Who is the real Master Chief?

The next episode in the "Hunt the Truth" podcast series, a teaser campaign for the upcoming shooter Halo 5: Guardians, has now been posted, diving deeper into the mysteries behind the upcoming Xbox One game. Ultimately, the series aims to answer the question: Who is the real Master Chief?

The new episode, "Critical Condition," is the third in the series (listen to the first two here). In it, fictional investigative reporter Ben Giraud (voiced by actor Keegan-Micahel Key) speaks with a retired military officer living now on Castallaneta, a beach resort on one of Saturn's rings.

There are also interviews with other people who knew the Master Chief/John-117, each offering conflicting reports about his upbringing. Here's the synopsis for the episode:

"Conversations with retired military paint very different pictures of John. More questions arise about John’s home planet and his involvement in a violent training incident. The cracks in the official account widen, and Benjamin is drawn in."

Halo 5 launches October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. Recently, producer Josh Holmes recently confirmed that the game will use dedicated servers for all multiplayer, including custom games.

Microsoft's "Hunt the Truth" viral campaign continues with a cryptic, shocking new entry.

Just who is the real Master Chief? That's the question Microsoft's new, Serial-style "Hunt the Truth" podcast series attempts to answer in the lead-up to the release of Halo 5: Guardians this October.

The second chapter in the series was published last night, and dives even deeper into Master Chief's mysterious origins. This episode begins with a startling revelation. We won't spoil it for you.

"An obscure record from the far reaches of the galaxy contradicts everything," reads a line from the episode's description. "Government officials and conspiracy theorists weigh in. Stories of a remarkable young man are once again torn down by conflicting accounts."

Hunt the Truth is narrated by fictional investigative reporter Benjamin Giraud, who is voiced by actor Keegan-Micahel Key. The first episode focused on the strange relationship between Master Chief and newcomer Agent Locke, who is actually a playable character in Halo 5.

I really enjoy lore rich universes like Halo but I the biggest issue is how they handle the expanded universe. An EU should be there for those who wanted to dive deeper into the lore, not as a necessity to understand what's going on in the next game. I watch Halo Follower since they're the go to source for Halo Lore on Youtube and from what I've seen there are certain Halo comics that have to be read to understand what's happening in Halo 5. Unless 343 does a really good recap of the events between Halo 4 and 5 then most people are probably going to wonder what the f*ck is going on.

In short, keep the game lore and the EU material separate.

It's too hard to dismiss the intrigue as simply the typical government cover-up that happens when someone who is a venerated hero becomes dissident. It's the typical John Kerry story complete with Swiftboat Veterans coming along to re-tell the story of someone the establishments deems a threat.

In other words.

Boring.

About 20k people on Halo Reach last time I played, but probably because the game was given out for free with Games with Gold not too long ago.

No way, only VG Spartans play Halos, none others need apply and there's millions of them, something like 10 plus million copies of Halo 4 sold... Yikes, that's a bunch of Spartans right there. :P

I was a bit worried when I found out Brian Reed was the lead writer but he's going to have Microsoft riding his ass and have tons of sub writers, also hes actually dong good work writing Halo, at the very least Halo 5's plot will deliver.

Hope so, they need to hit this one outta the park after what happened to MCC.

Honestly MCC, even though having no MP for months was a bummer, I usually spend more times on campaigns in Halo than the MP itself, except for Reach and ODST fire fights. Could be because I'm abysmal online and couldn't shoot water if I was in a boat, but I spent more time on the campaigns in MCC even now that the MP is somewhat functional. Sucks that I couldn't do co op online though.

As long as the campaign in Halo 5 is stellar (like Halo 3 level stellar because that had the best campaign IMO) and it has some sort of Fire fight or co op mode (not more Spartan Ops because that was pretty meh) I'll be happy.

You speaking mah language friend, same here as I enjoyed immensely playing all four campaigns back to back without a hitch To be fair, I didn't hook up the X1 and play MCC until Christmas week but was very happy no probs and it was glorious, especially playing the remade from the ground up Halo 2 and oh yeah, agree, Halo 3 is the best Halo since CE.

Definitely intriguing... Sounds like it's going to be an interesting campaign. Which is awesome!

So, I just wanted to see if somehow he already knows the story plot to which this quote is referring to? Would seem pretty dumb if there's nothing new going on when MS/343 seem to be early on hinting and hitting hard that there's going to be a major twist in the MC/Halo story.

That's confusing. I seem to remember a journal coming with the collectors edition of Halo 3 that talked a lot about origin stuff already, and there's been a fair amount of literature about the program, too.

Indeed, confusing and intriguing all at the same time. Couldn't tell you right or wrong but according to all these teasers, something big is up we apparently never knew before and if not, you want to talk about false advertising, this would be it. :P

The entire Halo story is amazing. I put it right up their with Star Wars (minus the 3 prequels bullshit). This next entry already has everyone talking based on a few commercials. The mystery surrounding it is what is intriguing. The story has the makings to be rich and rewarding.

I still want to know more about Locke and his origins. In Halo: Nightfall he was not a Spartan and just a agent for ONI. Now all of a sudden he is a Spartan hunting "The Spartan". Did they turn him into a Spartan as an adult? I thought only children could withstand the punishment of being genetically modified into one. Full grown adults always died when attempting this.

What will The Arbiter do? Lock approaches him to aide in hunting the Master Chief. Who will turn on who? Do we get to craft the story unlike any other game in history?

I cannot wait. BUT before October gets here too quick, let me enjoy some warm weather.

So it is perfectly normal for Locke to become a Spartan at his age then? Ok, that makes more sense. Time to open more books and comics!

You might be into JRPGs. If you are then Halo is the furthest thing from your interests. That's okay if your into that though.

Sure, most of the Spartan IV including Sarah Palmer are Spartan IV but I'm not sure if Locke will be a new type of Spartan, or a Spartan IV with ONI tech, I hope he is though since it'll help him stand out. Big rumor is that ONI and the UNSC will be going at it soon so I can see them doing things under the table.

Sounds kind of dumb, luckily the multiplayer for this series has mostly treated me right, and Halo 5's beta was mostly fun, if nowhere near as good as Halo 2's excellence.

TBH, I had a bit of a tough time with the H5 beta since I really need some time playing the SP part of game getting used to the controls before jumping into MP or I suck more than usual. hehe.

Likely why I've only played Titanfall a couple times, I hate being the noob. :P

It would be a real shame if 343 messed with established canon. Eric Nylunds work is superb and should remain intact. Dont understand why they would need to do this to tell their story.

Wasn't Fall of Reach already retconned by you know actual Halo Reach?

At the least they retconned the blind jump in Halo 1, when they made Cortana the prize peace that needed to make it to the pillar of autumn.

Halo is for kids. Turd 10 with their 'new' engine that brings nothing to the table and 343i talking about story when Halo's story is 'enter a room, throw 3 nades and move to the next one'. You know nothing's coming from the green camp when they talk about story in a Halo game...

I like Halo, but I'm one of those people that really doesn't care if the Halo games center around Master Chief, let alone digging into his past. I already can't get past how his real name sounds like a Bible verse. I liked the refreshing nature of ODST and Reach, I want more of that.

@jg4xchamp: You arent completely wrong but because the book focuses on MC, the game and the book can both stand on their own. Changing MCs origin itself would make the whole book invalid as thats much of its focus.
