Well, with Sigma just around the corner, I gave in and bought a PS3. I was actualy happy to throw away a weeks salary on this new expensive toy as NG Sigma is worth that price alone. But as a current 360 and Wii owner, I am somewhat dissapointed by some of the shortfalls I came to discover on the PS3. Ill start with the biggest dissapointments:

1. The system updates, compared to the other two consoles, it is a long process since you are required to download it first then install it, connect the controller, and jump through some other hoops.

2. The above issue also carries over to the downloadable demos. The downloads are about on par with the 360, but having to install the demo you just downloaded just adds to this dissapointing issue.

3. Unappealing Sony Store! The OS looks great (after getting used to it), but the store is a pain to browse through, no where near as appealing and user friendly as the the other two consoles.

4. Internet browser problems. I am unsure if it is just me, but while browsing I often get a message where the system is out of memory, or the page never seems to stop loading.

5. No surround through analog cables. Fom what I understand the only way to get surround sound is through the optical or HDMI cables. (correct me if Iam wrong)

6. Choppy performance when upscaling. While playing San Andreas, I noticed poor frame rates when using the upscaling and smoothing functions to do the 1080p resolution. (should this be happening with old games on such "stellar" hardware?)

7. The controller sometimes loses connectivity and it continues to carry out the last function. This is only a minor issue at the moment since it only lasts a few seconds (forcing me to run off the Athens rooftop platforms in GOW, and crash a car into the Binco store in GTA). But I am seriously contemplating getting a wired controller since this type of thing will mean certain demise with the unfogiving AI found in NG.

Well that is about it, I have had the system for almost a week now and I am trying to finish Resistance as it is the only PS3 game I have. These are just the things I wanted to share, and please understand that I am not trying to bash the PS3 in any way, and I can see real potental "IF" developers put some effort into games like Bethesda did, and not just have some company port a game over.

p.s. the graphics on the demos and PS3 games I have played are on par with the 360 and it is up to the individual's tv and settings to make a good comparison, but anyone claiming that Resistance has better graphics than Gears needs to be slapped with a wet fish untill they realize the garbage they spout

Those complaints aren't very significant--they can be easily fixed with a new firmware upgrade.

About #6.

Do you live in Europe or the US? If you live in EU, then the problem probably is because its software emulating the games and I dont think that SA has perfect BC atm.

If you live in the US, no idea. SA runs perfectly fine on my PS3 when upscaling.

The store is a bit blain to navigate yea.

I've never had the controller do that to me, ever.

Upscaling can reveal bad programming in old games sometimes.

I was over at a friend's house, and we decided to download the Def Jam: Icon demo, and I only remember it installing, and it took about 5 or 10 minutes, so... I dunno.

The only problem I've encountered is #7, but it only happens rarely and only with PS2 games. San Andreas runs perfectly fine on the US PS3s, so if you are in the UK, compatability issues are different. I agree with your first two points: It is rather annoying when you have to wait fifteen minutes to download a firmware update/ demo and then wait five more minutes to install it .

1. Agreed, also, you can't go on the PSN store without updating first.

2. Agreed.

3. Yep, ugly.

4. Sometimes, no big deal.

5. Eh... ok.

Agreed on everything, especially the RFoM vs Gears graphics comment. RFoM is the only PS3 game I own too.

Another thing I noticed immediately was the lack of custom soundtracks. Also, the lack of mics being used online and the complete lack of voice support for MKII

Just for clarification...

I do live in the U.S. and have a new 60gb version of the PS3. I have not played anything online yet, but for reference my id is: randosnuf. I have not signed up for the paid functionality of the store, since I do not feel it is worth while, neither this or the VC can hold a candle to Live marketplace.

I am enjoying the good game that the PS3 has now, as well as some older great PS2 games, but these along with other consoles and their great games, will all cease to exist once I have Sigma in hand.

1. never really had a problem with this, but I don't have any comparison.

2. same as 1

3. Yea, the store is a pain in the butt, especially without a mouse.

4. I have had these exact problems browsing so I generally avoid using my ps3 for surfing.

5. I haven't noticed this, but I just assumed it worked. Maybe I should go home and check...

6. Not an issue for me.

7. Yup, this has happened to me a number of times. As a general rule however it has never been a cause for distress. Though I imagine in a game where a couple of seconds can be the difference between life and death it would be really frustrating.

Good list, if people that change these things pay attention maybe some frustrations will be fixed.

FYI for those mentioning the absence of customizable soundtracks. Granted they are missing but it isn't the ps3's fault. It supports such designs in games, but if developers don't put them in their games then they won't be on the system.

Upscaling can reveal bad programming in old games sometimes.

caseypayne69

Um... it shouldn't, since upscaling is technically (or should be) a separate process which involves the fully rendered scene instead of rendering the scene with other techniques. That's why some TVs are capable of up or downscaling stuff.

As for the complaints, the most glaring one would be the controller thing. Happened to me once or twice with Motorstorm (which was not nice at all). While it does happen from time to time with the 360 too, at least MS had the brain to autopause the game when a controller disconnection is detected.

FYI for those mentioning the absence of customizable soundtracks. Granted they are missing but it isn't the ps3's fault. It supports such designs in games, but if developers don't put them in their games then they won't be on the system.

Insane00

Actually, yeah it is. Any monkey can make a console where devs can implement custom soundtrack themselves... you just need a special folder for music and allow games to access it. The 360 has a rather elegant implementation, where you can manage custom soundtracks at the system level if you wish, which will mute the music track of the game. Devs can from there onwards do special stuff if they wish (like Def Jam and the rythm, or GTA used to do on the xbox, where you could use the radio to play custom soundtracks).

It's a failing of the PS3 console.

Agreed 100%.

The PS3 having no custom soundtracks right now iscompletely Sony's fault. Saying otherwise proves you have no clue about this topic.

I don't mind the custom soundtrack issue, since I can just listen to music in other ways, but the whole "just wait.." idea should only apply to games coming out, and not be an excuse for sloppy development.

The system updates are a hassle but they're worth it and they do them often. Each time it gets a little better(or alot with the upscalling features and media connect). Shows they're working hard on making it better.

I have no problems with the browser myself though i don't use it that much. I've never gotten that error message. Also not a problem with the controller either though I've heard it before. I'd go back to the store and exchange the controller. Can't hurt and it might solve it. If you really want to go wired just get a usb extension cable and use that.

The surround, and i'm assuming you mean 5.1, can't be done through analog cables on any machine. What I find annoying about it is that you can't have sound over the tv through hdmi and optical to the receiver at the same time. You have to switch to select the output. I have to turn on my reciever whenever I want to play or switch it to hdmi output to have sound on the tv..

Why is everyone making fun of hte PS3 fans waiting for games? Isn't that what all console owners are doing right now, to some extent? Wii owners have even fewer decent games to play, and the xbox has a decent library, but not enough to make the fans not start waiting for lost odyssey, blue dragon, hlo 3 etc, etc...

Well, cows tend to rely much more heavily on the "just wait" argument. While everyone is waiting for more stuff, it seems the PS3 is the only one that's harder to make an argument for a "right now" purchase that can't be countered with a "get a 360", at least in the games front.

Never had the controller problem you speak of since i got the console (march 23rd). Complaining about updating etc or you install the demos or the look of psn are pretty minor things but id look up about that controller thing as i never had it i doubt its a random bug and could be your controller?

I've heard some of those complaints before, mainly the ones with demos, system updates an dthe PS store. Poor framerates on upscaled games also applies to some 360 games.

It does sound stupid, having to reconnect the controller for an update? having to install demos? barely any demoes to choose from?

I stil look forward to buying one though if only because I want a console that doesn't break every couple of weeks. My 360 has broke 3 times so far and I haven't even had it a year yet :( I'm thinking about selling it soon.

All those problems are either impatient due to your personal preferences, or minuet problems that Sony stated they are working on. Anyways, I hope you like the PS3 and enjoy Ninja Gaiden Sigma. I highly suggest going to the Official PS3 forums to get tips on how to fully optimize your PS3 hardware.

p.s. the graphics on the demos and PS3 games I have played are on par with the 360 and it is up to the individual's tv and settings to make a good comparison, but anyone claiming that Resistance has better graphics than Gears needs to be slapped with a wet fish untill they realize the garbage they spout

Prepare to get flamed by the cows.....

No need to flame him. All what he states is true. A good post about what he doesn't like about the PS3.

I never really had any of those problems. The only problem I've had is incessant freezing on my old playstation 2 games.

Heil68

sure it has

......... :|

You don't even know me. Who are you to say what has and hasn't happened.

It's quite insulting to be honest. We have a console that is known to be the most unreliable console ont he market/ever made. A console where it's not uncommon for people to have had 3 or 4 break with the "3 red light" error. A console that has had a week full of news about the hardware problems, and you just need to look at any game forum, even xbox related ones to see that it quite obviously is a complete joke.

So I spend almost £300 on the console alone. I buy another 30 games for it. I buy multiple points cards...I have no idea how much I've spent in total but it's gotta be a hell of alot. Then here you are....some lemming on some forum that claims I'm lying just because you want to defend your console.

Meh whatever. Everyone knows how bad the 360 is, and no doubt yours will break soon if it hasn't already. Not believing me doesn't make a difference to the hardware.

Well aside from the internet browser problems...and I'm not sure about the controller losing connectivity, the rest are pretty common complaints about the PS3.

I'll respond to your dissappointments:

1. The system updates, compared to the other two consoles, it is a long process since you are required to download it first then install it, connect the controller, and jump through some other hoops.

Very true. I was annoyed at this when I first connected. If you're using Wifi it takes even longer. It's a one time pain though. As is, I do my updates at night or when I run out to the store or something.

2. The above issue also carries over to the downloadable demos. The downloads are about on par with the 360, but having to install the demo you just downloaded just adds to this dissapointing issue.

Is this really such a big deal? It takes 5 minutes tops. And this is probably something they'll fix with a future firmware. Remember, the 360 had a whole year on PS3. XBL wasn't flawless from inception. Patience young grasshopper.

3. Unappealing Sony Store! The OS looks great (after getting used to it), but the store is a pain to browse through, no where near as appealing and user friendly as the the other two consoles.

You get what you pay for. If you want bells and whistles, MS is happy to take 60 bucks a year from you. Me, I go online to play games online with other people. I get to do that for free with PS3. The PS store is generic but Home is coming as are other updates to the store.

4. Internet browser problems. I am unsure if it is just me, but while browsing I often get a message where the system is out of memory, or the page never seems to stop loading.

Yeah, I get that too. Honestly, I don't use my PS3 for browsing. I can't get the words to show up right (they're either too small or too big) and I don't own a usb keyboard.

5. No surround through analog cables. Fom what I understand the only way to get surround sound is through the optical or HDMI cables. (correct me if Iam wrong).

Not sure on this.

6. Choppy performance when upscaling. While playing San Andreas, I noticed poor frame rates when using the upscaling and smoothing functions to do the 1080p resolution. (should this be happening with old games on such "stellar" hardware?)

Ummm....dunno. I honestly don't play PS2 games on my PS3 because I'd rather play them with rumble. I did hear GOW looks amazing when upscaled so maybe this is a game by game problem and not something indicative of the entire PS2 library on a PS3.

I get this too. You have to keep the controller within sight of the PS3. I have my PS3 on my computer desk and whenever I put the controller anywhere out of sight of the PS3 it loses connectivity (not like you wouldn't expect this). I pulled my PS3 out from behind my TV a bit and the problem is gone. Believe me, having this is a very small compared to having to buy rechargeable batteries. None of your problems where lack of games related so I can tell your a real PS3 owner. Just bare with the small problems now and remain patient. We're in for a very exciting E3 and holiday season. As for PSstore, I'll deal with it's blandness ANYDAY before I'm forced to pay a monthly fee to play online. Feel free to add me to your buddy list for a quick whopping in RFOM ;).

I'm a "sony fanboy" and I'm not eating him alive. I can tell he owns a PS3. The only time people get "eaten alive" is when they come on complaining about a lack of games when they just bought the system. Those are the people that are flamers. New owners have more games to play now than we ever had and it's only getting better.

FYI for those mentioning the absence of customizable soundtracks. Granted they are missing but it isn't the ps3's fault. It supports such designs in games, but if developers don't put them in their games then they won't be on the system.

LosDaddie

Is this something Sony could fix in a firmware update?

nope, that's an xbox thing. Lemmings are the ones can't handle critisim and won't belive you till you send them an encrypted message through live. Everyone knows the ps3 isn't perfect yet but the point is they're working on it with the updates.

Yeah, the store is a bit plain compared to XBL. But overall, nearly everything you described were nitpicks... Not really "disappointments" IMO

BTW, you seemed to have forgotten about the controller having no rumble :)
