Is this something Sony could fix in a firmware update?

Actually custom soundtrack is already in the PS3. It's up to developers to us it. Here's the quote and link from the guys who said it.

"Q. Linking to games, the 360 has a feature to allow music in the HDD and network to be played back as game BGM.

I had those complaints. I just had to realize the PS3 is not the Xbox 360...and the Xbox 360 is not the PS3.

That is how you will find your contentment. You'll only frustrate yourself by looking at what the 360 does and what Live does vs. what PS3 doesn't do yet.

Regardless of either, rumble is an integral part in gaming these days. Well Microsoft and Nintendo seem to think so... 8)

5. No surround through analog cables. Fom what I understand the only way to get surround sound is through the optical or HDMI cables. (correct me if Iam wrong)

No console has ever existed that has offered surround sound (5.1)through analog cables.

The ONLY way to get surround on video game consoles is through toslink or HDMI.

You can not get surround sound through the standard red and whitestereo cables that you're thinking of (they're called stereo cables because they only do stereo.)

You could have bought an old xbox to get Ninja Gaiden black... and sell it after...

I get this too. You have to keep the controller within sight of the PS3. I have my PS3 on my computer desk and whenever I put the controller anywhere out of sight of the PS3 it loses connectivity (not like you wouldn't expect this).

Actually, it's something I wouldn't expect to do. Wireless information is NOT a line-of-sight communication system, like infrared is. Most wireless peripherals should work through at least a wall. The problem is that the signal is too weak in the PS3, I guess. Might be to save battery life.

It sounds like you're nitpicking with the downloads. The Playstation Store is lacking though. The games are very good and more are coming out all the time. Losing connectivity with the controller only happens on a couple games and it's far and few in between. At least you can recharge them without taking batteries out.

Do you want to hear about my problems with the 360?!

First it's very unreliable; freezes, 3 red lights, my HDD failed too. Got it raplaced for free and Ebayed it.

second- have to pay to play online. At least PS3's online is free and it works very well.

3rd- PS3 has way better games coming out for it than 360 does. MGS 4, KZ2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Lair, Uncharted Drakes Fortune.

The PS3 looks great and performs great on a HDMI TV and its online works great. I think people expect it to look all colorful like 360 dashboard is the real problem.

Just for clarification...

I do live in the U.S. and have a new 60gb version of the PS3. I have not played anything online yet, but for reference my id is: randosnuf. I have not signed up for the paid functionality of the store, since I do not feel it is worth while, neither this or the VC can hold a candle to Live marketplace.

I am enjoying the good game that the PS3 has now, as well as some older great PS2 games, but these along with other consoles and their great games, will all cease to exist once I have Sigma in hand.

Give the PS3 a chance! The online is smoothe and runs great, you can set up friends all the way to the right on the XMB, chat, headset games, and get notified every time a friend comes online and goes offline. Also a lot of great games headed its way. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is sweet and a lot more. PS3 wont freeze, break down, or let you down when it comes to games. I recommend having extra controllers recharging off to the side, so when the one you're playing with runs down you're set.

How the hell is recharging the batteries without taking them out a good thing?? So its better for me to stop my game session just so I can recharge my batteries. No thank you. Its incredibly annoying. The X360 has an advantage with its controllers since you can purchase rechargeable batteries for $3 a pair and then swap them whenever you run out of juice.

For a superior experience, the price is very little. $30 off ebay = less than $3 a month. Do you see me crying about the lack of headset included with the PS3 or HD cables that are missing???

Way better games?? KZ2......... well the first one sucked..... I guess the second one might be decent. NG sigma is a high res port of a remake of an original xbox game. Hardly impressive. Lair isn't out and based off gameplay it may be AA. Uncharted............. don't know much about this game....... will need to wait until its released since Motorstorm and F1 were letdowns, I'd rather wait before passing judgements.

Those complaints aren't very significant--they can be easily fixed with a new firmware upgrade.TrueReligion_

Yeah, i agree, generally sony is constantly working to fix such issues, and then just releases a firmware update every few weeks. Also, yes they could use smoothing with ps2 games, but you see the games themselves, were never meant for high definition play as, high definition is better resolution and exposes a lot of the flaws and pixels that make up the games, which as i said, were not mastered for high definition so you will see all this. Really, the way, at least right now to enjoy ps2 and ps1 games, is turn off the upscaling, and you will get the games in 480p, which is super video, just a cut above normal and you won't get flaws and pixelation.

I am saying it was possible for me to buy it but instead bought a 360 bundle with PGR and another controller, and then seperately bought condemned and dead rising seperately. IMO I should have waited to make such a decision as the price was ever dropping, and I should have gotten Oblivion instead of condemned.

I was just saying that even for an ex-cow (an ex-cow for a reason) the PS3 was just a poor decision.

I am saying it was possible for me to buy it but instead bought a 360 bundle with PGR and another controller, and then seperately bought condemned and dead rising seperately. The 360 has a rather elegant implementation, where you can manage custom soundtracks at the system level if you wish, which will mute the music track of the game. Devs can from there onwards do special stuff if they wish (like Def Jam and the rythm, or GTA used to do on the xbox, where you could use the radio to play custom soundtracks).

It's a failing of the PS3 console.

It made sense to me cause as a general rule I can't play whatever music I want on my computer while playing a game, one will override the other so I always thought implementing music saved on the system was part of the code in the games. I don't write code, I'm not an electrical engineer and I never, ever want to work on the numbers side of computers/gaming so excuse the ignorance. If it is possible for Sony to implement a system in their OS that makes it so that every game has customizable soundtracks (and it sounds like it is if the X-Box has it) they need to implement such a system to stay competitive.

actually if you read my rant, you will notice that I own a 360, but I did fail to mention that I have both the original Xbox Ninja Gaiden, and NG Balck. So as you can see, I am a big fan of this game, hence I own a PS3 now. You may state that this is idiotic, but there are plenty of features which do not appear in the previous incarnations. Besides, I know that the next installment is going to be on the DS, so without saying that will be the day I own a DS. (you see where I'm going with all of this?)

er you can play what music you what on your computer while playing a game, to stop it clashing, goto a menu and turn the games music off.

if youre referring to the initial post, I do not believe that they are ridiculous. think about it, if sony fixes even some of the afformetnioned issues, the system would be on much more in my house as compared to the wii or 360
