Top 5 excuses

1. Sales dont matter! ...

even though historically speaking the best selling console has always nabbed the lions share of software support

2. The Wii is a fad!...

wow this apparant fad is starting to span  out for a pretty damn long time.... any of you starting to get uncomfortable that ... perhaps... it's not a fad? lol

3. It's just because the Wii is cheaper!...

even though with the PS3/360's higher price, comes more powerful hardware (ie; better graphics, online, multi-media features ect) should justify the cost of their consoles -- making them just as worthy a purchase as the Wii... looks like consumers didnt agree

4. Teh Wii's games and graphics suck, have fun with your mario rehash!

Graphics have never won a console war, and your opinion on its games are subjective.

5. I don't care!!!

Then what are you doing in systemwars?

Top 5 excuses

1. Sales dont matter! ...

even though historically speaking the best selling console has always nabbed the lions share of software support

Fortenium

Yeah, and I find it hilarious when they later say, "Oh, the PS3/360 is winning because of sales and Wii sucks lololol!"

2. The Wii is a fad!...

wow this apparant fad is starting to span out for a pretty damn long time.... any of you starting to get uncomfortable that ... perhaps... it's not a fad? lol

jedigemini

I still don't get how the Wii is considered to be a fad by fanboys...

3. It's just because the Wii is cheaper!...

even though with the PS3/360's higher price, comes more powerful hardware (ie; better graphics, online, multi-media features ect) should justify the cost of their consoles -- making them just as worthy a purchase as the Wii... looks like consumers didnt agree

jedigemini

Nintendo reaches out to non-gamers, as well. Games like Brain Age and Wii Sports are made so that anyone from your younger sibling to your grandma can play. Hardcore gamers go for the good stuff, which non-gamers will stay away from.  That is partially why Nintendo is getting high sales.

4. Teh Wii's games and graphics suck, have fun with your mario rehash!

Graphics have never won a console war, and your opinion on its games are subjective.

jedigemini

Exactly. This is THE biggest excuse I have seen. Graphics don't really matter. Sure, it's nice to have eye candy when you play, but graphics don't make the game. If there was a Barney game with awesome graphics, would it instantly be considered good? I asked that to some friends who said graphics are all that matter in a game and they got mad.

5. I don't care!!!

Then what are you doing in systemwars?

jedigemini

Haven't seen this yet.

I'm not a fanboy (I love all three consoles a lot), but I am getting tired of repetitive excuses you listed. It's like they don't even mean it now.

I dont think they anything to say in response... they seem to be at a loss for words in this thread.

any takers?

It's actually very impressive. Higher than the PS3's attach rate, but obviously not higher than the 360's and its impossible to compare as its only been available for fraction of the time, with a fraction of the purchasers, and fraction of the games available for purchase.

I bought 12 360 games in a year. No way all those casuals and non-gamers buy more games than 360/ps3 gamers will.

It really depends though. If the userbase is large enough, and casuals and non-gamers average 3-4 games a year, that would mean software sales would be better for developers on the Wii, especially with the lower costs of development.

That's great. I was just about to make a thread asking when the numbers come out. Cows and lemmings will be pwned.

And of course PS3_FTW will go back into hiding for a couple weeks, re-emerging after he thinks the NPD threads have blown over

All I can say is, I hope you're having a great time with this. Gloating about how your console of choice is selling more than mine right now doesn't seem like much fun at all to me. *goes back to playing Gears of War.*

I think once people get used to the endless library of party games, people will move on. I'm not saying Wii doesn't have the potential for awesome games (it already has a a couple), but I'm not sure Metroid Prime, SMG, and SSBB (the good games) are the ones retirees, mothers, and girls want.

That's because it's only been a couple months. And like most fads, the fact that the demand is so high is helping it's appeal. Remember the McDonald's beanie babies?

The DS is cheap, and has a variety of awesome games. Right now, people are buying the Wii because when you swing the remote, you really swing your tennis racket! or golf club! or boxing glove! or....well, you get the point.

For you cows and lemmings that say time and time and time again that the "fad" will die, I want to know, WHEN will it die? Give me an exact month. You say the same thing every month, and it never happens. So tell us exactly when it will happen.

I have a feeling a year from now it will still be dominating your little consoles, and you'll STILL be saying that "it's teh fad".

What about Wii Orchestra, Wii Health Pack, Cooking Mama, My Sims, and Big Brain Academy Wii? There seems to be quite a few titles there that appeal to them and these should come out just this year. There is still another game in the horizon that will be huge for nongamers: Nintendogs. Nintendo has opened up the market and the possibilities are endless. There are just so many people with so many different interests that companies can cater towards. They just have to be creative and go after this market.

And the best part is that the Wii has the DS. Companies can try out games for the DS due to the relatively low costs and then create games for the Wii. I know, I know, you'll argue, "TEH PORTZ!!!!1!!eleven", but this is a viable option that companies can take. Why do you think games such as Trauma Center and Cooking Mama exist? These types of games wouldn't be without the DS. Another excellent example is Brain Age. I think this game cost about $50,000 - $100,000 to make and the game has sold millions. There is great potential with the Wii and DS.

Or remember those iPod and DS fads? Oh wait, those weren't fads, they're still as strong as ever. Not all of these type products will really last, but that doesn't mean some don't stay on. Plus you're comparing a plush toy to a games console, very different markets.

Not according to Economics... unless this is a theory i've not been told about yet. Would you care to explain why something having a high demand would make other people want it... all other things the same.

Wii is still in fad mode, if you ask me. Plus, not all of Nintendo's 15 million die hard fans have gotten one yet.

Sooshy

That still doesn't explain all the retirees, mothers, girls, etc. who have gotten the Wii. Are you going to argue that they are Nintendo die hard fans too?

I think once people get used to the endless library of party games, people will move on. I'm not saying Wii doesn't have the potential for awesome games (it already has a a couple), but I'm not sure Metroid Prime, SMG, and SSBB (the good games) are the ones retirees, mothers, and girls want.

No, those products are targeted towards the hardcore*.  Other products are targeted towards other demographics.  The Wii will have a broad selection of software to appeal to different types of users.  Did all PS2 owners want to play the same games?  No.

*Super Mario Galaxy could be a breakout hit - Mario's appeal is very broad, and this is a flagship Mario title on a popular Nintendo system.  Super Mario Sunshine, while not reaching the heights of the GTAs or Halo 2, was a very good seller in its own right on GameCube, an unpopular Nintendo system.  SMG could be huge.

Not according to Economics... unless this is a theory i've not been told about yet. Would you care to explain why something having a high demand would make other people want it... all other things the same.

GundamGuy0

It's not the high demand by itself.  The demand has to be there, and it has to exceed the supply.  Then people who see the product during the intermittent times it is available are more likely to make the decision to buy it then because they know they can't arbitrarily do it at their convenience later.

I don't understand Sheep.  Sales were meaningless when Sony dominated Nintendo, but now they are the end all be all.  Also, they just don't seem to understand that when something is $250 versus competition that is $400 and $600, the sales are usually going to be higher.  I own a Wii and a PS3, and the Wii has not been touched since early January.  Do sales help me out at all?  No.

This so called Fad is still amazingly strong months after Launch

I don't really know many fads that went on for so long. Other than possibly the original Tamagochi (sp?).

To axt113:

The Wii and DS differ because the DS is a portable device. I can take the DS with me where I go, and it's fast and easy to turn on and play. We live in a world where the iPod has taken over. Sexy portable devices that offer something to consumers are what is selling. DS fits in that category, and it's cheaper than the competition. You can give little Jennifer a DS with Nintendogs when she goes camping or goes to spend the night at a friend's house. The DS is popular for that legit reason. People feel like they need stuff like that right now.

The reason the Wii is doing so well right now is because it's hard to find, and people had fun with it for whatever amount of time they spent playing it over a friend's house (or at the store). It's a new and exciting experience, but eventually people will get used to the controls amd the shallow party games will get old. The Wii does have awesome games coming out for it, but it's not the kind of games that the people buying want to play. Mom doesn't want to invest the time it takes to play Metroid Prime 3, and she probably doesn't find it interesting.

Basically, when people get used to the new controller, the sales will suffer. I think the PS3 and 360 sales are going to have steady growth, while the Wii is going to experience extreme highs and lows. Only time will tell.

And I thank you for that.

That's because it's only been a couple months. And like most fads, the fact that the demand is so high is helping it's appeal. Remember the McDonald's beanie babies?

Or remember those iPod and DS fads? Oh wait, those weren't fads, they're still as strong as ever. Not all of these type products will really last, but that doesn't mean some don't stay on. Plus you're comparing a plush toy to a games console, very different markets.

That's because the iPod and DS are offering something that people can use wherever they are. Especially the iPod. I can go to work and listen to my iPod while I do my job. It's giving people something that can potentionally make their day go by faster and more easily. The Wii is something for people to get out when they have friends over or something. They (generally) can't take their Wii's to work and play Tennis all day. They can't take their Wii's to the gym and play baseball while pumping iron and running on the treadmill.
