It's certainly different, but it doesn't look that bad. Enemy AI seemed kinda lackluster, but if they pull off what they're going for I'll be excited. It kinda reminds me of Jade Empire where it was a mix of a ninja gaiden type game and a RPG. Hopefully the action elements of DA2 won't feel like the worst action game ever like JE did.

Why is everyone saying that you can't pause? The guy in the video didn't but he still had all of the move icons refreshing and stuff. There's a guy on Giant Bomb who played the same way during their coverage of part one. I thought it was odd, but that's how some people like to play the game. The only thing the video showed me is that unpaused sword combat will be way more fluid and action game like. Hopefully it fixes the issue where an enemy raises his sword at you, you run 50ft away before they swing yet you still take damage from attack which came nowhere near hitting you. I always hated that all the way back since KOTOR. They call combat real time but it feels like it's turn based and each combat turn starts on the first frame of animation for an attack, so no matter whether you dodge the attack or not, your position for calculating damage and stuff was already locked in before any damage happens.

To be fair, I think they said that the PC version will control in the same way that Dragon Age did. Of course, we'd have to see it in motion to see how different they really are.

Another example of how consoles ruin gaming in general. The console crowd just like to mash buttons without any thinking involved.

loadedboon

yup memorizing and mastering combos in games is jsut button mashing no thinking involved, or would you rather have a move macro'd to your WoW keyboard and have it be real easy. Try playing Street fighter 4 online and we'll see if no thinking is involved. noob.

guys it seems it more like an action RPG, which is fine for me, we all love diablo, so why are we upset about this then. People need to stop being butthurt. "OMG CASUALIZATIONZZZ!!!" when Diablo 1 and 2 were one of the most simplistic games out there. Game was not complex, it was easy to understand, the combat was simple but awesome, and the story was sweet, and yet people are angry over this. Maybe get off your training wheels and play a game that moves faster than 2 miles per hour. you know what go, play some quake live, that will man you up a bit.AiurProtoss
What the **** does Diablo got to do with it? Game looks more like Dynasty Warriors than Diablo. And it's different, Dragon Age is supposed to be the spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate. What the **** is this?

I was hoping Bioware would improve the combat system, making it harder and more strategic than the first, bringing lots of explorable areas like Baldur's Gate and a deeper dialog system. Too bad they went "Mass Effect" on Dragon Age. I'll say no to this game and I'll say no to the path Bioware is threading.

Can't believe people are comparing prime BioWare to CD Projekt, when the Witcher 1 & 2 are ALSO action-oriented games. Dragon Age 2 will mop the floor with the Witcher 2.

Call me when CD Projekt can make characters as awesome as prime BioWare can, then we'll talk. >_>

Also, I remember when some people were bashing Dragon Age 1 for having Marilyn Manson songs in the trailers, saying that the game will suck

To me, this is nothing more than another MARKETING trick.

I doubt I will ever get bored of bashing Bioware or anything made by Bioware.

This, is what they call a part of the series that is supposed to be a spiritual sequel to Baldur's Gate. I disliked the first game already, but by the looks of it they seem to have made the combat even worse than the original's. Thankfully they stated that this is gameplay for the consoles, and they have like half a dozen months to finish off the combat. But really, by the way things are going we will have this lackluster combat, along with what looks very much like lackluster roleplaying (not only the conversation system, but also the fact that it is made by bioware after all and their overly deep roleplaying options that not only let you be good, but also evil)

I expect the reviewers to eat this up, giving it 8-9s while if I actually play this game I might have an experience in the 2-3s. Last game I enjoyed by bioware was NWN and that was because of user made levels and not the official.

thanks for the good laugh Bioware is just an average developer these days with average games.

Ever since I played The Witcher, Bioware has been on my low tier, on my developer tier list.

I don't care what a mostly consoles orientated site thinks because they wouldn't know the difference between an average RPG (Bioware since they went multiplat) or an actually good RPG (The Witcher)

I don't care about those either and it seems the majority of the pc gamers agree The Witcher series is alot better then what Bioware has put out in the last decade.

I have my own opinion about what is good or not and you can keep firing all those scores you want they won't make a difference.

The Witcher is rather overrated. There loads of better developers than CD Projekt and better games; BioWare has the highest praise of a RPG developer to date. Their games are ANYTHING but average. But you can pretend that The Witcher which only caters to its small cult of PC gamers is the best RPG since Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment and that BioWare is a sellout for making their games available on consoles also, while I will play the masterpieces which only BioWare can make. I have never seen a RPG more overrated by its fans than the Witcher this gen.

Proof? I think the Witcher has the most vocal fans, that's for sure.

And how come only PC gamers count? They could have played both new BioWare RPGs on consoles AND the Witcher on PC, so your argument is not valid.

I tend to agree with you there. It's sad when predictions like "they don't care about deep RPGs anymore, they just turn everything into console-focused action-rpgs" keep being confirmed by their announcements.

Although I disagree with you about them not being fun. Mass Effect 2, for example, was quite an enjoyable experience once you got over the fact that it wasn't exactly Ultima (or even Mass Effect 1, for that matter). Even Jade Empire was fun, imo. Having said that, I'll be thrilled if I never have to play through Dragon Age Origins again - I should never have even bothered to struggle through the wall of pure blandness that was my first playthrough.

Oh, and I love the responses on RPG Codex (as usual) to this trailer:
"You seem to have accidentally posted a Fable 3 trailer."
"
At least now it's absolutely clear that there's no point in complaining about lack of any cRPG elements and such, it's an entirely different genre."
"
This video made Dynasty Warriors look like Ninja Gaiden."
...and perhaps my favourite:
"
Hahahahahahahaha"

Let's assume that they were 'wrong'. That does not invalidate the rest of their opinions, which could have just as well been written by different reviewers.

Planeforger

Mass Effect 2 is without a doubt a good game, unfortunately for me. I cant seem to enjoy anything that involves using cover and regeneration and I dont like the conversation system either. I never played Jade Empire, but I like the fact that it is set in china rather than a generic tolkien esque or sci-fi world. Now I want one inspired by Mesoamerican folklore.

Hehe, you reminded me of that response (the one with the Dynasty Warriors looking like Ninja Gaiden), I love what they said there :). I also love their slogan, "Doesnt scale to your level" which is a current thing plaguing roleplaying games, especially those made by Bioware and Bethesda.

this is a major improvement over the crappy combat from DAO as far as consoles concerned, I don't know about PC.

But again if you want crappy controls and combat for the sake of looking strategic then I don't know what to say, after all gamers want to play and have fun with the gameplay department, that's the most important factor in any game.

now that being said, the combat is good but compared to other action RPGs it needs some works and they need to make lower enemies with smarter AI, that would make the combat more challenging.

from what I've seen so far it looks like dynasty warriors lite, they need to make it even liter in terms of enemy count, 5-6 smart enemies on screen will do better.

Yeah, I mainly liked Jade Empire for the inspired setting - other than that, it was just KOTOR with dull combat.
I'd also love to see a big-budget Mesoamerican RPG sometime - I really wish Guild Wars Utopia hadn't been cancelled. :(

Another example of how consoles ruin gaming in general. The console crowd just like to mash buttons without any thinking involved.

wow this doesint come off as offensive at all. I mean dam I never knew owning only a PC rig would give you a superiority complex.

It's a sad truth I've come to realize about some PC gamers here. :( I do think PC's are technically superior and I would play every game on the PC if I could, but I don't see how games on consoles are 'dumber' or play a lot worse...

DA:O was by far better than any ME game and my favourite Bioware game. Actually, only WRPG I liked more than DA:O would be Oblivion.

Wow that actually looks fun. I trust Bioware and screw the naysayers.

The environment kind of reminds me of the planet Therum in Mass Effect. I guess it is just the barren, red quality that it has. Anyway, I am not fond of the new design for the Darkspawn, but the game is looking good to me. Looking forward to it.

I'm surprised that the version they are showcasing is the PS3 version. It's always been the PC or the Xbox360 version.

I'm not liking the way DA2 is turning out. Forcing you to be a human commander shepard with a sword and making button mashing combat. It goes against the intent of the series.

I hated DA:O. One of the reasons being your character didn't speak, and the combat felt like a dumbed down version of KOTOR. This video makes me a little more excited for the sequel. Character talks! And it looks like they gave the combat an overhaul, kind of like they did with ME 2.

Looks like they made the combat less boring.
