Dog has expressed its concerns about the transition to Sony's next system. In a new interview, studio co-president Evan Wells explains that moving to new hardware is a "double-edged sword."

"The geek inside you is always excited about a shiny new toy, but then the practicality of it starts to set in: this is going to be a lot of hard work," Wells told Eurogamer. "When you're going to new technology, every day is a slog, progress is slow and it really takes a different kind of attitude and mentality to get through that kind of push and it's not right for everybody."

Wells described the transition period between PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 as "the period that Naughty Dog had its darkest days and we lost people on a weekly basis. People just couldn't get through it."

Co-president Christophe Balestra shared the same view, calling development for new systems "terrifying." "We made some mistakes with our move from PS2 to PS3," he said, "and we won't make those again. I guess we've done it a couple of times!"

Last week, it was confirmed that Naughty Dog has split into two teams. While one team is working on The Last of Us, Wells isn't ready to reveal what the team that developed Uncharted 3 will be working on next.

"Right now they're not working that much. Some of them are working mainly on DLC for multiplayer, and a lot of them are on vacation," he said. "I think the team's going to regroup and we're going to figure out what's going to be the next move for that team. Next-gen, current-gen - that's totally in the air."

So what you guys think? The PS4 will be announced in E3 2012?

I ain't no developer, but changing to a new piece of hardware while being very comfortable with the current hardware might sound a bit daunting :/ I mean, look how the PS3 started with 3rd party developers.

I like how open they are with working on game for PS4 right now. I thought they usually tried to keep this stuff a secret, but I guess its a certainty there's work going on for PS4, and the PS4 is in a late enough stage that games are being made for it.

Or so I assume, either way this is some good news. Hopefully its got Backwards compatibility, I no longer have a PS2 or my old phatty PS3, so it would be nice to play all my old PS2 games, especially since I don't see them all getting an HD collection.

Perhaps on the PS4 Uncharted will finaly look like it does in the cut-scenes. I don't see much improvement or progression in gameplay terms tho (unless they make a fully open-world Uncharted game which is unlikely).

Well they didn't said anything about working right now, but they are afraid of start working with it because of the things that happen when they start working in the PS3.

But What i liked about the article, is that they said they are not making the same mistakes again.

a few PC games allready look better than UC's cutscenes

so they most likely will pull it off, depending on the PS4's hardware

Backwards compatible with the PS3? It's likely that the PS4 will be, that is if it will indeed use an updated version of the Cell BE.

As for PS2 backwards compatibility, I highly doubt it. Especially since Sony launched the "PS2 Classics" on PSN.

Sony simply needs to make a machine thats easier to code for, thats something microsoft definitely got right this gen. Make a console easier to develop on with the right hardware and assets and game dev's want to make games for it.... hmmmm, imagine that.

I'm imagining ps4 running games of "the samaritan" graphical quality, remember it's still a couple years away.

I don't know, PS2 has a HUGE amount of games and I think releasing it without BC would be a d*** move for fans and forcing them to shell out for digital PSN copies and HD collections, especially since I used to go on Ebay and get amazing cheap old PS2 games to keep my PS3 useful during a down season in gaming (like summers).

Also I swear, that quote sounds like a giveaway on PS4's creation. Aside from the rumors of it being made, everyone expects a PS4 and Xbox 720 by 2013, so I wouldn't be surprised if they unveiled it next E3 and are just working on the design and getting games for it right now.

Naughty Dog has 2 years to get ready. PS4 won't be ready until 2014. Sony will be the last to launch in the 8th Generation of consoles.

Usually at the beginning of a generation is when the games are the strongest and prettiest for a console, Metal Gear Solid 2 was the single prettiest game on any platform in the year of 2001 (and also ran spectacularly smooth at 60fps if I remember right), and Gears was pretty much unmatched for a couple of years in pure beauty and power.

I think Metro 2033 at 1080p and 60fps should be childs play for consoles once the start of the next gen comes around, hopefully they don't neglect resolution and framerate just to go for a beefier game in graphics.

Sony said they don't plan on doing that, so that's good. They aren't pushing a new medium like Blu Ray, so it shouldn't be any pricier then the 360 unless they try to get a meaty GPU to go with the Cell this time (and they really don't, since I think just having a GPU similar to the 360's is enough for the cell to go the rest of the way).

They want to both release at the same time or earlier as the 720 and not be $600 at launch, so that's good.

agree about MGS2, thats mainly because PC was alot smaller back then and people just didnt have powerful PC's, Doom 3 and HL2 made the push to get people to actually upgrade

but big no for Gears, HL2, Doom 3 and FEAR looked better

Gears has a terrible art style aswell, lol brown and bloom, so much god damn brown, with color it could have actually looked amazing

If a single shift in hardware causes them this many problems I could only imagine what developing for the PC would do to the company.

The PS4 would have to have over $600 of hardware to pull that off. And I don't think Sony will make the same mistake of selling an $800 console for $600, like they did with the PS3.

This gen's visuals in 1920x1080 @ 30fps or 1600x900 @ 60fps with more AF and AA would suffice for most games on next gen consoles.

Yes, Sony likes to cater to the core crowd, but they also want to make money in the process. And competing with current PC hardware is not the way to go about that.

not really, Metro 2033 is unoptimized, i can max it out in DX 9 with some tweaks (actually putting on v-sync and increasing the FOV increases your fps... lol) and get 60fps, but in firefights i fall down to 40, which is fine, but that train level, my god i drop down to like 15fps, god damnit

ND know how to abuse the power of smoke and mirrors

they could run Metro 2033 in 1080p with MLAA at 60fps no probs

take away advanced DOF and tessalation, it will run fine, thats if the PS4 has something like a GTX 460 and like 3gigs of DDR3 ram, for a CPU? TEH SUPER PERFECT CELL AT OVER 9000GHZ or something stupid sony chuck in that all devs except ND & GG have no idea how to use

Upgraded Cell + nvidia GeForce GTX 560 ti + 2 gigs of RAM should suffice for 1080p gaming at solid framerates and solid AA and AF. The games would look like upgraded PS3 games and that's probably what Sony's aiming for anyway.

IS anybody else not the excited for a new console? Think about this. In the ps2/xbox era games only took one year to be completed

In this generation every game takes 2 years to be completed. Games as they evolve only take more & more time. If you want to see better games & better visuals then more time will be need

Next generation games will take 3 years to be completed. Didnt anybody else realize this. We wont see anything from the Uncharted 3 team for at least 3 years & then 3 years after that

Every dev is going to be releasing one game every 3 years.

The library of games for each generation gets significantly smaller. For the 1st few years of all the new consoles there wont be much if anything to play.

Oh BTW some games like Elder scrolls Skyrim take 3 years as of right now. Next gen a game like fallout 4 could take 4 years. If Fallout 4 is released on next gen system i gurantee we wont be seeing anything from bethesda for another 4 years. Im calling it right now.

So what they suggest... Stack to same graphic engines and same hardware for 10years++ just because is the easiest way to make $$? I dont get it.... If they are hating transitions so much , go PC mode. If not then stop whining and work hard. Its that easy

So is sony going to purposely make their system difficult to design for again? Remember(can't remember name, to lazy to link) when sony admitted to purposely making the system hard to program for, so devs would have to work for years to max it out. A quote a long the lines of "if you make it easy to program, what will the devs spend the next 6 years doing?!" believe it or not, its serious comment from them.. - What would devs had done for the past 6 years? Have more time to make games, thats what. I couldn't conceive of sony doing this again, but hey they are sony, they know best... right?? ;)

if Sony waits for Nvidia's Maxwell gpu in 2013, then anything is possible.

Nvidia's Maxwell is going to be a complete new architecture with total new design.

Im calling it right now.

brucecambell

better graphics doesnt mean it takes longer to make the game

most of that stuff is handled by the engine

there wont be a problem making games next gen, PC is allready in next gen with a few games

So what they suggest... Stack to same graphic engines and same hardware for 10years++ just because is the easiest way to make $$? I dont get it.... If they are hating transitions so much , go PC mode. If not then stop whining and work hard. Its that easyAzatiS

Actually they could easily keep using the same graphics engines. They would just have to upgrade the graphics and you can already see in many console games' cut-scenes that much better graphics with the same graphics engine would be totaly possible (and viable).

doesnt matter, it will just gain a 10 maybe 20 percent boost, they change up the architecture and stuff all the time, AMD's new gpu's coming out late this month have a whole new cooling method, which will come in handy for the next xbox ;)

UC3 graphics are meh dude

if PS4 is strong enough, it can pull off Metro 2033 level graphics in 1080p/4xaa at 60fps

we shall see

nameless12345

The PS4 would have to have over $600 of hardware to pull that off. And I don't think Sony will make the same mistake of selling an $800 console for $600, like they did with the PS3.

This gen's visuals in 1920x1080 @ 30fps or 1600x900 @ 60fps with more AF and AA would suffice for most games on next gen consoles.

Yes, Sony likes to cater to the core crowd, but they also want to make money in the process. And competing with current PC hardware is not the way to go about that.

Upgraded Cell + nvidia GeForce GTX 560 ti + 2 gigs of RAM should suffice for 1080p gaming at solid framerates and solid AA and AF. The games would look like upgraded PS3 games and that's probably what Sony's aiming for anyway.

or, i dont know, maybe **** the cell tech and use a simple to program for CPU.. there are many out there. The cell's uses are few and far between, as they weren't designed to be used by themselves, but rather a "piece" of a whole CPU. While its nice to sell your stuff with "mind blowing tech"(sonys words not mine), there has been no benefits for them adopting the cell in the ps3.. other than a bunch of devs complaining about it. INCLUDING naughtydog, sony's biggest current studio. If sony's OWN 1st party devs are "terrified" by the idea of having to learn new sony architecture, MAYBE just MAYBE sony should simplify next gen. Im sure devs around the world would love it.

At least they only have to develop for one console. Maybe they should just stop complaining and be thankful for that.

Well yea, they could just opt for a "normal" PowerPC CPU as well.

this, its not that hard

just grab UC3, up the resolution and textures, give it dynamic lighting and shadows, give it MSAA and AF, UC4 right there

there you go, PS4 could brute force that, work on optimizing for the next game

That's exactly what I expect UC4 to be.

Dude.

When the console first come out, they are unmatched in graphics, Metro 2033 will be so easy to run like that considering it's a current gen game. Doesn't anyone see the vast difference between xbox 1 and 360?

OB-47

Times have changed. The transition to HD and more polygons were the biggest improvements.

And looking back, last gen games still look pretty good by today's standards. And they look even better in a higher resolution.

Well DHHAAAAA!!!

No wonder the transition was a nightmare. When the entire industry is moving toward simply adding more cores to processors, Sony shoved down everyones throat the cell. While we're at it, why not putting in the console a second GPU instead of a CPU and then tell the whole world how much powerfull the console is.
The cell was never made with an artichecture ideal for multitasking like a regular CPU, no wonder the devs were living a nightmare.

The only smart thing for Sony now with the PS4 would be to dump tha cell and move on with a regular IBM, Intel, or AMD cpu.
Then the devs wouldn't any problem switching over unlike last gen, and you know what, developing multiplats would be much easier now because there wouldn't be that console with nothing in common with the other platforms. PC, Nextbox(or wathever), WII U and PS4 would ALLLLL be similar in design

Damn.. Who actually would beleive such fraud statement? In purpose difficult ?? most ridiculous thing i ever read/heard... And if this is true , which it might... This guy needs to be fired let alone take that statement for a comedy show.

I appreciate how they're being genuine. I'm sure its not easy, but everyone knows they'll pull through fine. One must wonder though, what are they currently working on?

Just slap on UE4, everything is smooth selling like Mess Effect and many other games, except crappy Too Human.magicalclick

Knowing Epic, the engine will most likely have texture pop-in. So I say "nay."

Good art-****+ HD res = still good looking game, no doubt. It's also funny how a lot of GameCube games look better than many Wii games do :)
