Come on people. Don't let some crafty editing fool you.

LOOK at the background.

CarlosPontinas

I don't know if you were watching the video properly or not, but there IS a background. It might not be one you want to acknowledge, the game also has a draw distance of 10km and according to the developer there's only 5km of stuff in this level. Maybe that's why you're so confused.

I assure you the only confusion here is confusing good production values for bad. I don't care what you say, there are NO backgrounds in this game. What is there is known as a lightdome in the business. It's a sphere with a large map thrown on it and 100% self illumination. The only details in this game are the characters.

You don't need to take my word for it now, but you'll be hearing more and more about this... especially when this game underscores.

Interesting that when you quoted him you left out this pic:

....the one that clearly shows the backgrounds

ownage approved....what kind of bizarre argument is it to say that a game has no background? :?

You don't seem to appreciate what is being said to you. Watch the video, only this time ignore the characters.

Okay...the backgrounds are blurred to portray the mist of the mountains and the midday heat haze...

And here are some backgrounds not set in high mountains with very clear backgrounds:

Need to see more recent footage. The old footage had a very big problem of the foreground and main character looking too seperarte from the backgroundd and the enimies. The contact was way off and worse then watching a poor martial arts movie. If people dont think casuals have an effect on games that are made for 360 and ps3. Listen to how devs of these next gen games, talk about accessabilty. This in gaming term = noobifiy. Something that will get a whole lot worse with a certain consoles main function to bring in non gamers.

I showed you a background, even if it's from an earlier development stage. Clearly not every stage in this game is going to have as much depth of field as a heat-hazed mountain top. You have yet to admit that you were wrong. This game does have an environment, and in the face of overwhelming proof, you still deny it or try to change the subject.

I'm gonna side with Carlos here. If you look closely you see what he speaks of. That being said, the game is still nice on the eyes, and if it plays well, it will be one of the reasons for me to pick up a ps3.

I acknowledge that there is heavy use of depth of field and heat haze effects in the mountaintop scene. I do not acknowledge what he ORIGINALLY stated, which was the exact quote: "there is no environment in this game."

No you misquoted him, when he said that it didn't have backgrounds he clearly means quality. I think even a blind man could see that the game has backgrounds but the quality of those backgrounds are well... BTW environment is completely different than backgrounds.

Dude why do you even bother with the little rodent? All he does is bash anything PS3 so there's nothing to talk about with him. He's just nitpicking. Apart from Motorstorm, I'm not sure how many games don't have "flat" ground anyways. They look good if you don't look at the ground from that angle anyways.

I think he just expressed his dislike of the environmental detail by saying there was none. There's clearly environments, half-decent ones at that(the one screenie reminded me of SotC), but I'm not a fan of the depth of field or the blocky mountainsides. But I'm no graphic whore, if that game plays great, those graphics are more than enough to keep me happy.

No, he wasn't talking about quality. He said that because the blur effect was used on the mountaintop, that there was in fact no environment in this game--that in fact, NT had used the blur effect to hide the fact that there was no environment. My point was that the mountaintop stage is blurred, but not all stages are, and there are clearly environmental backgrounds in this game. Look at the quote--if he meant something else, he should not have stated it the way he did. And to dodge the topic, he later altered his remarks to criticize the quality of the environments, rather than sticking with his original statement which was that blur effects were used to hide the fact that there were no environments in the game.

It's a shame because the girl looks quite nice. Perhaps it's just me but doesn't anyone else notice there is no environment in this game? The background is blurred. You know what it looks like? An early version of Tomb Raider with a slightly more detailed character.

I don't know. If this is the best the PS3 can come up with I'm really beginning to believe that console is doomed.

CarlosPontinas
Quoted for those who missed his original statement. Note that there is no mention of the environment's quality, only that it does not exist due to blur.

Also, some lame flamebait remarks about how it looks like the original Tomb Raider and that PS3 is doomed

Rodent?

Where are your manners? Is this how you greet someone you don't know? I don't think I've ever spoken to you before.

FYI my comments are pertinent to this discussion and they're accurate. If you don't like them, don't read them.

I'm telling the discerning reader that most software houses emphasize the development of engaing environments and that although there's some nice character work here, it is let down by the lazy backgrounds.

So I'm a "rodent" for saying this now?

You people are taking this as a personal attack, I assure you it is not by either one of us. We both have pointed out that the game looks good when you focus on the characters, however, the environment/background suffers much in the same way that they did in Fightnight. I like consistancy in my games, and I'm paying enough money for me to have it. Developers are treating you like you are fools by using tricks to cut corners, if you fall for it hey it's your $60 I just expect more if you want me to pay more for software and hardware. Of course, that may change if the gameplay is exceptional and there is nothing pointing to that at this point.

What the heck is wrong with their hair? It seems they have 4 or 5 huge strands of hair covered in oil. Nice work with the facial animations but God, the players are going to see the hair more often than the face, put some effort into that!

This game is looking awesome. Whoever sais that the graphics are weak are either blind or a fanboy in my opinion. Btw CarlosPontina, stop trying to bash the PS3 in every single post that you create. Microsoft is not paying you to bash the PS3 so there's no point in you doing so. Play your 360 and be happy. Don't worry about the PS3. It'll do just fine.

This game might give me enough reason to actually buy a PS3. The game footage all looks amazing.

no, i'm curious. i want this game to be good. even if turns out its mostly interactive cutscenes, it could still be great, but we all know you are a blind fanboy massAttack2k . Somempeople are gamers some are blind fanboys..

Quoted for those who missed his original statement. Note that there is no mention of the environment's quality, only that it does not exist due to blur.

Also, some lame flamebait remarks about how it looks like the original Tomb Raider and that PS3 is doomed

you shouldnt argue with this guy, he is one of the 360 fanboys who is content on thinking nothing can be great looking on the ps3..or nothing can be better looking then a 360 game until the 360 beats the game first. (example, nothing will be gears until something like mass effect beats it...)

The game looks great so far...although, they should do some work on the hair People who are complaining about the background should sitdown and appreciate different forms of creativity from different artists...who knows, maybe it will look great while you're playing. But the hair....the hair really needs work.

I agree that I shouldn't have bothered with him, but I just get sucked into these silly little arguments.

Not very limited...but abit like god of war, apparently. You will have control..but in most cinematics you will be tol what to press to actually achieve the goal (reaching that area etc etc)...this definetly adds to the gameplay and imo, for the better.
GoldenCry
I'm torn on "context-sensitive" sequences, in general. It allows for interesting cinematic moments but it takes you "out" of the game at the same time. It's kind of a cop-out...a cheap way to make a moment memorable. At the same time, though, it makes for some memorable moments, and that's generally a good thing. I'd rather have good AI and clever design within the typical gameplay framework (a la Zelda...Ninja Gaiden) than gimmicky controls, but I can't complain about the gorgeous art.

Looks awesome! Simply amazing. I love the details and the art style. The only thing I could complain about is the main character's hair. It looks kinda blocky, when it moves, hope they make it more smoother in the end.
