I'm not upgrading, I'm not paying $500 for that. I'm fine with my 80Gb Phat. The upside is that the other PS3 models will go down in value.

Indeed. But you know if Sony cuts their price at this point everyone else will as well. Works out for everyone.

What's the point of upgrading the hdd when consumers already have the option to install their own hdd? I'm sure there's some 1tb ps3's out there. Well at least Sony gives you the option unlike some other company I know.

Hmm. I

was actually trying to upgrade, I even sold (or tried to sell) my PS3 for $210 on ebay, but the guy was a non-paying bidder!!!! So I still have it.

Maybe I can now try to sell again and upgrade to this one, I've seen alot of $100 gift card deals lately on PS3's so I was thinking it would be a good time to try and trade in for as little cost difference as possible - to get a new one under warranty.

My 80gb fat is still going strong, but if it ever croaks, I'll probably invest in one.

Can anyone explain why anyone would purchase this one over the new slims? I mean you may get a little bit more memory, but you pay $100+ more

This is the newest model of the slim. It will retail for the same price as the current 320GB PS3.

I would assume it's using a 32nm fabrication process - which means lower production cost - so I foresee some sort of price cut in the medium term.

Basic rule of thumb: divide the price in yen by 100 and you'll have the approx MSRP in USD or Euro.

I don't think many will be upgrading, maybe if their current PS3 dies then why not but not now, always better to have a smaller lighter PS3 though.

I really want that Tales of Xillia PS3. I'll just have to print out a picture and put it on my ceiling so I can look at it before I go to bed.

It's lighter? I might get one if my current machine breaks down (which it has yet to do).

The current slim doesn't use more than 100 watts anyways, they are just making the power supply smaller, so, in effect, that is probably what makes the machine lighter.

No reason to buy it... Already have a slim... My 60GB PS3 is sitting in a box waiting for a new home. Stopped using it right when they took Other OS out (still has the option).

If they were to add a faster BR drive, 7200 RPM HDD and cut down the CPU/GPU power consumption... I would buy it.

The X360 camp wants the PS3 to drop price first and the PS3 camp wants the X360 to drop price first. 2nd console to drop price always benefits long term, especially the cheaper one (X360)

It's actually less than that when it's brought to the US. When I was in Japan a game was selling for 6000 yen and $50 in the US and this is the same kind of translation that lead everyone to say the 3ds would be $300+. Just trying to emphasize that it is less than that still.

In EU we pay 399 us dollars for a slim ps3.

USA is pampered like a 12 year old schoolgirl.

299 us dollar for a ps3.

Biggest loss and smallest profit from launch till now in the US region.

The HDD in ALL models (phat or slim) is simply a 2.5 SATA HDD ( in other word: the HDD that is used in almost every god damned laptop in the world XD) So yeah, you can get them for dirt cheap like so:

2.5 SATA HDD with 250GB for $49.99. (which honestly, 250GB is more than enough for a PS3 imo)

And this is just from a very quick search. If you try you could actually find them a bit cheaper.

As for how you do the backup and restore part, this video explains it quite well ( even how to remove the HDD from your PS3 in fact)

Wow that is cheap!! I should get this for my B-day! And last question, does it void the warranty? (not able to watch video at the moment)

Nope, it does not void the warranty in any way possible :) they were designed with a possible change of HDD from the start. When you do buy it, just follow the steps from the video. It takes a bit of your time, but it's worth it :P

Alright sweet! Thanks man! I'll bookmark that video. I bought mine used online actually and its a Phat 2usb 80 GB PS3.

Yeah I learned that with Microsoft, if you want your console to be even remotely comparable with the other console without having to pay an insane premium, you have to take things out of their casing. I had to crack open the casing of an old 20Gb 360 HDD just so that I could use it with my 360S, and it was only just a regular 2.5 SATA HDD. I also had to crack open the casing of the A/V cable that came with the system because good old Monopolysoft had designed it so that a little tab on the cable would block the HDMI port whenever it was inserted into the system. So if people wanted to set the AV cable to output sound while the HDMI cable output the image, they would have to buy an overpriced audio adapter cable. :|
