Perhaps, Sony will get the jump on biometric controls? A patent application reveals their possible plans for a biometric controller and handheld with specifications similar to the upcomingPlayStation Vita.Siliconera

Sony's proposed devices will measure three biometric factors: galvanic skin resistance, electrocardio data, and electro-muscular data or in plain English – how moist your skin is, your heart rhythm, and muscle movements. All of this information will be sent into a video game by simply holding a controller or handheld. How are games going to use this? Sony has a list of ideas.

  • Weapons that change depending on how stressed you are. An increase in stress level could make a weapon more accurate or less steady, which will make it difficult to target an enemy. Sony specifically mentions a sniper situation where the weapon becomes more steady if you're relaxed.
  • Tensing up your muscles to withstand an attack or charge up a shield.
  • A video game character whose facial expressions, movements, posture, and even voice changes depending on your biometric data. For example, this character will sweat when a player is nervous.
  • An adrenaline s.tyle boost which will let you run faster, jump higher, and punch harder when stressed.
  • A health bar that depletes more rapidly if you have a high stress level.
  • An attack button that changes a character's move depending if the player is stressed or relaxed.
  • Background music and scenery that changes depending on your stress level. Matching music is one example, but Sony also proposes to change music to make a player more relaxed. Brightness of objects and the zoom level, representing a higher level of focus, are two ideas for scenery.
  • A game that adapts difficulty levels depending on a players stress level

i don't see this working, and plus i don't see the need, games should focus in fun, they are wasting time making useless gimicks.

It would be cool to try something like that, but I certainly wouldn't want it as a main stay for my gaming.

Gotta agree with William here.

The fun of certain games can be sucked out the second the controller realizes we're becoming stressed out or something. :P

The biometric systems sound really cool, but how about some refinements to the actual design, such as mechanical switches instead of membranes and a greater height on the analog sticks.

I agree that the design is pretty awful. If you've come back from working a lot and you're really stressed and tired, it'll only make the game much harder for you since you won't be able to aim as well with the gun, and that would make you even more stressed since you're dying a lot  Stresstation 4?

I like the overall technology and the idea, but not the integration of it.

I'm in agreement with the points being made about Sony needing to rethink the ergonomics of their controller.

LOL whats next sony releases a controller that injects sleeping drugs into you and you applaud it? *not surprising* the whole concept of a gaming is I play games to relax and have fun now have a system in place where If I get stressed the game stops being fun and sorry but accuracy going down is just stupid. Sony needs to concentrate more on making their controller ergonomic and more accurate instead of a gimmick like this.

I don't like this... because when I play online, my hands sweat when after a while after play, I don't want that interfering with my gameplay... :x

I can just imagine someone playing competitive MP hating this as they get more frustrated that their aim in the game is worsened because of this feedback feature, causing them to spiral into a horrible rage, which makes their aim suck, which makes them go friggin berserker... could be amusing, could be tragic. But I'd imagine someone playing stressed would already suffer in their gameplay anyways this is kind of unnecessary.

So you have a bad day at work or college etc. and you come home to unwind and play games to ease your stress. But the game sees you're stressed and makes the game harder and more annoying to play. yeah great idea

I think that with Amnesia there's no need for biometric sensors. You can pretty much assume the player is stressed all the time.

A lot of people love the Dual Shock the way it is and don't want it to change. I, for one, would like nothing more than a significant size increase. I don't mind the controller shape or anything, just the size itself is pretty small for a 6'5" grown man like me.

This would be awesome. Valve has already talked about how they measure the emotional levels of people while playing games, so this seems like something they would endorse.

Well that's not far away from the truth. I've noticed that people who get too stressed while playing games are generally the worse players. Good players can keep their relative coolness even on extreme situations.

So if I'm stressed after a long day of work, and just want to sit down, relax, and enjoy a game, I won't be able because the controller is going to detect that I'm stressed and make a weapon less accurate? :|

But to be fair, all are intilted to their opinion and preference so... Just sayin. :P

SecretPolice

Yes, the 360 controller's D-Pad is god-awful. But that's not the only thing the DS3 has over the 360 controller IMO. That's definitely the BIGGEST problem, but there are little things that the DS3 is just better than the 360 controller at(how important they are is up to you though).

First off, batteries+wireless. The DS3 doesn't require a play and charge kit or AA batteries at all, and you can recharge it as you're playing and the DS3 comes with Wireless no matter what. Everything is perfect right out of the box, and there's no buying any periphrials necessary.

Second off, Buttons. This basically boils down to preference, but I definitely prefer the DS3's more traditional "soft" flat style buttons to the 360 controller's clickier more rounded "hard" oval-shaped buttons. However, the best example of superior buttons on the DS3 isn't the face buttons, but R1/L1. They just feel way better than the tiny, overly-clicky RB/LB and are easier to access with your fingers sliding up from R2/L2 compared to having to lift them up from RT/LT IMO. I chalk this up as an advantage for the DS3 due to the fact that the DS3 buttons are way more traditional and similar to the types of buttons we've been using for decades now(NES, Sega Master System, SNES, PS1, PS2, Game Boy, etc) so they will feel more familiar to the average person who has never played a PS3 or 360 before.

Thirdly, you don't have to plug your headset into the DS3 like you do with the 360 controller so there's less cords to deal with when you're using a headset. This is especially better if you have a true gaming headset like Trittons or Turtle Beaches, where there's already more than enough cords to begin with. You're not "bound" to the controller when you're using a headset with the DS3 like you are with the 360 controller. I don't know how many times I was talking to people on XBL and forgot the headset was plugged into the controller and I stood up to do something and the controller went flying off the table. You won't ever have this problem with the DS3.

Fourthly and lastly, analog stick size+attributes. Again, this can vary from person to person but I'm a 6'5" man with large fingers and the taller+wider shaped analog sticks of the DS3 fit my fingers much better. And I definitely prefer the rubbery texture of the DS3 analogs to the 360 controller's plasticy analogs. And when you first get a new 360 controller, the analogs have these little plastic bumps on them that start to hurt your fingers during a long gaming session, this gets annoying especially if you're playing FPS games where your thumbs are constantly on the analogs(these bumps wear down over time though). And on top of all of this(and possibly more important) the analogs on the 360 controller are proven to have a larger overall deadzone than the DS3 analogs, and are also tighter, making it harder to aim more smoothly compared to the DS3. HOWEVER I will say the 360 controller's advantage in size hurts the DS3's analogs bit due to them getting really close to each other when pushing the left analog to the right and the right analog to the left, your thumbs can hit up against each other. A size increase in the DS3 could fix this problem though(Damn you Sony, make some Man-Sized controllers for us! Not everyone is the same size so why should we have the same sized controllers?!?)

So yeah, I do feel that the 360 controller has the overall advantage in size, shape, and triggers but I feel that the DS3 has the overall advantage in buttons, the analog sticks themselves, D-Pad, wireless, batteries, and headsets. It all depends on what you care the most about and what's the most important to you. I can see why people think the 360 controller is the best, and I can see why people think the DS3 is the best. But to call either one of them "PERFECT" is a lie.
