AMD could power yet another gaming device – chief financial officer

An accelerated processing unit from Advanced Micro Devices could power yet another gaming device, chief financial officer of the company implied this week. The high-ranking executive did not provide any details, but given the revenue opportunities the company outlined with the deal several weeks ago, we are talking about a high-volume device.

“I will say that one [design win] is x86 and [another] is ARM, and at least one will [be] beyond gaming, right,” said Devinder Kumar, chief financial officer of AMD, at the Raymond James Financial technology conference. “But that is about as much as you going to get out me today. From the standpoint [of being] fair to [customers], it is their product, and they launch it. They are going to announce it and then […] you will find out that it is AMD’s APU that is being used in those products.”

-------------------------------------------------------

  • A brand new AMD CPU architecture?

  • GCN 2.0 GPU architecture?

  • FULL HSA SUPPORT?

  • 3D Stacked HBM-RAM?

  • 14/16nm FinFET node?

Welcome to the Next Generation.

Nintendo won't announce a new console yet, they have the Wii U stacked through to the end of 2016, and announcing a newer one right now will kill any sales potential that's left in it. Unless it's a brand new product category like the DS was at its time, they're not announcing a new system just yet.

Google also just released that brand new Android microconsole, so I highly doubt it's them.

... Apple?

google or amazon could be the ones entering the market, and they have the resources to do so.

Atm, the best IGP enabled APU/SoC would be Sony's PS4 (roughtly Radeon HD R9-270), followed by X1 and Kaveri.

With X1's SoC slicon budget, they could have Radeon HD R9-285 level enabled APU/SoC.

Valve, Apple and Google could follow MS's games console adventure.

I'm thinking it might be Samsung. Its one of the few hardware ventures they are not involved in, and since this generation of hardware is set, they can outmuscle all consoles this generation.

Does anyone realize how unappealing the console market is for a new entrant?

There will be no new console maker entering. This is probably AMD talking about a deal it has struck up with PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo (most probably Nintendo, too early for the other two) regarding a follow up console.

It takes 3-4 years for a console to be finalized from its conception, so this console, assuming Nintendo started conception on it last year, won't be out till 2017 at the earliest.

That said, yeah, I think it's Nintendo.

It pretty much singularly has to be Nintendo. Development on the PS4 didn't even begin until 2008, and no one would have dared talk about it publicly at that early stage. On the other hand, the Wii U and/or 3DS's successor is almost certainly far into development given that the Wii U and 3DS are up for refreshes by about 2017.

2016 seems early for an actual launch, but not a public demonstration. E3 demos and the like, like the 3DS had in 2010.

No doubt ARM architecture will remain in Nintendo's future. Could this finally be the death of PowerPC for Nintendo after 3 generations?

As long as they supply enough cooling and power they can clock cpu portion of the APU to and beyond 2.4 ghz. Even at 3.2 ghz if they are using jaguars the TDP will be under 65w.

To be really fair, there are a whole lot of people on System Wars who toss around terms like "architecture" and acronyms like APU who have absolutely zero clue what they're talking about and have no programming or engineering background whatsoever. All they do is read these articles and then regurgitate things to sound like they know what they're talking about, for the most part.

Actually no it wont take that long if its going to based on current and established hardware and software. They could design ,test and release a system within a year or so if they wanted too , what stops them is the generation cycle goals, and costs in R&D.

I hope that one day all gaming will be done on devices similar to PCs.

EDIT: On topic, it'll probably be a gaming tablet. I'm gonna call that. If I'm wrong, whatever. Hope it's Sega though.

Doesn't really matter, it's not like it can be much more powerful than Xbox One and PS4. Too difficult to program properly for PS4/Xbox One, PC version and another console version... Would cost too much for developer studio's

They're talking about multiple devices with varying hardware.

I'd bet they're talking about Steamboxes. Those will come in a variety of shapes and sizes - and we haven't heard anything about them for a while.

In all seriousness though, I agree with Char's statement. Also, the console market is already too similar.

Both the PS4 & the Xbone are pretty much the same thing in terms of user-experience. They both are pretty much barebones PC's. The Wii U at least offers the tablet controller thingy.

@mikhail: True but that doesn't dismiss what I said. It can definitely go both ways.

The problem I've been seeing is that some people who speak badly toward others on a hot topic tend to look at everyone as completely useless in the matter. Always funny when blanket statements get thrown around just because people don't like the conversation at hand.

vs having their own pricing/release structure? I don't think so. People buy these games without question (though imo popularity is dropping). In EAs case it would give the console a huge exclusives like Madden and Fifa.

There will be no new console manufacturer like Sony, Nintendo and MS.

The market is already too crowded even with those 3.

After 25 months on the market

Gamecube - 5,700,000

WiiU - 3,082,000

Gap = 2.62m in Gamecubes favour.
