IS anybody else not the excited for a new console? Think about this. In the ps2/xbox era games only took one year to be completed

In this generation every game takes 2 years to be completed. Games as they evolve only take more & more time. If you want to see better games & better visuals then more time will be need

Next generation games will take 3 years to be completed. Didnt anybody else realize this. We wont see anything from the Uncharted 3 team for at least 3 years & then 3 years after that

Every dev is going to be releasing one game every 3 years.

The library of games for each generation gets significantly smaller. For the 1st few years of all the new consoles there wont be much if anything to play.

Oh BTW some games like Elder scrolls Skyrim take 3 years as of right now. Next gen a game like fallout 4 could take 4 years. If Fallout 4 is released on next gen system i gurantee we wont be seeing anything from bethesda for another 4 years. Im calling it right now.

HaloinventedFPS

better graphics doesnt mean it takes longer to make the game

most of that stuff is handled by the engine

there wont be a problem making games next gen, PC is allready in next gen with a few games

Im not saying better graphics. Im saying with each generation comes more complexity. Games are evolving & getting better. In order to make better games you need more time. Simple as that. Thats why the length in which games are made get lengthened with each generation. & graphics do slow down game development BTW

Next gen games will be made in no less than 3 years.

if Sony waits for Nvidia's Maxwellgpu in 2013, then anything is possible.

nvidia'sMaxwell is going to be a complete new architecture with total new design.

HaloinventedFPS

doesnt matter, it will just gain a 10 maybe 20 percent boost, they change up the architecture and stuff all the time, AMD's new gpu's coming out late this month have a whole new cooling method, which will come in handy for the next xbox ;)

i suggest that you do some research on Maxwell before making comments.

Nope. You cant make better games & you cant experiment in game design without time. In game development time is everything. You could spend a lifetime on one game.

Development times will only get longer my friend. Game design is a long, trial & error, time consuming process.

current consoles are fine for atleast another year or 2 but with games like crysis 2 and Bf3 consoles are so far behind.....if every day from now on out just used uncharteds, god of war, and KZ2's engine then this gen would finish strong...but tis never gonna happen so ofcourse ps4 is needed how ever i think sony is going the route of the Vita and is gonna ask devs what they want

I know they will be fine, they are one of the most respectable developers in the industry, and has the $$ of Sony to support them.

I'm more worried about the other sonystudios, that are good, but not too good and they have terrible sells this gen.

Personally, I believe that everyone will be surprised by the development periods of next gen.

I think people seem to forget that this gen of consoles, namely the PS3 and 360, suffered from bottlenecks that surely hindered the development process for many developers. Of course, this is assuming that the next generation of consoles will be without such limitations and therefore I could be completely wrong. :P

That, and they create totally new engines for this gen, and now they already have some engines that are running "next gen" games already

Apparently dark times.

I mean it must've been difficult to dig deep into the PS3's hardware, figure out it's secrets, decode it, etc. Especially if you only had 2 years to do it.

Sounds like those "Experienced" Administrators, completely unwilling to accept a change in their network because "it works", so nothing is allowed to be changed and soon enough you're running an ancient network that "just works" even though transfers are slow as hell and everyone in the building hates their very old workstations which use CRT's...

Technology moves on, if you don't like it then you're in the wrong job.

I think that kind of goes without saying. I mean, it's like starting over again from scratch. On the other hand, I don't see why a lot of what you already know wouldn't translate to new hardware, since every component will be more powerful than what you had previously.

I look forward to ND's next gen endeavors. They are an excellent developer.

I know, it's kind of lame that ND (one of the most ambitious teams on the graphics and technology department) is saying this, I mean this should be good news for them, they are going to be able to do more cool stuff than before.

Sony simply needs to make a machine thats easier to code for, thats something microsoft definitely got right this gen. Make a console easier to develop on with the right hardware and assets and game dev's want to make games for it.... hmmmm, imagine that.

I'm imagining ps4 running games of "the samaritan" graphical quality, remember it's still a couple years away.

z4twenny

No kidding, hopefully Sony just keeps the Cell with more power. Or preferably, ditches the Cell altogether for something much more friendly for third-party developers.

lol, keep believing everything you're told. ND know full well they will maximise the PS4, even easier than before knowing the complexity of cell and how sony will avoid the same mistake. They just want some cute attention from the fans.

Perhaps they had such a hard time transitioning from PS2 to PS3 was because of how incredibly complex and difficult it was to dev for the cell?

Maybe now Sony will play their cards right and have easier hardware to work with.

Except that in 2007 alone, about a little less or more then a year after the PS3 launched, we had great games like: the first installment into the magnificent Unchartes series, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, and Ratchet and Clank released. And whats comical is that....in reality... It took about the same amount of time for the 360 after it launched, if not a little longer, for it(the 360) to receive its first big, and what was then its ONLY major exclusive of that year, in Gears of War, soooo lol! Seriously, this ridicolous forum myth that the PS3 had no games for several years needs to die already, and then it needs to be cremated.

This is coming from a developer who has a flood of money coming to them. Imagine what it's going to be like for the rest of the game development community.

We're already beyond the threshold where improvements in technology have managed to make a serious dent in console libraries.

I really like Naughty Dog's honesty. Plus, at the end of the day, you know ND is going to deliver the delicious and mouth watering gaming goods like they always have (going back from Crash Bandicoot all the way up to the brilliant ...and built for modern times ...Uncharted series) And that's what matters, BUT unlike other developers, ND also isnt afraid to share with us their true feelings of how things go/and or went, and in what happens with development. And i like that too! Yeah, i know.....after what they were able to accomplish with Uncharted on the PS3, you too(like many people have also) have questioned whether ND are level 100 wizards or are human beings, BUT the truth is, that they are all in fact human. ND consists of normal people like you and I , albiet consists of supremely talented, hard working, and very driven and dedicated individuals, but none the less, they are real individuals with real feelings. And I'm sure that that "transitional phase" to a next gen is brutal for any body or any developer to go through. ND is just being as honest as other developers wish they could be, BUT ND still pushes through it, and comes out of it stronger then ever before. They(ND) are a top tier developer with top tier honesty lol. P.s But although the PS3 did make it a more difficult process then it needed to be. So hopefully this time, Sony learns from the past mistakes, and works closely with ND to make an already difficult process, as easy as it can be for both. ND is one of the best developers ever, if not THE out-right best modern developer in the game currently, let alone the best of Sony's big and great first party line up, So, If Sony should be working closely with any one, it should be with ND...and as well....they should also be working closely with Guerilla Games, because GG are technical monsters (GG arguably created the most advanced console engine of this generation) But really, Sony should be looking to work with all their first party developers, so that they all can get through the transitional fase as easy and successful as possible. It should be like one big collective team effort where Sony is the head coach ect. Anyway, P.s.s The "next gen transitional phase" in game development kind of reminds me of "hell week" in high school football lol. I mean , they are sort of similar in ways, once you think about it. Its TOUGH for everybody, but its something that needs to be done to prepare for the next season, or in gaming's case, the next gen. NO BODY likes it, and even after completion, most will still say they didn't like it/and or were "terrified," but they sacrifice and push through it again and again, because the end results are whats worth it. (It can be a satisfying goal of accomplishment ect and in seeing the hard work pay off in better performance to help your team win, or a better game that more people enjoy and appreciate.) But at the same time, I want to mention that hell well is not or should ever be impossibly tough either, because that would defeat a lot of the purpose IMO. Hell week is bearable, and its meant to strengthen a player, and if hes willing - to let him know what hes truly made of, and to most importantly, prepare him for the next season. But with anything you do, there is always a possibility of burn out. And I do believe that in both instances, there can be that thin line between tough, and over doing it/over working/over exertion, But its up to the team or developer to find a balance, and not ever cross that thin line. To just do as best as they can without over- doing it or burning out. I guess we can call it smart training and smart game development/ engine creation ect. But going back to what i was intially saying, MORE times then not hell week in football DID separate the MEN from the boys, and it made good men GREAT men. So i figure that the people that do go through both instantes, can come out of it, stronger then ever, and in the end , better for the experience...and ready to take on the next season or the next generation of hardware ect. I do hope that this generational transitional phase won't be as brutal on ND as the last one on them ect. But here's hoping that Naughty Dog over comes yet again, and that they come out of it stronger then ever before as a developer. All i have to say is.... Make the best game you can Naughty Dog! And own the next gen just like you owned this gen! And sorry for the huge post lol. I guess I had a lot to say.

that's honestly how i saw it. "it's so damn amazing and powerful i don't think we, who pulled uncharted 2 and 3 this gen, will be able to handle this".

If that's how you "saw it," then I have to ask, are you "blind" lol. No, but seriously, What Naughty Dog did say is that they are terrified of going through that transitional process again, because of how hard the last one was for them, But they still pushed through it. (Arguably becoming an even stronger developer for it) As an example, The best football player in the league could say that he's terrified of training camp, but he goes through it again and again regardless. Why? Because he has to - to keep evolving and improving. Its that drive to be the best! Naughty Dog has the same drive to be the best of their respective line of work, And so they did/do/and will go through the hard things they dont like to. They are just being honest about that process, but again, have already , and will push through it to be the best. Hopefully its easier for them this time though. And Sony can go a long way in making it easier for everyone by having an open and friendly relationship with their first party line up, and in asking for things like their input ect... P.s And hell...very similarly, Some great fighters will also tell you that they hate training, But that they go through it , because they want to be the best, and that at the end of the day, the end results are what's worth it, and that winning or becoming the best is the greatest feeling ever. ND was hit really hard by that tough process the last time, But look what they were able to manage. They passed the test in flying colors and THEN SOME in spades. They over came, and so theres no doubt that they cant over come again. ND are winners and only employ winners.

no offense but it's 3am and that's too much text for my exponentially decreasing attention span. from what i got, let me say this: all devs go through a transition period. only ND bothered to say they're "omg so terrified" of the transition. so either they're saying they're bad devs (which i know they aren't), or they're trying to pull an implied advertisement.

No offence taken buddy. Im not trying to be offensive to you either :) But, I'll try and explain myself a little better. And im sorry, but this is going to be another really long post lol. Hey, but I'm trying to simplify my posts as much as possible. They(ND) are terrified of the process, just like any other developer would be. And if any other developer told you way differently, then they'd be lying through their teeth. As another example, Even some tremendous fighters have said that they are very nervous before a fight, thats how they feel, but they still find a way to perform exceptionally. And in some cases by even fueling that emotion. Its just honesty and nothing more. Even a great developer of game designers/programmers ect or a great athlete can feel genuine emotion and be honest. LOL You are reading way to much into it. You need to look at what IS being said, and take it as is, instead of searching for some crazy hidden meaning behind it, that's just not there in this specific instance. You also have to consider that, Naughty Dog was hit exceptionally hard by it as well, So its only natural they feel that way about it , and now going into another transitional fase. But again, they pushed through it the first time. And will continue to do so because their drive to be the best developer is unmatched. Why can't they be honest about how they truly feel though? What do you want? The typical P.R bull of what every other developer is saying about next gen development? Bottom line, it that that is just talk, And at the end of the day, ND IS the developer who while being brutally honest is STILL going to likely deliver like they always have, and excel like they always have, While its the other developers, who talked about how easy next gen development was going to be, that are probably the ones that do fail to evolve with the times ect. Anyway, Hopefully, its not as hard on ND this time as it was last time. After all, they have already gone through the worst of the worst of "next gen transitional fase" before, So they have that experience and can learn from it, in going through it again.

This is coming from a developer who has a flood of money coming to them. Imagine what it's going to be like for the rest of the game development community.

We're already beyond the threshold where improvements in technology have managed to make a serious dent in console libraries.

[QUOTE="HaloinventedFPS"]

[QUOTE="Pelon208"]

I would prefer UC graphics with 4xAA at 1080p and 60 FPS

I know its not going to happen, but that would be cool

SPYDER0416

UC3 graphics are meh dude

if PS4 is strong enough, it can pull off Metro 2033 level graphics in 1080p/4xaa at 60fps

we shall see

Usually at the beginning of a generation is when the games are the strongest and prettiest for a console, Metal Gear Solid 2 was the single prettiest game on any platform in the year of 2001 (and also ran spectacularly smooth at 60fps if I remember right), and Gears was pretty much unmatched for a couple of years in pure beauty and power.

I think Metro 2033 at 1080p and 60fps should be childs play for consoles once the start of the next gen comes around, hopefully they don't neglect resolution and framerate just to go for a beefier game in graphics.

Wrong there were plenty of PC games that looked better than MGS2 in 2001. And plenty of PC games looked as good as Gears of War on PC before and at release. The first years of a console are usually the least optimized. For the first few years of the Xbox 360 release my old 6800gt was performing better in most multiplats and playing at higher settings and res.

Its comparable to this: George St. Pierre , who is a world champion fighter, says that he gets nervous/ and or scared/"terrified" before his fights, its how he feels, and he's honest about it, but he still goes out and does what he has to do and what needs to be done and wins consistently and exceptionally. Would you say that if Gsp didn't get nervous before a fight, he'd be "so so much better?" Its just honesty, and as long as the end results are brilliant then that's what matters
