Sports Columnist Bill Simmons Is Frustrated With The NES Classic Sellouts

yeah i saw that. shits hilarious.

for anyone who doesnt want to click the link

Nice, good find, that's pretty hilarious. It seems like Nintendo's only shipping 2 million Switch units at launch so it looks like we're going to see another shortage fiasco all over again.

and yet the trolls will still come out finding new ways to defend whatever it is x corporation does, giving reason y to justify it. thats the best part.

@jcrame10: Exactly man, gotta love the sheep here on this forum. The only legitimate reasoning I can see for shipping 2 million Switch units is because the Wii U had a bad launch but since the Switch looks a lot more appealing than Wii U, it doesn't make sense to only ship out that many.

PS4 fanboys are just as bad as them, but thats beside the point.

It all comes down to pricing. Had the NES mini been 130 dollars, or even 100 it wouldnt have flown off as quickly as it did at 60.

If Switch is a 200 dollar machine, it'll fly and theyll have a shortage at only 2 million stocked. if its 300, itll move but slowly. if its 400, or even 500 (which theres no way it will be) it probably wont even move 2 million by the end of march.

Lol. According to some recent rumors (take them with a grain of salt), there are supposed to be three bundles. The Switch by itself for $260, Switch packed with a Mario game for $300 and a pro controller/Zelda bundle for $340. If those happen to be real, we can definitely see the need to ship more units at launch since it will sell like hotcakes with those prices. With that said, I'd buy the pro controller/Zelda bundle in a heartbeat.

its hard to say until the january meeting, but i dont see them bundling the pro controller.

IMO that controller should come with every single switch device anyways.

@jcrame10: Yeah I agree, we can't confirm anything until January but based on past speculation, I wouldn't be surprised if that rumor is true.

I definitely agree about the pro controller since that will most likely be my main controller for most of the games.

Not really. Those "critical" of Nintendo have their heads so deep into that (and the SNES) era of Nintendo, yet blame modern sheep for being the nostalgic ones for still supporting them.

Decreasing supply drives demand, you restrict the supply which increases hype surrounding people thinking they can't get one which makes it far more desirable, then you flood the market with them and these people jump at it like they won't get another chance.

The scalpers create demand in the main consumer market. People want it, and have to go to a third party to buy it. Then all of a sudden, more stock from Nintendo comes out and they can buy it again.

They did it with the Amiibo craze as well (notice how no one is talking about or buying them anymore?) and they probably did the same thing with the Wii when it originally launched (whether that was on purpose or accidental is up for debate).

I wouldn't say it's a common practice in a capitalist society, but it isn't unheard of. It's just another facet to marketing.

@beardmad: well ... they sold what they have produced ... I'm sure they are already making money on it.

It is a win situation for them for sure. I doubt any maker want their product sit on a store shelves unsold for a long time ... until it is sold they had to pay labor, material costs etc etc etc etc

So yeah, it is a win situation for Nintendo for sure.

I wanted one of these initially, but what is the deal with the controllers? They're not even 3-ft long? That literally makes this thing unplayable. The stupidity of that decision took this from a no-brainer cheap nostalgia purchase to NO THANKS!

Is it compatible with any wireless controller, or at least a controller with more like an 8' cable? I only have Wii-U Pro controller at this point, my Wii pro is dead.

I would be far more interested in a SNES mini version anyway, so no real loss. But if they fixed the NES problems I'd look at it. But for god's sake don't do this stupid crap with the SNES. Should probably do better than 30 games too. Though 30 SNES games goes alot farther than 30 NES.

Honestly I liked the idea of this but they have dropped the ball again. Wire shorter than it should be, over priced and purposely short stocked again to put the interest and prices up.

The concept is hardly new. You can get mega drive/genesis retro consoles that are cheaper, come with more games and you can plug cartridges in.

I wouldn't say it's a common practice in a capitalist society, but it isn't unheard of. It's just another facet to marketing.

The scalpers don't "create" demand, they are fulfilling demand. Usually by taking a chunk out of the "natural" supply and effectively taking it away, they are aiding in the scarcity, which causes prices to go up. But in no way are they "creating" demand.

It's the same way with anything that's limited edition. Once the initial run is gone, there's only scalpers left selling them. Of course that limited availability causes the price to go up. Generally, it's foolish to bid up items unless they are 100% confirmed to be OOP and rare. With something like a concert ticket, once it sells out it's generally sold out for good. But with something that is manufactured, it can come back in stock at any time which means anyone that bid it up is pretty much an idiot.

Lol, that's too funny. Yep, it seems like the Switch was doomed before it even released.

Seriously though, I think the Switch is going to sell really well and I'm a fan of it so far but Nintendo really should ship out more than 2 million of them.

NES Minis came out, and they were hot. So hot they ran out of stock within hours of being available.

https://www.google.com/amp/www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2016/11/12/sold-out-nintendo-promises-more-nes-classic-edition-stock-coming-soon/

Nintendo in all of it's usual antics didn't ship nearly as many units as they should have, and it's quite clear the majority of customers who wanted an NES mini didn't get one.

Nintendo, for its part, is promising more stock before the holidays. The company tweeted this yesterday once it became clear that only a miniscule portion of the people that wanted the Mini NES actually got one:

"The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition system is a hot item, and we are working hard to keep up with consumer demand. There will be a steady flow of additional systems through the holiday shopping season and into the new year.”

Nintendo has done this before with other items, most recently: amiibos. And similar to the amiibo situation, NES minis are now being sold by scalpers online for up to 200 dollars. And truth be told, if more DO come before Christmas, I highly doubt it will be a large quantity.

It's almost like Nintendo doesn't want its consumers to buy and enjoy it's product. The brand marketing team must sit down and think that Nintendo fans get off on hunting their items down online for ridiculous prices.

Coolyfett's wife bought one Friday morning. After playing with it this weekend and watching her play. Nintendo released a flaw product. Coolyfett believes this shortage was done on purpose to create news about it. Locally most of the retailers only got 5-8 skus per store. Atlanta is not a small city so this information seems really odd.

The biggest flaw of the NES Mini is the game selections, the user interface and the corded controller.

Nintendo should not have made the NES mini.

You can't be seriously implying that people were expecting that shit from a re-release of a 30 year old console from the 8 bit era

Yes Nintendo could have done this retro plug and play right and they are playing people on nostalgia. Plug and Plays are really good ideas, but they need to be done properly. Nintendo not only released a console with a cord, but a very short cord. They tricked users with the Namco titles as well. Super Mario 2 should not even be there. Its a few other things they messed up on.

The Wife took off work to get on and she says there was a line. She hates the short cord. She was hyped off Nostalgia. Wanted to get back to her childhood, in a way Coolyfett was interested in playing it as well and see how it worked. The biggest issue is not the cord, but the cord length is a major flaw. Most if not all of these games are pretty short. When you want to change from game to game you have hit reset on the console itself. This is annoying. Ironically the cord is so short you are damn near sitting with the console on your lap. They could have used a universal pause menu for something like getting back to the main menu.

All I know is I made a killing reselling the one I picked up. I sold it faster and got more than what I was offering for my taco bell PSVR lol. I still have the PSVR. Anyway I know these aren't limited and they will eventually restock so I'll get again later on. I had no intentions of reselling but after seeing how much people are willing to pay for it, shoot you would too.

I think Nintendo thought of it as a cheap way to make some cash. I don't think they really saw this as being a big seller. Little micro-controller emulated systems have been around for a long time. I have an Atari one.... it was fun to take apart.

This is the first wave. Don't buy these things on ebay for crazy prices today. Wait to see how Nintendo does this going forward, and be willing to wait until mid December. For a new hot product that's more than fair for the company imho.

I hope Nintendo isn't trying some market manipulation here. The amiibo thing did seem that way. I don't blame them for how the wii went since that was the fastest selling of all time and it was a total shock. For the NES mini though, this was obviously going to be popular before Xmas. It must be a simple product to produce. To me it makes no sense for them to limit supply. This close to Xmas they should just flood the market with them if they want to maximize sales. If they are doing that manipulating, I hope it's just for the first wave and that they'll make sure this thing is everywhere come December.

No excuses. Manufacturing of that console should be extremely cheap and fast. They are artificially driving up demand by limiting stock.

I got one and am really happy with it, but Nintendo probably figured most gamers these days wouldn't want one because it would be considered underpowered to the PS4 and Xbox One. That they would complain that it did not use wireless controllers, why is the controller cord too short, where is the online, doesn't support VR, and 8-bit games look awful and are only for kids. And you can get all of these games on the Wii U which permits wireless gameplay. You know, its all about graphics, low frame rates, cinematic walk-throughs, and online. Just look around System Wars, not really that hard to figure out.

If they didn't think it would sell well then they wouldn't have made it in the first place. They obviously saw the rising popularity of retro gaming and decided to finally release a product for that market.

This is why Nintendo games never get a price cut and their products keep their value over the years Nintendo never over ships they always under ship to create demand.

you know what this means?

preorder the switch the minute it goes up lol

You've already fallen into their trap, scare tactics to make people think they won't get one so they rabidly try to order before everyone else.

It's not like there's a choice if you want one shortly after it's released. If you didn't pre-order a Wii early for example, you basically had to wait for months.

@nintendoboy16: come now. I give you more credit than that. Youre not one of those blind fanboys who would eat shit if it had the right logo on it.

This has been badly handled. If a third party peripheral from Blaze of all people can do things better than the mighty Nintendo they have dropped the ball. Cheaper, more functions, more games, better availability and two controllers with decent sized wires.
