Neither Gears or Killzone 3 will score AAA

I know it's silly to call things this early, and i'll gladly accept ownage if i'm wrong, but i just don't see it happening. Gears of War 2, even though bigger and better than the original in nearly every way, demonstrated that despite that people just weren't as hyped to play the game as they were when it was fresh and new. Even if Gears of War 3 fixes all of the multiplayer woes, i just don't see it doing enough to justify a third AAA score for what looks from early screens to be essentially the same formula for the third time.

As for Killzone 3, i think Killzone 2 barely got AAA on Gamespot. It was a good game, by all means, but not the epic uppercut of awesomeness that many were hoping it would be, and interest for it seemed to just flat-out die mere weeks after it released. Killzone 3 is releasing too soon to have any meaningful graphical update, and as such i think will suffer from more of the same syndrome and knock it down into the AA range.

I may be wrong. For the sake of good gaming i hope i am. But that's how i'm calling it. :P

If reviewers gave Gears 2 one of the worst games this gen AAA, I don't see how they could screw gears 3 up any more so... It'll get AAA off hype alone. KZ3 has a great chance at AAA but I'd need to see more before beting anything.N00bTuber

Well seeing as GTA4 got AAAA which wasn't really a improvement at all imo because they took out lots of stuff. I think Gears + Killzone could get AAA since they are expanding the game from the original.

Hopefully Killzone 3 has better story / single player n fix the controls abit.

Gears 3 with great multiplayer with no bugs n its fine. ( Perhaps better story? but who buys gears for the story? )

The Way GeoW2 is headed (GeoW2 was a letdown in some respects to the GeoW1 fans), it's possible for it to got to an AA...

The Way KZ2 got a 9.0 at Gamespot, again, it would be possible for the sequel to be an AA...

I can see both of those things happening.

To counter, I would say this :

GeoW has extra months until April 2011 to polish the game and best their GeoW2 efforts...especially if EPIC actually listens to their fans this time around.

KZ2 was a first generation Guerrilla title, now that they don't have to worry about creating an ENGINE on the PS3, they can devote their full resources to pimping out an already excellent start up point KZ2 left off on. Besides, check out KZ2 metacritic scores, it was an outstanding title, it's not like Killzone 2 was BARELY a good game or something. From all the awards it got last year, I think it's going in a great direction.

So, it can go either way, AA or AAA for both games, honestly. :P

Perhaps, but we are predicting scores. Gamespot clearly still had some love left for KZ2, even at the end of the year. A lot of games released early in the year actually don't get that. They usually get forgotten or overlooked.Skittles_McGee

3D on PS3 requires 3D TV plus 3D glasses. Not to mention 3D LOWERS the graphics on games...

Even without much information on either, I'm confident that both will score AAA. IDK if it's just me, but scoring seems to be rather lenient when it comes to shooters.

Well, if a rehash like SMG2 got AAAA, I don't see why Gears and KZ can't have it too.

But now seriously, I get the feeling that KZ3 will probably get 8.5 here as I didn't see much KZlove from the GS staff last year, and Visari and Radec will be hard to top, so KZ3 is basically left with no cool villians IMO.

As for gears, it'll get AAA of this I'm sure...

I didn't say that it guarantees success.

I just think that shooters are rarely penalized for not showing enough growth whereas other genres are.

But like I said, it could just be me. I'm not representating this little gut feeling I have as anything close to being fully representative of reality.

I say both might be AAA but its hard to tell without seeing anything of the games yet.

If Gears pulls out the same gameplay again, it won't score as well. I think Gears 2 is overrated.

Since I dont know much about Killzone 3 I cant say anything about that but it seems like Epic are really trying to make Gears 3 a better game than the rest, including things like underwater levels and mechs, etc.. to create some variety, to dedicated servers to make a better online experience, to hiring well known writers to make a stronger story. The way they have spoken about the game so far seems to be that they want to end the series with a bang.

Scores are out of our control. I have a good feeling that both will be top shooters and must plays like the last ones. I can't wait to see some Killzone 3 especially. :D

I believe Gears 3 will be AAA, considering the prior two are, however I don't think Killzone 3 will be, only because they would have to top Killzone 2, which is just awesome and I haven't seen anything from it, other than images.

When will people realize that quality=/=scores. It's all about the hype when it comes to big budget, big named exclusives like these two. Did Halo ODST deserve AAA? Most say no, but it still got AAA here. Reviewers review games based on hype and franchise name. Blockbuster games like those will always score AAA just because.
